  • Hero Glamour -- White smoke from the exhaust

My glamour is nearly 2 Years old, 21500 kms on the ODO. I went to the ASC for a normal paid service and told them about the bad fuel efficiency i am getting (~45 kmpl). They checked and revved the engine hard in my presence, and i could se some black smoke from exhaust on very high revs. They said they will take care of it and the mileage and i can check the mileage with them in the evening after the service. When i went to the ASC in the evening to take the delivery, the mechanic said that there is very light white smoke now at high revs, and they have taken care of the black smoke. When i asked the reason for the white smoke, they said it happens and they didn't gave me a reason for it. Now they are suggesting a half engine job (as they say it) to rectify the white smoke. I cannot observe the white smoke myself, they said they saw it very light at high revs. My bike is under warranty, they are going to charge me around 1k for parts not under warranty. My query is, how can that issue with the engine happen when i got the bike serviced regulary, ensured proper run-in etc. Yes the bike has been abused very occasionally, like touching the 100kmph mark once in a few months.
And, what parts will be replaced, and i'm worried if the engine would be normal after that half engine job ( all i know about it is they were speaking something about a block change )

Re: Hero Glamour -- White smoke from the exhaust

Hi, AFAIK, the black smoke is due to carbon deposition in the silencer pipe due to oil burning in the cylinder. I think thats not a big issue. Regarding white smoke, you should observe, at what speed/RPM it is coming. If it is coming in low speed/rpm's then it can be related to issue with piston rings, especially the oil ring. There may also be an issue with cylinder head. You need to get valves checked. If needed get them decarbonized and re-seated. Even in some cases, wrong timing could be the problem. If the bike is under warranty, how can they charge you 1000 rs ? Verify each point before you proceed with the work. Good luck !

at what intervals do you get your bike serviced? Do you use Hero's stock engine oil with 10W30 grade? Check for oil level after completing 200 kms.. if the oil level reduces as compared to 200 kms before, then the engine is eating up Oil..

Reasons could be - piston rings or oil rings.. The gap between them might have increased and is getting leaked into the chamber..

        steps to identify.
        1. check for carbon deposits on the tip of the silencer. if there is carbon, high chances of oil getting burned..
        2. check the oil level (make sure your bike is parked in main stand for atleast half an hour before you check the oil level and make sure you check in flat surface). Note the level. Ride the bike for 200-250 kms and check if the oil level has reduced or remains the same.

if oil level has reduced, then oil is being burnt..

if this is the case and you are using 10W30, try using 15W40 or 20W40.. Oil is thick and won't leak through the oil ring as easily as 10W30..

otherwise you can get the piston rings and oil rings changed..

P.S. Is there any loss in power??

P.P.S. Am not an expert and if experts find any flaw in my post, please feel free to correct me.

The white smoke is due to oil ring.... its part of the engine component and they have to do it entirely under warranty... only oil cost should be charged...
talk to them again or call up the customer care and write a mail to them

Sorry for late reply, i have been very busy. Yes there is carbon depositon on the silence pipe. I'm still not sure about the white smoke, i have revved it fairly high and cannot observe any white smoke, or if it is there, its not visible to a normal person at fairly high/not redlining revs. Yes the bike is in warranty and they have placed the order for the engine block and other parts, and yesterday they called and told me that the parts are available now. 1000 rs is due to some rubber parts and other parts which are not under warranty. I'm just curious as to what i might have done to cause this (alleged) problem.

Sorry for the late reply, i did got it serviced regularly, according to the service schedule. Service schedule suggest 3-3.5kms or 100 days, and i got it serviced much before that, like 2.5k kms. Yes i use the stock hero engine oil 10W30. I have nearly completed a 1000 kms after that diagnosis, so yes i will check oil levels ASAP. I'm not sure about the loss in power, if it is there, it is very less, barely noticable. Yes there are carbon deposits on the silencer tip, is that enough of a marker to tell that engine has a problem?

They told me that the overall cost would be around 6k but they charge for parts not under warranty and that should be around 1k. Also, i contacted an ASC at a place away from the ASC where they diagnosed this, the mechanic was sure that there is no problem in the bike, he said there should be some wetness on the silencer tip to suggest burning oil, but as there was just some carbon deposits, he said the engine is just fine and i should just check oil levels at some intervals carefully. I will tell the ASC that the other ASC said there is no problem, lets see what they have to say. The other ASC guy also revved it hard and we both could'nt see any white smoke.

You must realize that Hero bikes are only designed for 40-50km/hr speeds, beyond which you'll get premature engine wear.

I have a Karizma and it's engine was gone at 25K kms. Then people say Hero bikes are reliable. They're not. Bajaj is much more reliable and they're cheaper too.

It depends upon maintenance, I've a new generation super splendor which has completed 37k kilometers without any single problem. Still rocking !

Exactly that's what I'm taking about -- you run Hero bikes at 40 50 speeds, things will be ok. The moment you cross 60 regularly, the engine will be gone soon.

All servicing done by official service centre. Actually they were using Splendor engine oil (cheap mineral oil) for Karizma which thins down because of sheer stress in ~ 400kms. If I would've continued using that oil, the bike would've lasted only 10K kms.
