  • Mileage Problem in Discover 100 ( 40kmpl only)

I am again with a problem. My bike ( Bajaj DIscover 100 , 2011 sept model) is giving mileage between 40-44 kmpl)

Let me tell the history first then i will come to the point.

*The bike used to emit white smoke at higher speeds ( like at above 80-85 when dragged the bike used to emit smoke and when stopping the bike used to go dead and wont respond for 1-2 mins, after that it used to start again by kick / es) that time i went for a piston ring change ( as per experts advise ) but the mech could not find the rings so the piston was replaced with 1 over size piston and had to bore the cylinder wall) the problem solved afterwards .

    P.S : i followed the running in at 40-50 km/h till 500 km.

The bike used to give an average of 52- 55 kmpl then.

*After that the bike mileage dropped to 50 and i approached to svc center again and they told me clutch burnt and the clutch replaced ( but mileage did'nt increased)

    * After that i changed my spark plugs as per svc center's advice and they told us to check the spark plug color after a tuning to see the difference and while doing that one fine day i over tightened the plug and later the thread broke , Again i had to open the engine and had to fix the spark plug thread with welding.

Now for last one month the milege is between 40-45 and sometimes i get wonderful figures like 34-35 too.

Last Sunday i took it to a mech again and checked , washed carb, cleaned air filter , checked chain . But nothing improved.

( now again i can see little white smoke at higher speed drags on semi synth oil , in synthetic oil [ Agip 10w40 i did not noticed any white smoke even at 85-90s] and at idle sometimes a metal slap sound can be heard [ which may also be my psychological condition error as now whatever happens i think as big trouble , i dont know / i am not sure ])

I keep tire pressures exact , i fill them in 3-4 days , brakes are not tight , chain is well lubricated , whatever possible i did to keep it healthy.

and I have checked the tuning too myself and from the mechs too. in 1.5 turns of the fule screw from full tight it returned 44 , in 3.5-4 turns from full tight it returned near 42-44 .

What is wrong please help. this bike became a real headache for me , and i can not sell it as installment is not over till now ( 6 months left) , warranty gone as i did the piston work from outside as the srvc center asked for more money than outside.

[ i know driving at 85-90 is not advisable in this bike , but i usually don't drive at those speeds , i just checked for the smoke problem , and i usually drive at 50-65 within the city]

    please help.

I am at a loss of words. I don't know what to suggest to you now.

@Others who might feel like helping him out, here is the entire story in chronological order.

i don't see any problem, if 30-34 is wonderful then 40-45 would be astonishing!
btw have you checked the petrol bunk's authenticity, check with fuel metering device or if any adulteration in petrol.
        regards,

I too am quite surprised that a well maintained new bike (2011 is not old) can give so much problems and such a low average when everything is checked and work is done properly.

if carb and engine and clutch is fine do check for chain sprocket wear and ur riding style...clutch cables..accelerator cables and fuel lines...any leaks? try filling from a different petrol bunk and see

a mail to bajaj customer care might help

btw can they SVC guys know that u have done cylinder boring and stuff?? do they know warranty is void?

what happens before burn clutch plates ? is your riding style ?
I think you ride half clutched may be this is the reason for low mileage

check choke cable...may be it is faulty providing continous rich mixture to ur engine and hence a terrible mileage

well thanks all for extending your support once again. a few answers i would like to make.
                  1. i use clutch lesser than it was ago. i am riding it from 1.5 yrs and i use clutch while changing gears and sudden break ( not even when brakking intentionally , i slow down and when rpm drops i pull in and change)
                  2. I can not define that i am a sane rider but not that insane , i like to rev up but in a crowded city like kolkata , in city commuting its hard to drive like that crazy , i usually maintain 50-65 kmph, but occasionally i go above 75-80 ( but very rare) , So let me assume standard mileage 60 , and i am reducing 5 for not being that calm with acceleration so it should return near 55.

                  3. Regarding chain ( i am feeling that something is wrong with it as i had adjusted it two days back but still its making noise , and without helmet i can hear a dragging noise and when on center stand if i shift to 1st the chain is moving but making like a wave ( bouncing and making little noise) . now is it a adjustment problem or something went wrong in my front sprocket ? [ and how much mileage can go down with a chain problem??? ], I will check it tomorrow.

                  4. Regarding oil quality , i tried with variety petrol pumps and found that in all cases mileage varies between 41-45. ( i prefer Indian Oil as the pump is near my house and it is a reputed one to our locality ).

                  5. Discover is a Auto Choke bike ( though the choke never worked that much , however i never faced cold start problem , my bike wakes up with one kick most of the time, i just shake the bike while pressing the front brake to circulate petrol flow ( idk about that if there any valid reason for that) and then kick, after starting i wait for 1-1.5 mins to warm up by keeping the throttle little open , then i move on.

                  6. I opted the free services only from bajaj svc , and after that i never visited there. so now i can assume that warrenty is void.

oh yes auto choke...but still do check into it...may be a temperature sensor in the autochoke gone bad or the choke mechanism gone bad feeding more fuel into the engine than required...

and have u consulted both at SVC and a local trusted mechanic?
