  • New headlight bulb and engine oil

Hi, I have to commute 3 times a week or on a route where 60% is a highway and hence badly illuminated. I broke my bulb sometime back and my mechanic installed some el cheapo bulb which illuminates squat !

So long story short, I want to install a nice bright branded bulb from Milan subway.

Thing is I have no idea what wattage my 2000 yr HH CBZ uses. Also would appreciate it if someone has a regular guy at Milan Subway who could install it.

I am also looking at changing my engine oil. Is Shell any good ? They do the servicing for free (i.e. only pay for the oil). Also what engine oil can I use (20w40 or 20w50 ? )

I dont have the CBZ manual, hence the questions.

    Query Approved.

Your query is neither 'here' nor 'there' (read "light" thread nor "engine oil" thread). Hence, I couldn't even merge it in either of the threads.

Since yours is the older CBZ, I guess it will need 20W40. Definitely not 20W50. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

There are loads of 20W40 oils in the market. Shell should be fine, if the right grade is available. Or try the new Gulf Pride. You should go thru the oil thead for more.

Your bulb will most likely be 35 watts. Not sure though.

Thanks ! Did a bit more reading after I posted. The bulb is a 35 watt bulb. Was thinking of something like an Osram Nightbreaker but it seems you need a better coil or something. So I guess I will get a regular Philips bulb or Osram bulb.

I will stick with Shell oil simply because it is on my way back from office and they do the servicing while you wait. I cannot trust my mechanic since he put some el cheapo oil (he puts el cheapo everything in my beloved bike ) that is causing my engine to sound gruff at anything above 60 kmph.

Any good shop that is recommended at Milan subway (or is there some better place to get this bulb ?). I read about some place near Opera house, but I belive that is exclusively for cars right ?

As long as you use a bulb of same wattage, you dont need to change anything else. As for Osram, etc., others will be able to guide you better.

Are you talking about a Shell Petrol bunk?? Do they change the oil in front of you (I dont suppose you mean general servicing, like you mentioned)? Thats very good! You should never trust mechs for anything.

Btw, Gulf Pride is rated for a longer drain period. Anyway, thats your choice. Whatever it is, just make sure its a bike oil!

Bulb. Most Hero Hondas & Hondas are coming with the Philips HS1 type bulbs that are made in Germany. I have recently checked at a HH spares & Honda spares... same bulb is available at both of them but with HH it is Rs 95 (even Splendour+ uses the same) and with Honda it is Rs 190.

That is a good one... try to get it.

Oil. Gulf Pride 4T Plus is damn good. 20W40 is the spec u need. What ever, Shell is not good. Pls don't try. Any roadside mechanic would change oil for you for Rs 10. Buy a bottle of good oil and carry it. Also, you can very happily use the Honda oil or even the Yamalube.

Thats an intresting observation you have made about the bulbs. I want to replace the ordinary bulb in my Shogun (35 watts) to a halogen. Do you think buying the Philips bulb from Hero Honda for Rs. 95 and fixing it on my Shogun would be the best idea?

Shell Advance is not good?? You have tried it yourself?

Ah crap ! I tried some headlights but it seems my beam is too high. It brightens up the cars in front but not the road.

My friend told me he installed a switch to connect his headlight to the battery. Is this feasible ? I saw his headlight and it was BRIGHT !!! (On stock bulb).

Also my bike was sounding really bad at speeds > 60 and I needed oil quickly. Tried a few places at Airoli and they all gave me blank stares when I mentioned Gulf or Motul.

I saw a Veedol Take off engine oil can which costs 195. It was 20w40 so I used that. Its far better than my current oil and found that i was reaching higher speeds with a lesser RPMs. Is that possible or is it just a glitch ?

For instance I usually cruise at 60 kmph and the RPM stays constant at 5k. However now at 5k I am doing a steady 65 kmph. Can just changing the engine oil do this ?

Thats definitely not the way to drive! You are putting yourself and others at risk!!

You can't improve a bulb's rated output just by connecting it to a battery (provided its getting the rated current... which it should be, in your case).

You can email Gulf and ask them where/how you can get a can.

Veedol does make good oils. Do let us know your experience with it towards the end.

^^^Not really. Actually diesel engines and bikes make somewhat similar demands on oils. There is a school of though that says HD diesel oil are better for bikes! There are some people who use it in their bikes.
