  • Ninja 650R Pulls to the Left

I'm riding a 2011 Ninja 650R. In December 2015, I had a low speed (20-25 km/h) crash during which the bike slipped in gravel and fell onto it's right side. Post crash, other than cosmetic damage, the bike was fine. There was no pulling to one side or any other such running issue.

Subsequently, I've had the RHS fairings, brake pedal and all 3 brake pads replaced. During that time, I noticed that when I let go of the handle bars, the bike pulls to the left. Also, when riding in a straight line at cruising speeds (> 45-50 km/h) I have to make the bike lean slightly to the right to ensure that the bike goes straight. I am ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that this is NOT because of banked roads.

In my pursuit of trying to fix this issue, I've had new tyres fitted and experimented with all sorts of tyre pressures. The forks seem to be straight and otherwise un-damaged. Any suggestions or ideas on what might be causing my current predicament will be much appreciated.

How much has your bike completed? It is possible that the coneset needs replacement or needs to be adjusted. apart from that, the only possible thing is the front wheel bearing needs replacement and the axle needs to be lubed.

All the above only in case the fork isn't bent..

Th problem could be because of coneset does it wobble or just pulls to side ?

wrapped rotors or sticky brake pads ? loose swing arm ?
I know you mentioned tire change, but is the rear tire properly aligned? This is easy to check, I believe, there are markers on either side.

            No wobble, just a pull.

The bike has done roughly 24k kms. The forks are definitely not bent. Could this be a case of different oil levels between the 2 forks?

Not too much of an effect.. but possible.. I would recommend you to check the cone set

I don't see how the brakes could cause the pulling. Even if one of the front brakes is dragging, there's only one point of contact. This could cause problems in cars where there are multiple points of contact.

Rear wheel alignment seems to be in order.

The forks in most cases are not bent.. some mechanics due to a lack of knowledge simply say 'saar fork bend'.
It is probably the 'cone-set' (local term for the steering stem race and bearings)
You could first try to get it tightened a wee bit. If not a replacement should suffice.
One other thing is alignment of the forks/wheels. Make sure the front and rear are in a straight line and that the handlebar is pointing straight relative to the wheel.

Here is a video I came across on replacing the 'cone-set' on a n650 (the er6n)

And for minor 'reset' of the fork alignment:

If you have warped rotor, then every time you hit the brake you will feel a shudder in the handlebar and it becomes impossible to hold the front brake for more than 2 seconds.

was the oil ever changed in one or both forks?
it's mostly like you will need a minor tightening of the steering stem nut or worse case a cone set replacement.
as another user pointed out, get the front wheel checked for a bad bearing.. it's unlikely for it go bad in 24k under normal use.

Something that skipped my mind earlier, a worn/old (3 +years) front tire could also cause that minor pulling.

My tyres are brand-spanking new. During replacement of the tyres, the bearings looked fine. Oil in the forks, I'll have to check that. I did however notice this - when my bike standing straight with the handlebars pointing the tyre forward, the forks seem to be angling to the right. They look parallel to each other, but angled to the right... Does this mean bent forks? I did not notice any stress marks along the either fork. What does the issue of angled forks point to?

forks are usually not that flimsy they deform easily. refer the second video i mentioned, you could probably loosen the pinch bolts and set it back to normal and tighten them.
can't comment further without actually taking a look/riding the bike. but very unlikely a bent fork.
since you mention new tires, how much have the new tires run? usually the initial few km might feel 'awkward' on certain tire/bike combinations (especially the front).

I had the same issue on my old tyres, which is why I had them changed out. So I'm pretty sure that the problem is unrelated to the tyres.

With regard to the 2nd video, his problem is that the bars and front tyre don't point the same direction. I don't seem to have that issue.

Also, is there any explanation for why I'm having to lean slightly to the right to make the bike go straight at decent speeds?

I am not an expert but you may try removing and refitting front brake calliper bolts.

                            Hi,
I already wrote about the cone sets but here's the things you can check.
                            • Fork itself is it straight as mentioned above ?
                            • The tires itself - have they been fitted properly , all tires have a yellow/ blue dots they should be aligned with air valve ?
                            • The bearings inside wheels .
                            • Wheel Balancing and alignment - Sometimes this could be an issue

Might wanna check few international threads too somebody would have had same issue.
                            Regards,
                            Mohan
