  • Yamaha SZ: Low power problem

    Hi Guys,
I own a Yamaha SZ and have ridden it for 5K KMs but i have a problem, i am not able to push my bike beyond 60 KMPH, when i try it the engine seems to road but there is not end result.
Also when i try to do an incline the bike seems to give up power and on pushing the throttle all i get is roars from engine. I have had the carb checked for any dirt or water but it was clean, i mentioned this issue to yamaha service center also but they could not come up with any solution hence posting it here for any clues on how to get a 150CC like power from my bike. Please assist.

Get the tappet clearances checked. Adding to that, get the air filter checked too.
      How's the mileage?
      Got a $5 head? Get a $5 helmet.

        Check these things first :

        1. Is your air filter dirty , If yes then get it cleaned or else get it changed.
        2. If your carb was tuned at SVC , then chances are they have altered the AFR which is affecting your performance, as lean mixture or AVERAGE TUNING as they say will result in better mileage but overheated engine and poor performance , same will happen with rich mixture also except for heat.
        3. loose or tight tappets also alter the engine performance.. Get hold of a good outside mechanic and get it tuned to correct clearance , Your manual has specification for both inlet and outlet clearances
        4. Lastly change the spark plug , Spark plug will be fouled if you are running too rich .
Carb Tuning made easy (Thanks Sibun !)

Somethings to note to get back that punch and top speed:

            1. Get the carb tuning checked. < It must be anywhere above 4 clock turns out. Mine is 5.5 turns, varies for each bike.>
            2. Spark plug, air filter, oil filter checked / replaced.
            3. Chain and sprocket adjustment.
            4. Recommended Grade of oil : 20w40 (Make sure the level of oil is ample)

This should work, else check on tappet adjustment. If that too doesn't work. It may be the TPS sensors. Warning!! Be careful not to experiment by disconnecting the battery and trying to run bike. It does disable the sensors but also fails all other things like brake light, horn, indicators etc. Thus you will be running blind to others and can result in accident.

Sounds like the clutch is slipping.
Can you ride in 4th gear @40kph, give full throttle and tell me if the RPM's increase or the bike slowly jerks, and tries to go faster?

If the RPM's just climb then your clutch is slipping. Change oil and / or change clutch.

If the engine bogs down and the bike jerks then its not the clutch but something else, More than likely something already described above.

+1 this, but I really doubt a clutch wear at just 5000km! But yes you could try overhaul the clutch.

                  1) Blockage in air filter - Where you keep your bikes papers?
                  2) Choke ON rides
                  3) Clutch - 5K only.. humm.. no harm in getting that checked.
