  • how do we come to know engine is overheated and needs rest?

with many two wheelers not having engine overheat warning lights how can we come to know that engine is getting overheated?
I mean what are the symptoms that tell us that the engine is getting overheated?

When it is overheated, you'll feel the heat between your legs... (guess what does it mean !?)

When the engine is overheated it'll start makiong some strange noise or it'll sound a bit different/unusual. pickup decreases, FE decreases... any rider can easily feel these changes...

No clue as to how to find the overheating time precisely, but my bike sends signals of engine heating quite nicely. When my thighs feel the heat, I know that the engine is really hot. But, when they start burning, its time to pull aside for a break.
[In my 18 months of riding experience, I felt the need to stop only once; when I was riding non stop for 450 kms. I'd to stop for 40 mins around the 300 km mark for the heat to reduce to some extent. But, I was constantly maintaining 90+ speeds too.]

            oh.
so for a scooter i have to watch out if my lower leg is getting heated or not.
            :/
besides what rahul has said that you can feel the engine behaving strangely.

so that tells that " murlidhar! you've got to rest me"

            hmmm.

If the engine is over heated, the first sign is that you will be hearing light tappet noise kinda noise and the pickup drastically drops, you can easily feel that its strained.

ah you mean that tak tak tak tak ...sound ?
i have heard that before in my uncle's flyte when it was new.
we took it for a 50 km ride back then.
maybe the engine got overheated fast cuz it was a new one!

An overheated engine will lose power. So the pickup will reduce on an overheated engine. You will be easily able to feel it when riding the scooter.

Edit: But as long as you are using the machine at below 75% of its peak, it is rarely possible that it will overheat. The scooters may be made for the city but the manufacturers have to test it thoroughly even for extended usage to ensure that it doesn't overheat on long runs. An overheated engine is the biggest candidate for seizure and the company wouldn't want a huge no. of engine replacements under warranty if they want to stay in the business, not least on a scooter which is 20k more expensive than the closest competition.

                          that's a good way of testing : )
nice piece of information . will definitely help me in preventing the engine from getting seized. practically the engine heat doesn't reach to one's body in case of a scooter. this method will certainly help me in keeping things under control.
                          thanks a lot pinaki : )
and of course everyone else who gave me some useful advices.
now i got the answer i was looking for.

now i have to find where the engine head cooling fins are ......
will search for it in the workshop manual : )

yes. maintaining a speed of 60-65 on highways should fine i guess and with few intervals i think it shouldn't get heated up too much but then it's a three valve engine and three valve engines are usually prone to quick overheating.
( googled about it so not sure how far it is correct)
just being careful for my vespa

i still have my papa's kinectic Honda and it still gives me that peppy fun ride with a decent average

Stop riding when it gets noisy.
In my Kiney the engine will loose compression when way too hot, and wont start till its cold again.
