  • please suggest good mechanic in Ahmedabad for Pulsar 150 engine rebuild!!

    Hello EveryOne,
My self Umang. I am Currently living in Ahmedabad .I have secondHand Pulsar 150 (Dec 2009) Model which is currently score 69000km on odo-meter. Initially it was running fine for first 2 months.currently i am facing various issues such as:-
1)Engine is eating Oil very speedily like is consuming full liter oil in nearly one month.
2)Mileage is drooped to 35km/l .seriously it gives me much more stress..
3)there is white smoke from silencer .(that is indication for engine eating oil)
4)Engine is not at all smooth , i am really serious about its Sound and vibrations .Sometimes i feel like it will explode at any time when running at more than 70km/h.
5)Digital display is displaying 0km/h or Random speed .

i have given it for service to local mechanic last Tuesday .he told me that your engine need to be rebuild but he says that success rate of engine rebuild of Pulsar is very less so suggested me to sold that bike .but i really want to know reality. and he gives me approx cost of 7000rs .Guys please help me and if i should go for engine rebuild then which parts i should replace and also give me cost for that . i have contacted ASC they told me that half engine rebuild costs 4000-5000rs and full costs 8000-10000rs . Is these prices are true ?? and if possible then suggest me trusted mechanic for it in ahmedabad. and what about performance and mileage of bike after engine rebuild??

    Topic Approved.

Please get its piston rings checked and replaced if they're worn out. That should solve the oil leaking. You might need to get Block piston replaced too. This will cost some Rs. 2500-3500 or so. Check with the dealer. Then see if the problem is solved.

Digital speedo is doing so due to damaged wire leading from the wheel to the console. One wire is damaged out of the three most probably. Get that replaced too.
The prices mentioned do not clarify what all parts are to be changed, but the quoted price seems a little more than normal...

thanks for your quick response ... i am now confused that replacing block piston will make engine like new?? and what mileage i can expect after engine rebuild (block piston)?
can you please enlist all parts that should be replaced with cost and if possible then tell me approximate cost with labor work.

the local mechanic says he can not fix display it should be replaced !!omg i have also faced display problem earlier but it was solved by cleaning it by petrol but that was done from past location so i can not go there as that place is far from current.

      thanks in advance.

It will make it almost like new, but not shining new.
Obviously, there is a head above the piston, and down below there is crankshaft and gearbox, which remain the same older ones.

But yes, your problem of oil burning should most probably be solved if all else seems ok.

I can't comment on Mileage, because that depends on your riding too. It should improve, once the oil stops burning, for sure.

The parts are piston with piston rings, engine block, engine gaskets for sealing the engine, etc. In rare case, you might need a new chain tensioner, although old one will do well too.

Keep in mind that running your engine without oil, may cause a engine seizure, as quick as in 5 minutes of riding, so, keep checking oil level!

This is true that mostly the console gets replaced only. However, please check clearly, if the wires from the wheel to the console are in good condition. Sometimes they're the ones causing the speed error. or probably the connectors to this wire.
Because if the console is going wrong, it may cause bigger problems like no display at all, erroneous display, etc. but you're saying that only speed is displayed as zero or random wrong figure.
I have personal experience with the Pulsar that showed 0 or wrong figures, just because the one of the 3 cable wires was broken.

Finally got half engine rebuild at ASC for Rs 7200 and also replaced chain kit as suggested by them and total cost is 9100rs. Now my question is engine sounds smooth now but I am getting mileage around 40kmpl but ASC person told me that you will get 50+ kmpl on your pulsar 150 . now please suggest me proper solution for this .currently I am riding bike under 50-55 km/h for first 1000 km .

So you paid 9100 for just a block, piston kit and a sprocket kit? Well... Anyhow, no point crying over spilt milk, its gone now.

Change your engine oil in exactly 500 kms from this rebuild. Use a little more oil then prescribed if possible.
After 500 kms with this setup, and oil change, start pushing upto 6000 rpm, and go back to lower rpms immediately, continue this till 2000 kms, after that you can start pushing to its limits slowly...

Meanwhile, check if there's a fuel or oil leakage anywhere, plus check your spark plug's tip. It should be dark brown.
Too blackish means its running rich, and too much of a light brown dry tint means its running lean, both these situations are bad for mileage, performance or engine life. If so, then get the carburetor tuned by a better mechanic...

