  • Performance vs KMpl

Hi, this is my first thread and I have a noob question for you guys.
I own a Honda CBF Stunner 125, and I've done less than 3000 kms on it. While getting my bike serviced a couple of months back, I complained that the bike was only giving me ~40 kmpl. After that, it increased by 10-15%. Recently, one of my friends said that i was over-revving the engine and that was the probably the reason for low milage. I took his advice and started shifting up earlier than I used to. This bike doesn't have an rpm meter so I cant give the exact numbers. The milage further increased by 10% to ~50 kmpl.
Now, though I'm happy with the milage, I'm not quite satisfied with the bikes "power"(not sure if thats the correct tech term). What I mean is that in the top gear just when the speedometer needle crosses 50 kmph, the engine starts vibrating like its under a lot of stress. I'm quite sure theres something wrong. I shouldn't have to over-rev the engine just to cross 50 kmph, right? Even mopeds like Activa go faster than that!
Is it possible that the service center guys did some kind of tuning to increase the milage which adversely affected the performance of the bike?

ya ur right.........i have also experienced that...but you should keep in mind that itz a 125cc...so donot expect a rocket power....weell jokes apart..i don't know but i have experienced that in all honda bykes.....

i rode honda shine before..,...if u see the shine and cbf stunner has the same specifications.....

when crossing 60 it vibrates so much as if it doesn't want to go beyond that.....while riding at alower speeds it was comfortable.......

but this is not the case with hh and bajaj...they easily cross 60 without vibrations......

even my late 115cc calliber go beyond 60 withouit any hesitations.....at 80...it starts to vibrate.....

I understand that its just a 125cc bike. But its really embarassing when my bike finds it difficult to keep up with a girl on a Activa! Doesn't it have a 100cc Honda engine too?

              Hey saurabh,

I wouldn't be able to say anything specifically w.r.t the Honda Stunner but then the symptom that you are talking of i.e. that of over-revving relative to earlier happens with a leaner mixture if it is the carburettor setting that is at fault. Also this could be a result of worn out clutch plates. But then the possibility of a faulty carburettor setting looks more likely as you had mentioned the mileage thing to the service center guys & like you pointed out they might have fiddled with the settings.

I can say this from personal experience when I did rejetting in my bike, which used to feel stressed even at speeds close to 50-60kmph with a lean setting but the throttle response & even the feel improved a lot with a richer (relative to the stock) setting. The reason I had to rejet my bike was because of a free flow exhaust that I had installed on the bike.

And hey, there can a whole lot of other reasons that can be responsible for this, but then according to me, these two are the most likely of them all.

              Take care.

              Happy & safe riding,

Thanks for the response guys. I just wanted to know if my bikes behaviour was normal or not. I'll make sure I point this out the next time I get my bike serviced. I really don't mind 45kmpl if my bike can atleast comfortably run @60kmph

The Shine is among the smoothest bikes in India and has lot less vibes than most other bikes. It is a Honda... There are very few bikes in India that you wouldn't notice until it passes you. Shine is among them.

But then the Shine feels stressed beyond 70KMPH (it is very short geared) and that is where the 5th gear in the Stunner comes to rescue. If your bike has vibes, please get it checked. It shouldn't have serious vibes (I didn't try a Stunner yet but comment based on the fact that Stuner has the same engine & chassis of Shine).

Today at 2 PM 3 morons on a Shine were trying to chase me on an R15 in traffic at speeds over 70 KMPH and though I didn't give them a chance until I had to take a turn I had them coming parallel many times and there's hardly any sound that comes out of the bike... I can know when a passion plus passes me but not a Uni or a Shine.

@saurabh.agrawal: Do get your bike checked at a SC... The bike shouldn feel stressed at 50... And vibes also should be minimal or none what so ever... I think as far as i have heard and i could be wrong the stunner should be able to 70-75 without any vibes... And above that there should be minimal vibes... Most new 125 and 135cc bikes coming in now have good refined engines and chassis and have cut down cosiderably on vibrations in the bike which was usually a problem with the predecesors...

                          First two corrections.
1.> Activa is a Scooter not a moped.
                          2.> Stunner has a 125CC and not a 100cc Honda Engine

                          Now coming to your question.
Your statement suggests that now you are changing the gears in the right manner. How old is your bike??? and how did you ride it in the first 1000Kms?
One of my friends has a Stunner and i've ridden it quite a bit as well. And in no way i relaised that it is struggling to go past 60 or 70kmph speed. It was really smooth. Not in the league of Unicorn but close to that.

Get your carb settings checked also check the Engine oil. Apart from that you can ask the service center guyz to check the timing chain, tappets, valve clearance. I don't think that the clutch plates are gone. Stunner is quite a new bike and Honda parts never fade off so easily.

thtz rightly said....these honda engines r ultra smooth ....but only in higher speeds they start to struggle as u said....
