• Weird problem with my TB 500

Hello all, I write this in absolute stumped state of mind ... I have been facing a weird problem with my TB 500 and not able to get my head around it. Hopefully the brilliant minds in here can help shed some light on this situation ...

A quick intro .. I own a TB 500 2014 model and done around 9600 kms .. I stay in mumbai and I use my bike to get to work and back which is about 65 kms round trip .. five days a week. Been out of the city a couple of times but mostly use it for office runs..

I have been facing this issue of engine randomly cutting off after about riding for an hour. The engines shuts abruptly mostly during slowing down for a turn or signal after riding smoothly for an hour or so. The engine just goes dead with no response from the push button start. The malfunction light( which usually comes on and stays on for a few seconds on ignition) doesn't come on and the bike just refuses to start. Weirdly the horn, headlights all work fine which tells me that there is no electrical issue (recently changed the battery as well). It just refuses to start. After letting it cool (happened a few times usually 15-20 mins) the malfunction light lights up and the engine starts and functions properly. Since i owned the TB have noticed that it is prone to overheating and after discussing with a few RE mechanics... Got to know that 500 cc mill does heat up a little more than usual but its not something to be alarmed about. I have gotten used to the heating but this engine shutting off and being non responsive for extended periods of time out of nowhere is a mystery to me. I did my last oil change and servicing at 6500 kms ( around 4 months ago). If it was an electrical issue, then it should affect all electrical components and not just ignition. More on point is the fact that once the engine rests for a bit, everything just starts out like nothing happened and i am left scratching my head. This has happened to me on multiple occasions in the last couple of weeks and I just dont know what the issue could be. These engines are pretty robust and are built to sustain in pretty harsh conditions. Its worrisome to see this weird perk in my TB.

Will be really grateful if anyone could help me solve this peculiar problem..

    Thanks guys !!

    Waiting to hear from you

Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

The ECU shuts the engine off, if the temperature crosses the limit. It's a safety feature. Please check the engine oil level and top up, if necessary. If it is okay, get it checked at the authorized service station. I have done many rides of 1,000+ km in 24 hours without facing this issue even once.

I agree with ECU shutting down the engine as a safety feature. RE 500cc is a rather large single pot with air cooling, ergo it needs air to cool it. More traffic, means lesser speeds, lesser speeds mean lesser air flow over the block and hence lesser heat dissipation. add to it traffic conditions and all and you would have an explanation of why the engine is heating up.

Unless the bike is also emitting smoke, loss of power and/or you are getting unusual fuel consumption as well as oil depletion (which would indicate engine issues) you are facing an over heating engine.

now this cannot be termed as a Problem, its only a result of all worst case scenarios clubbed together!

Changing riding habits, not revving more than needed, keeping the engine in speed appropriate gears, shutting the bike in traffic signals, avoiding half clutching, avoiding riding the clutch/brake etc are some of the things that can help reduce the issue.

Do let us know how you resolved the issue and if there was any other acute problem detected.

If I am right, the TB500 has an FI engine.. Can you please help me with the location of the Fuel pump?? If it is located on the outside.. see if it gets hot when the bike turns off.. I had a friend who owns a ZMR and the similar issue cropped up with his bike and on inspecting, it was the fuel pump which was the culprit.. On heating, the bike stops and after some time when the fuel pump gets cool, the bike starts.. I am not sure if this is the same issue you are facing, but just a possible reason..

Might have to check the fuel supply from the Fuel pump after engine get shut off

The fuel pump is located inside the petrol tank in Thunderbird 500.

IF this is the case, then the TS must check for fuel supply from the Fuel Pump when the engine shuts off after engine heat up..

maybe an expert like psr sir can assist
