• [Photo Feature]: 2008 Honda UniCorn Block Piston Probelm

Well, the unicon belongs to my dad originally.
We bought it 2008,Sep.

Here is some brief Stats of the bike:-

The bike has completed 53k.

From the date of buying this bike has been a beauty. No prblem at all. During these years, apart from the scheduled servicing these replacements has been made...

1. CHAIN KIT REPLACE at 25K ( service person told us to do this in 18K).
2. Battery change.
3. Rear Tyre replacement at 50K.
4. Shocker oil change ( outside from the A.S.S).

The bike do regular city tour of 10-20 kms per day and as well as Highway tours ( twice in a month).

recently for some days, specially after changing the rear Tyre; a noise coming whenever we are pressing the rear break pedal. First dad ignored but then the sound gradually becoming high enough, SO today I went to service center and told them about it; they took the bike and later they said that the rear brek pads to be replaced they further told me to change the disk break pads too and for a new chain kit.

They pointed out some other problems that mentioned in the bill.

1. Handle bar change. ( this was due to an accident happened around 5-6 months ago)
2. recker ball or somthing.
and the most importantly
3. work on block piston.

the first two was not much of tension but the block piston problem made me worried. I asked them why works need to be done on piston, they said that whenever the RPM is around is more than 5000. the smoke is getting black and this indicates of piston problem.

after returning back to home I tried myself doing that; what I've found there is visible smoke whenever the RPM is more than 4500 the some is not really black but whitish.
and after lower the RPM that white smoke persist for 3-5 sec then it vanishes no smoke at all.

My question to the seniors is that really a BLOCK PISTON problem or the bike just need a new bottle of Mobil? and what to do?
please suggest.

Approved!
You may first get only the piston rings changed and observe over 500 km if there is a loss in the oil level and if smoke persists.
Got a $5 head? Get a $5 helmet.

To be on safe side i would recommend changing both block and rings as a set . If possible lap valves and clean head as engine will be stripped , change valve guide as unicorn has tumorous compression leak issue due to that . If possible buy hero block it not honda one. sibun can you tell which one will fit in unicorn ? There is one for achiever and one for xtreme . Both are 149cc but are different.

I have same bike and just at 24k i am getting symptoms of low compression. Honda bore kit doesnt last any more than 60-70k even though you take utmost care of the engine.

Oh that too many works to be done on the engine.
What about the budget?
Besides the honda a.s.s guys are not much of reliable.
Yesterday found that the speedo niddle is shaking with the increase in speed. And in a steady speed it racting in same way..just went to the service centre the service guy told me that it cannot be fixed. The whole console needs to change.

Personally I don't feel any power loss or low compressions till now.

I have exact same bike as yours, even same color. Cost for top end rebuild will be est 5k maybe 1k more if something pops up. You said you are not feeling low compression but smoke from exhaust tells oil has been seeping in to chamber for atleast 1-2k kms. So best will be to change entire bore kit and if possible clutch plates too as old ones will slip with newly developed power . One can do all these within 4-5 hours and SVC should be avoided at any costs. Try finding a mechanic competent enough to do all this .

Re: 2008 Honda UniCorn Block Piston Problem

As regular I went to market today morning to get some grocery; on my way to coming back I found that the speedo is not working & the needle is at 0.
Well, it is not even one week that I changed the cable from ASC; this time I did not made the mistake to go to the Honda ASC.
I contacted one of my friends; he suggested me; a good mechanic near my home. I went to him and told him the problem. He took the cable out from the front wheel and then removed the front part, (The other end was connected to the console.) what I saw was really frustrating, the cable which is inside the rubber insulation is totally worn out; I dont understand what the ASC did. and that is the main reason of the tickling/shaking of the speedo to.
Further he only changed the cable inside costs only 22 and gave him RS. 20 for fitting.. The speedo problem have solved.
told him about the block piston problem too. He told that as there is not much smoke now, only the RING CHANGE will do. he estimated not more than 2K.

2k just for ring change? Are Honda spares that costly?

I also own a Honda Unicorn, can you tell me what exactly are these "symptoms of low compression" you speak of? My bike has done 14K kms, any tips for me so that I can keep it running smoothly for long.

Also, what are the service intervals of a Unicorn?
