  • Help: Pulsar 220 DTS - Fi Exhaust Woes

    Hello Everyone,

First off, it's good to be here. Back in 2007, when I was about to purchase the P220 DTS - Fi, it's then that I sought advice from the members here. I haven't had a chance to re-visit the forum much after that, but it's really good to see that xbhp has become much, much bigger.

I've managed to maintain my P220 well over the course of the last 6 years, except the last year when I had to leave it in Mumbai, and could only retrieve it once the rains had stopped.

During transit to Bangalore, the exhaust had broken off at the point where the tail pipe connects to the cylinder (through a strip with rivets). The pro-biking service stations didn't have a new one in stock (and did not know when they would have any stock) , so I had to purchase one in the local market. It's only been a couple of days since the exhaust has been replaced, and the darned thing has already started to give up on me.

Anyways, I'm going to yell at the guy who sold me this and try to get my money back, however, as I see it, here are my options:

    1. Replace with another silencer from the local market, and pray to the gods !

    2. Leave my bike in the service station, and wait for a month or two before Bajaj finally manufactures one on order.

    3. Procure an after - market exhaust (something quiet though)

Is there another way to procure the original exhaust, either from Pune or Bangalore ? A shop that may stock the original silencer, perhaps ?

Also, I realize that this may be a somewhat unintelligent question, but why I can't I just fit the exhaust for the newer Pulsar 220 DTS i on to the DTS-Fi ? They do look strikingly similar.

    Suggestions ? Recommendations ? General Advice ?

    Much Appreciated

    Thanks in advance

    Help Topic Approved.

Just keep running this exhaust temporarily, until you get the one made for P220 DTS Fi. You won't really get an aftermarket exhaust as "quiet" as you want. Aftermarket is an area of noise and roar. Simple. In aftermarket, you can approach Automech Mumbai, or Joel Joseph from Bengaluru.

Exhausts have certain build characteristics & measurements of various parts in them. A stock exhaust is very good in terms of performance and mileage both. The exhausts of different generations of bikes are different "inside the pipe/ end can". That's because different bikes have different scavenging attributes/ backforce.

In any case, an exhaust made for a particular bike must be retained that way. Because if you mess with it, you will lose somewhere, in performance, engine smoothness or mileage. For example, P150 UG3's exhaust has a 24mm catalytic converter in the pipe. P180 UG3's exhaust has 29mm. And you know what?
Even a legendary mechanic can't spot a distance between these 2 exhausts from beyond 1 meter far away. They look similar but internals are changed.

To answer your question, Yes, the P220 DTSi exhaust will fit your bike. But its not optimum for your bike's mileage/ performance, so, I suggest you wait for the original exhaust only.... Pester Bajaj's dealership to get it somehow.

Why don't you try calling up pro biking center in Chennai and see if they have stock of one? If they do, you could probably come down in few hours in a KPN/KSRTC. I feel it would be worth it.

Getting angry at somebody is the same as getting angry with a bike that just won't go. You should stop and start thinking.
A good mechanic will let you watch even without charging you for it. |

Go for a dtsi 220 exhaust... Only difference is a slightly bigger catcon on the dtsi one.. There will be a slight variation in performance but wont be anything earth shattering..

Re: Help: Pulsar 220 DTS - Fi Exhaust Woes

          Hello,

My pulsar 220F DTSI 2009 edition starts good and is fine for the first 10 to 20 kms, then when I down shift to may be 3rd, 2nd or in 1st Gear, the sound coming out is weird, tup, tup, put put .. and then in top gear the base sounds well, so the PBK guys here suggested that your silencer from inside may be holed up and need to either disect the pipe and check the muffler to weld it or buy a new one .. so guys what are your opinions on this ? I don't want to go for after market stuff.
