  • CBZ Xtreme consuming engine oil

    Hi All,

I own CBZ Xtreme DDS with 23K on odo. I usually change the engine oil after 1800 km. But from last two times, I've noticed that the quantity of drained oil is just about 650-700 ml.
Intrestingly there is no smoke coming from exhaust nor there is any loss in pickup. I'm using Shell adv AX7 10W40 SS oil since 18k on odo.
Kindly suggest whether it's worn ring issue or something else
    Please help...

I have usually seen that if there is piston ring issue, then there is smoke from the exhaust, but if there is no smoke and if the engine is running smooth, then do the following process to eliminate a possibilty:
after riding the bike, park it in a clean place, after 3-4 hours, check if there is any oil leaked on the ground. If there is any, try to figure out from where it has leaked because it can leak from either sides of the engine due to worn out gasket packing, this happened to my impulse, just replaced the packing for 60 bucks and tipped 20 bucks.
If the leakage is from the drain nut, then possibly the black rubber ring should be replaced (i dont know what to call it)
Also check for the packing at the head.
If there's no leakage as such, then i dont know.

Thanks Viks for your suggestions. I'll definitely try this and report.
Meanwhile is there any Xbhpian who has faced the same issue.
I'm really worried and need some solution to sort this out.

Tilt the bike to both sides one by one.....do you see any leaks ?
Tighten the oil drain bolts and check the gasket... Replace if needed.
            Imo this should help

I could not find any leaks on either side. But 2 months ago, I had replaced the clutch plate and while reassembling the chamber, mech had applied some sort of white adhesive (couldn't remember the name:what: to the chamber as well as gasket to prevent leaks.
Now, I believe that @ jhgh temperatures this adhesive may start leaking

              What do you say.....

Yeah maybe......but imo that adhesive should have been applied to prevent leakage. :/

About 250~300 ml decrease in oil is surely indicating that it has not reduced due to oil leaks. Your bike is smoking at higher rpm's.
To check if its really smoking, do this thing.
Open the spark plug and inspect it. It will tell u all the story what is happening inside the combustion chamber. If u saw your spark plug circle area with full of black carbon. The check to what type of carbon it is?!. If u drag your finger and carbon peels off easily, that means its soft and came due to rich mixture and nothing to worry. If u need blade or something to remove the carbon, and its coming out as a small particle/pieces then its hard carbon, thats came due to oil burning.

Also drag your finger on your exhaust tip. If u found wet type carbon then it means your engine is smoking, and if its dry then nothing to worry.

Check these things and report back, then will give u further guidance.

Also did u noticed any reduce in pickup? lack of pulling efficiency, low mileage or anything?
Can u see oil all over coming out from head packing??
of which year is your bike?

That is called gasket sealant and there is nothing to worry. They are rubber type which seals to prevent any oil leaks and they are resistant upto 200 degree centigrade temperature. Oil cannot leak until its opened again.

                    Hi Paul,
As per your suggestions, I've checked the spark plug and found that it was totally white as if my bike is running lean.
Also, when I inserted my finger into the exhaust pipe, I found only dry carbon deposits on my fingers.

                    Any suggestions

                      One more thing..
I'm using shell ax7 10W40 semi-synthetic oil since 18k on odo and do an oil change after every 2 k.
Is this oil too thin for xtreme?

                      Details of my bike:
                      CBZ Xtreme DDS(Sep 2011) with 23.5 k on odo.

Re: CBZ Xtreme consuming engine oil

Yes your bike is running very lean. Get it tuned from a different mechanic or better try yourself to get best result, then u will love your bike. Here is the guide http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/motorcyc...tml#post904152

No there is no problem in using shell ax7. If u got dry carbon in your exhaust then your bike is not smoking. If there is no leak at all then continue your driving like this way. And check any further decrease in oil level and report back.
Next time u change oil, try Veedol Super Swift 10w40, its also semi-synth, and u will love this oil.

                          Three things here -
                          a) How are you checking the drained oil volume? You collect it in some pan or empty bottle and check the volume or what!?
                          b) Once you have drained the oil, you fill 1 litre of oil and again check its level by checking the dipstick?
                          c) Do you check the volume of oil through the dipstick at regular intervals and before changing the oil?

                            Hi Muztariq,
                            Here are my answers;
                            A) I collected the drained oil in an empty bottle and the measured volume was about 650 ml
                            B) After draining old oil I fill the crank with exactly 900 ml of fresh engine oil as per mentioned in xtreme's owners manual. And at this time level on dipsticlk is exactly between min & max mark.
                            C) Yes, I do check the oil level using dipstick every fortnight, and then only I came to know that bike is consuming oil.
