  • Problems with my Yamaha FZ16

    Hi guys,

I have been riding a Yamaha FZ16 for nearly 1 year now and have done about 6000 kms on it. Although it is a very smooth ride, I am experiencing two problems

    1. Engine misfire

It not too much, but I hear a muffled popping sound when i rev down(leave the accelerator). I never hear it while revving up. As usual my lackluster SVC mechanic says it is normal, although this sound is new to me. SVC cleaned the spark plug and air filter but did not clean carb even after I insisted. I also experienced a slight power loss in the lower revs but I am not a very good judge of that. I am a heavy person (95kg) and get 105-110kph topspeed, although the pick up has reduced slightly. I have never got my carb tuned since I bought my bike. Should I do it?

P.S. I get a burning smell from time to time when I go at high rpms for sometime, but after reading other people's experiences about this, it seems to be normal and unrelated, but I thought I'd put it out there.

    2. Handle vibration and "tak-tak" noise

The handle vibrates on bumpy roads. When going on large bumps or speedbreakers I get 2 "tak" sounds from under the speedo (probably where the steering section connects to the main frame). I had this opened from a local mechanic and he wanted to change some bearings. The stock bearings come in a plastic casing, while he wanted to put in standard bearings, so I refused. The SVC tightened the handle which reduced vibration, but the tak tak sound still persists. They discouraged me from changing bearings.

I was very disappointed with the hurried service the SVC has done so far and as I am done with my free services, I was wondering what maintenance should I do(eg. part change, regular checks) now that I have completed a significant distance? I love this bike and am very particular about little things which the mechanics at the SVC don't have time to look into. I hope you huys can help me. Thanks!

    Also,

I am looking for a good mechanic in Kolkata. Please help out!

      ***Quick fixes***

Engine misfire: It is also called as popping.
      1. Check for air leak around exhaust and carb boots.
      2. Check the AFR which should not be too lean.
      3. Clean spark plugs and re-install or replace if necessary.

      Handle vibration and 'tak-tak':

      1. Tighten the fork nut and drive around to check.
      2. If it still persists, check front bearings (remote possibility of being busted).
      3. Final solution is to replace fork cone set (especially if you have driven on harsh bumpy roads on a regular basis).

        Thanks a lot, petrolhead..

I have tightened the handle, and the vibration has reduced a lot, although the tak sound still persists. I'll get the coneset checked out around this weekend.

Can you elaborate as to how to check for air leaks on the exhaust and carb?

This link should give you a head-start for air/vacuum leak in carb. As for the exhaust a good mechanic should be able to find out.
If even after checking all this, the bike still misfires, then you need to check the timing and valve/guides which again is a remote possibility of malfunction.

Okay, so after a a lot of tightening loosening experimemt, I got my cone set replaced. Cost only 225 bucks. The '"tak" sound is gone now, although slight vibration/wobble still persists. The mechanic informed its a regular problem with FZs, because of the cone set design(something to do with a rubber washer.) I don't know how much he is correct.

For the misfires, he advised me to add a bit of mobil into the fuel from time to time. He was against opening and cleaning the carb, citing that the longer the carb remains untouched, the better. I also have a feeling that the misfires could be rainwater going in the tank, so maybe waiting is a good option. Should I add the mobil as he advised?

I do not think so! I haven't come across such a prescription .

Re: Problems with my Yamaha FZ16

Please don't add mobil or anything else into the petrol.

The exhaust popping you are referring to is not engine misfiring. Your engine is fine. Your carb is also fine. And yes exhaust popping is indeed a normal phenomenon and will not affect your bike in any way.

The reason it started was because you got your air filter changed, a new filter lets in more air, thus leaning out the mixture. Hence the popping sound. I won't go into what causes the pop and all.

There are two things you can do:

                1) Don't do anything. Because as your air filter gets dirty and clogs up, the AF mix will go back to normal and your popping will fade and ultimately disappear.
                2) Adjust your AF screw slightly to make the idle circuit slightly richer. Turn the AF mix screw on your carb by no more than half a turn and make your AF mix richer. You will find that popping reduces a lot. And there is no need to open the carb for turning one screw.

I haven't changed my air filter. But thanks a lot for the response. It was probably the rainwater seeping into the tank, as I don't get the popping as much anymore. Although it is more frequent when I have a pillion with me.

My brother got a pulsar 180 sometime back. As he is new to riding, I rode the bike for about 20km from the showroom. I found the accelerator to be much more free than my FZ throttle. The FZ throttle doesnt stick or anything but is just way tighter to turn and it has been that way since it was new. If its not the cable lube, what else could be the problem? Same with the clutch.

I am planning on upgrading the headlamp on my bike. I have looked into HIDs and projectors, The chinese ones seem to be affordable, but I am not sure of their reliability, The philips and osram ones are costing above 10k.

So I am thinking of going for higher wattage (55w nightbreakers) halogens. But I donno if I should put 55w bulbs in both high beam and low beam sockets. Will the battery take the combined 110w load when I use my pass switch? Also what is the color of the light in nightbreakers (I wanted white light)?
