  • Tapet Setting

Since the past 2 days I am facing a minor pickup problem on my P180. I have a loose chain and the bike was serviced in October. I visited the Bajaj chap and he claims that the clutch plates are perfect. He says my tapet setting is loose (on the head of the engine) and that it needs to be adjusted. The bike has also started to knock a bit on pickup, put things normalise when momentum is picked up i.e. after 40kmh.

Is it the tapet or something else? For eg. the loose chain (it sounds a bit too loose), transmission wire which connects the spark plug.

My bike has completed 15000kms and I have genrally used normal unleaded petrol. Does engine have to be decarbonised? Can additives in petrol remove the carbon? If yes, please suggest names.

I am also getting my front fork oil changed. I have a thought of changing the wheel bearings too if needed. Please suggest a way to determine whether the bearings need to be changed.

    Waiting for lots of replies.

    Thanx guys.

    hey,
firstly regarding de-carb,get a compression test done to see if you need a decarb.
please get the chain tightened and lubricated, then ride bike and see if there is still a prob in pickup etc, bec. very often these problems may be chain/sprocket related? Have you ever got your chain cleaned in oil/kerosene ? i guess now is the right time for you to do it. will prolong life of the chain and sprockets.
get front fork oil changed.get the steering races examined. get them polished or replaced if necessary.
    Indicative costs will be-
    Chain cleaning -Rs 150/-
    steering races/cones -Rs 450/-(new)
Fork oil comes to around 150 bucks including new seals plus labour.250-300 bucks in all for front fork job.

      Hey Aprandiv,
What do you mean by steering races? Please specify. And regarding the compression test. How is it supposed to be done? Will the Bajaj guys do it for me or is there a way to do it on ur own. Please specify

Steering races are located below the steering stem head bolt/nut,they are in two sets upper bearing race and lower bearing race.both have 23 ball bearings each.and the races itself which are then removed polished/replaced. any PB/good mech. will do this.

Compression test is done using a compression tester, the PB has it they will do it for you. and they wont charge you a paisa. for this.

Thanx for the info guys. Ia m going toget things sorted out tomorrow. All I wanted to ask is whether using the bike in this condition for 2 days would have done any harm? The service station is 10kms from my place, is there any chance of a breakdown.[V] Please reply.

it's a very normal thing to get done, get it on a warm engine.recommended gap will be in the workshop manual.