Yes, your mileage will increase after service and oil change! Meanwhile, here;s a small quick checklist:-

Meanwhile, remember to choose the right gear, that keeps the engine in 2500-4500 rpm, for maximum mileage.
Also, ensure that wheels are free to move and not jammed at the wheel joint, brakes, etc.
Ensure that on starting, at idle rpm, the rpm doesn't sway up and down on its own, without touching throttle, (If so, it might be running lean, as describer above),
Ensure that the clutch plates are still usable. While riding, give sudden twist to the throttle and let it stay. If you feel like its picking up rpms, without picking up speed when in gear, then clutch plates might require a change to get optimal mileage,

thank you for valuable message it will surely improve my run in procedure..
Now talking about engine rebuild cost , it contains many other things and fixes as well because of poor care taken by previous owner . i am attaching Photos of bills and there is also some other parts replaced like speedmeter sensor cable etc.

hello i want to add one new update .
now my bike has completed 350kms after engine rebuild. sadly i am getting mileage of only 30-35km/l .i have never crossed 55+km/h and in tearms of performance i want to say that i am not feeling much difference like i feel like bike is giving little jerks when i am keeping throttle unchanged for sometime like at 4000RPM.and one more thing is engine is also becoming hot even after riding for 3-4 km.
also noticed that initially when i start bike the ideal RPM is 1100 but after riding it will be like 1500RPM.
i am really disappointed much more tensed because i have spend much more money .some one please help me

The charges and bill posted by you seem ok to me on first look. Maybe your engine was really in a bad shape so it required change of so many parts, how can I guess from here on the internet?

Carb tuning might be the trick. Are these jerks regular in nature or irregular?
See, unless we feel the bike ourselves, its difficult to guess. Can you post a video with good sound?
@psr @Divya Sharan @Old Fox Please try understanding what could be the problem.

This is normal. Your idle rpm can be 1400 rpm, and can go upto 2000 on being tuned properly.

Don't worry, We will try getting your bike back to normal.

                    Few things:
                    1. It has been 350 km already. Drain the engine oil.
                    2. Stop worrying about mileage until 1000 km. Carry out another oil change at 1000 km.
                    3. Idle RPM will stay a little high until the piston rings set.
                    4. Forget the 50 kmph funda. Stay under 4500 RPM (most of the time) till you hit 500 km. Then increase it to 5500 RPM for the next 500 km. Keep varying the RPMs. You may even go higher than the above said range for a few seconds once in a while. Don't ride the bike for more than 100 km at a stretch. Give it frequent breaks.
                    5. Do NOT touch the carburetor now. Let the run-in period get over (1000 km). Necessary adjustments can be made then.
                    6. Maintain proper tire pressures.
                    Got a $5 head? Get a $5 helmet.

From the Bill of Material it can be seen that a lot of work had gone in , in repairing your bike....The Bore along with Piston and rings, The timing chain with chain tensioner, Lathe work for same, Entire clutch assembly along with plates and bearing, Drive chain and Sprocket etc., are the some of the major parts changed. Since bore+ Piston and Clutch assembly had been changed, it will be sometime before you get good Fuel Efficiency. You have to ride the bike gently ie., no sudden acceleration and going over 5,000 RPM for long time.Keep varying the RPM , speed and gears...From your report of engine getting hot, it is obvious that it is still getting used to setting in. Variation in idling RPM can be abut 200 RPM...your's is high due to the fact that the bore and rings are just bedding in and takes upto 1,000 Kms. Use the recommended Oil and keep maintaining the bike with the ASC...In case you face any problem with any of the parts changed, you can always take it up with them.
                        Good Luck.

                          5. Do NOT touch the carburetor now. Let the run-in period get over (1000 km). Necessary adjustments can be made then.
                          6. Maintain proper tire pressures.

Yesterday morning, I went for the first service for bike as it has done 600 km after engine rebuild.i told them about noise and heating issues also about lower mileage. after 3-4 hours they called me and said that air screw in carburetor is jammed so you have to replace whole carb. And it will cost you about 2700rs!!! My concern is it necessary to replace whole carb?
