  • I want to import the duke 200

    Hi all,
First of all, am not in India sad I know.
    So here's my story:
Me and a couple other friends in Kenya are looking to import the KTM DUKE 200. 20 of them. We have tried contacting bajaj, but they have been giving us the run around on the issue. They are telling us that we need to contact the local authorised dealer. The problem with the local dealer is that they are holding us hostage on price. For example, the only KTM Duke 200 being sold in the country is being sold at 330000 rupees, a mark up of almost 150% on the original price.
So am appealing to the wide xBHP community, if you know a some one who can help our cause, we would be very appreciative.
If it means coming to India to personally collect the bikes, I would happily do so.
    Hope someone helps

Maybe if someone works in KTM or Bajaj, they might be able to help. Though I do have my reservations about the feasibility.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

1.Is that mark up value imposed by govt or the dealer?
2.One can simply come to India just to buy 20 bike. Here, the dealer will be able offer some discount if you're buying that many bikes. You could even load those bike on a freight to kenya. No problem doing this. You might face problems getting those bikes in your country, problems with customs or related.
      3. If that mark up tax is by govt itself and if you don't good connections in customs then mate, ^ hectic is not worth. You might better off with bajaj dealer on your side.
      4. If the mark up value isn't imposed by govt then good!. While at it buy some Duke390 too.

Re: I want to import the duke 200

The mark up is by the dealer. Tax is only 16% for motorbikes below 250cc, thats why am opting for the 200
Also, am hoping that a KTM dealer will see this and give me a fair price, minus the various road taxes and insurance fees.
I am not really conversant with Indian import/export, so if I get someone willing to crate the bikes and transport them to the nearest port. that would be awesome.
I have also tried talking to Bajaj management at pune, but they keep on insisting that I go through the local dealer.
Also, this might be repeat business, that's why I want to create clear communication lines and transport and even willing to come to india to see this through
        All help is sincerely appreciated

I don't know any KTM dealer here. Why don't you contact KTM dealer from mumbai or ask in duke 200 ownership thread.

Thats a nice idea. I will surely do that. Could you also please give me a rough estimate of how much the duke costs from the factory minus the various road taxes in India?

Mumbai ex showroom price (ie without any tax, insurance etc) Rs. 1,28,751. Plus minus a thousand. Add Rs. 15k extra if opting for ABS version.

Thanks! Now if I can just find a dealer who is willing to crate the bikes and ship them to the nearest port for that amount, that would be golden
Do you have any dealers contact that I can call and talk to?
                    Thanks

Don't ask any dealer to crate the bikes on his own. He'll dupe you, he may send you lemon bikes and you wouldn't be getting any warranty on them overseas. Do fly in here yourself if you have quite some time. Check all the bikes yourself before full payment. If you don't have time then pay somebody here to do the job for you. There are numerous jobs just to do before one put them on a freight. Like negotiating with the dealer, thoroughly getting them checked by special mechanics, fetching money from outside and getting them right here is alone too much hectic and risky if not knowing the correct way, lorrying them right to a port, wax bathing them as they will be exposed to seawater weather for long time. If possible accompany them on the freight. These bikes won't be shipped in wooden container/box like liter class bikes are shipped, so extra care is necessary.
If KTM isn't available the officially then you should also consider buying spare consumables like air filters, brake pads, clutch plates, injectors, sprockets, few 'half engines' and 'heads' just for its sake.

I have imported exported many things many destinations and in many ways so I do know what can easily become pain in the a$$ if not knowing correct or local way of doing things. Even if you plan getting here do hire someone who knows how to do stuff.

Wow. Thanks. I was actually thinking of flying to india. Didn't know about waxing the bike
Are there any special liscences required to export?
And also, is there a port in Mumbai, or will I need to work with the closest sea port?
Definitely buying air filters for the first service. And am suprised that they are not shipped in crates to the dealers, so how are they shipped?
Am hoping to fit them in a 20ft container

Good luck getting anything shipped to African countries by any dealers. Thanks to your Nigerian brothers or should I refer to them as "Prince" scamming people all over the world. Most people tend to regard any transaction from those countries as fraud. I'm afraid you will have to fly over here to get the bike and customs gonna create hell for you man, trust me, without connections you gonna have to wait months if not years to get your hands on the bike. Gati is a good shipping company here that handles international freights, you can visit them at Welcome to Gati Ship I'd say ask different dealers and get what price they quote for the import. Then you can calculate the cost of importing through dealer vs. the cost of doing it yourself. Here is a list of licensed clearing agents from Kenya customs website http://www.kra.go.ke/customs/pdf/THE..._YEAR_2008.pdf It's from 2008 though.
                          I am back!

I will ask my dad about it. He is been in this import/export field for 35 years now.
Let you know on monday. Also, if you cant get it shipped from mumbai due to strictness of customs here, gujarat is always an option. But yes, for this you will have to come here, make the payment and take the bikes as we indians dont even trust our brothers when money is involved, everythng will be legal, though i dunno how much tax/duty will have to pay in kenya for importing these monsters.

Thanks soo much. This would really help. Someone had adviced me to go directly to the bajaj factory at pune. Cut out the dealers and hopefully get a better price since its a large number of bikes.
Also, does there exist different laws for different parts of india? Because you are advicing me to try Gujarat?
It seems that handling money is an international problem, we have the same problem here, I can trust my neighbour with my house keys
