What was the alt you traveling at? You dont need it so soon, I have know someone who ride his bike without any extra tunning to Khardungla.
For better result in high alt try removeing the air filter.

wont removing the air filter make his bike more lean/out of tune??

no. The air density gets lesser and as a result, the mixture gets richer with the air filter on. Removing the air filter helps the engine draw more air and the air/fuel ratio gets close to normal.

            Personally experienced this at khardungla.

@oilburner - two options. Either remove the air filter and don't mess with the air fuel mix or keep the air filter and adjust the mixture accordingly. I found the first option easier to implement on the road.

@deepakumar - one thing you must not do is upjet tho . The stock jet, with K&N should be fine. planning to do it next time.

depends on the riding conditions. Roads up there are pretty steep and bad - you're most likely in the 3rd or 4th gear. You can expect a max of 35 km/lit.

                        It shouldn't drop too much that usual..say 2-3 km/pl..!!

With the bike breathing more and being more responsive, you will push to bike than normal. There the difference.

There is a performance increase only in case when the Jet is also upgraded..

actually the funda is that the K&N air filter lets more air inside the engine than required(as per the stock settings of the air intake)..!! The performance is based on the balance between the air and the fuel mixture which the engine gets...but after the installation of the K&N air filter more air enters but on the other hand the fuel being flown in the engine is still as per the stock jet..so due to this fuel is not properly burnt/utilized for combustion..which causes drop in mileage..

On the other hand if the stock jet is upgraded then that allows more fuel to come in for combustion along with more air...so there is an increase in the performance..!!

This is what i know about the relation b/w K&N and performance..

The stock jet size for the ZiMA is 125..so you can upgrade to 130 to get better performance after the installation of the K&N filter..
