  • upgrading headlight of pulsar 180 UG4

    Hi Everyone,

I have pulsar 180 UG4 bought in march this year, mostly I travel from home to office and back, I travel on highway while coming back to home in night and I am not satisfied with the brightness of headlight on highway so I decided to upgrade its bulb. Currently bike has 30/35 watt HS1 bulb, while searching for a good bulb I found a 60/65 watt H4 bulb on eBay. I did some google and found that I can use H4 type bulb in HS1 socket of my bike. I am a software engineer not a mechanic but I believe in "Do it yourself", because this is my bird and this task don't seems to be much difficult that's why I want to do it myself, also I will get better technical understanding of my bike which will help for any further mods. I did some research and took help of some experts online and summary of my research is that new bulb is twice powerful then existing one so it will put double load on existing wiring so if I want to use this 60/65 watt bulb then I have to do some wiring by putting a SPDT relay & inline fuse to prevent extra load on current wiring and switches. The circuit diagram for this is as below. I have taken this image from a site and I think circuit diagram for my case would be same. Everything is clear but as I explained earlier I am not a mechanic so to understand the wiring of bike I need wiring diagram of Pulsar 180 UG4.

I need guidance of experts on this forum to please guide me on this. Please help me understanding wiring of my bike so that I can do it myself.

Please let me know if what I researched is ok or if I am mistaking somewhere.

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

The relay is of no use as it will not work in pulsar Ug4 and onward pulsar 180/150 models.
if you will Just put 55/60 watts bulb then this will lead to the discharge of the battery as stock charger and coil will not support the load of 55/60 watts bulb so you need to change the charger to the ape rr and then you need to rewind the stator coil.

are you sure relay will not work pulsar 180 UG4? I am not sure if these things are bike dependent.
Also how much would it cost if I change charger and stator coil? and which charger and stator coil should I have to put?

Charger should be ape rr and stator coil you have to rewind with 18.5 gauge wire..

you should find nearest service or spare part shop of Piaggio from there you will get ape rr(regulator/rectifying)

go to this link to find the nearest piaggio service & spare point
                Piaggio : Our Network

after reaching piaggio service & spare point ask for regulator/rectifying or say charger.
it would be like this(in newer model there are 6 wire the extra two wires are of no use for us)

Since your bike is already DC why not plonk in a 35/35 W HID???
I had the same set up on my UG IV.. trust me its pretty bright.. & Since I wanted to use the HIDs only on HighWays or in Dark Alleys I'd only high beam HID where are the low beam was normal halogen.. It worked awesome..
And moreover, its a direct plug and play device.. no hassle at all

You can check out my last posts on the Pulsar 180 ownership thread; I'd put up pics of the how the bulb looks.

Before thinking about this mess of putting relay and all this stuff I was thinking to use HID and I talked to a mechanic nearby and he said HID comes with its set of wires, bulbs, ballasts etc and that whole setup would cost around 2.5 to 3k which I think is bit expensive so I took help of some other forum and they suggested me this solution of putting relay etc..

How much it cost you to put HID in your pulsar and could you please provide a link to pics of HID and normal helogen bulb comparison that you are talking about.

Oops!! Sorry I totally neglected the budged/price factor.. Yeah the HIDs are costly and I can't recollect how much I had paid for it since I'd bought them a good 2 years ago.. But current might be 2.5k..

Consider this ; the HIDs are costly but will not hamper the bike's electricals since there is no MODs , no cutting and it'll be 35 W so no batt drain as well...

You can also think on getting Philips Xtreme Vision bulbs which will be brighter for sure....

Sorry bro but I don't have pics of the light's intensity & brightness on road but below link you can see the set up

Boss, what is the battery rating in your bike? I mean - how many ampere hours (AH)?

My bike (Karizma ZMR) has 6 AH battery
I upgraded from the 35w halogen to 60w Osram Night Breaker (h4 type bulb)

Cost me 600 bucks. Did it myself.

P.S - I never needed any relay. But, the ZMR's wiring can take loads upto 238 Watts IIRC. Its been running fine for 6 months without a glitch.

So, I need you to gather 2 bits of info:-
                        1. Battery rating. - 4/5/6/7/8/9 AH
                        2. Load that the stock wiring can take in Watts. (you can put SMD LEDs as pilot lamps and number plates' lights to reduce a little load)
                        Got a $5 head? Get a $5 helmet.
Because everyone who passes, isn't a martyr!

The Batt rating on the 180 is 9AH but the reflectors aren't that good to take up the heat from a 55w/60w bulb.. the reflector/transparent covering in front of the bulb will blacken on the long run..
Not sure if the wiring can take up the load on the bike..

@Divya Sharan: I just couldn't recollect the name 'Osram Night Breaker' thanks for pointing that out...

@Thread started.. you can check out Philips Xtreme vision (costly) and also the Osram Night Breaker (if 35w is available) .. The later one is inexpensive and will be brighter than the stock bulb..

But still the HIDs would be your best bet.

Actually price was the concern because of which I switched to relay option. 2.5-3K is not that much. I i'll think about both the options and will choose economic but best one. I guess HID projector lamp will be good bet for long run and it won't damage stock reflectors and could be easily undone.

What is your opinion on HID projector lamp and Angel eyes mod.

                              regarding headlight

I too have a 2 year pulsar 180 and i am also not satisfied with the intensity of the headlight. So what did you do finally??
                              Peace
