  • Honda Shine - Black Smoke

I own a honda shine which is 2007 year model.

It has done 24000km. Once it was observed that while riding at 80kmph, smoke start to come from the silencer.

It was also noticed during service, it consumes engine oil. please suggest me the solution.

Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Get the valve's and compression checked. You probably need a top end rebuild (valves, new bore piston kit or a re-bore with new piston kit)

Maybe you need to replace the piston rings. Are you getting any weird sound from the bike?

Re: Honda Shine - Black Smoke

Thank You i done service at Castrol Bike zone in Bangalore. this is first time i had given my shine for service their so they tested bike and they suggested that there is no need to change valve or rebore at this time.
so they change oil and done regular service and advised me to drive for 500km to see the oil consumption and smoke persist then they asked me to bring the for service so that they will do the needful like valve replacement/rebore.

Os the bike still smoking after the service? I think you need a top end rebuild not a general service. A rich mixture causes black smoke too but this is not the case as you mentioned your bike is drinking engine oil. A piece of advise, never trust any mechanic, they are retarded most of the times. I went to a mechanic with my friend once to check why his RX135 making too much noise and not idling properly, that mechanic was considered as best by people here but I could not stop laughing when he said the noise is due to the worn out camshaft, and will need replacement of valves, camshaft and rocker arms. Mind you, that was a 2 stroke bike , so those parts didn't even exist in it. Later we came home and I diagnosed the problem to loose cylinder head bolts. I still wonder how they got loosened up though. I could have fixed it earlier myself but my friend didn't believe in my mechanical skills so he took it to the mechanic.

Yes Stephen. I guess this is becoming a common sight, at least to me here in Chennai. I have seen about 3-4 Honda Shines with smoke from exhausts.

As a quick check from your end, you can check the tip of spark plugs.

*If it is too black and oily all mixed up - 99% it is engine rebuild
*If it is oily only on the threads - valve needs to be seated properly (not a reason for smoke from exhaust though)

Most probably you need to do an engine rebuild. It may include or exclude piston, piston ring set, bore kit, timing chain, crank shaft, con rod, valves, guides, etc., The costs could be arrived only when the engine is opened.

You can get it done from a local mech or from an ASC. While finding a knowledgeable/reliable local mech is a challenge, from ASC you get service warranty as well.
              I suggest ASC.

              Keep us posted! Good luck!

Getting angry at somebody is the same as getting angry with a bike that just won't go. You should stop and start thinking.

It is funny to know that we've been imitated and copied so well
and surprising when we notice our mistakes are copied as well.
