  • Pulsar 150 to 220 - engine upgrade

    hi,
    I intend to get my engine upgraded to a 220 engine from my current 150cc UG2... its not a straight fit though... alterations are there...

    as per my mechanic, i need to change:
    1. piston+bore
    2. gearbox(ratio)
    3. clutches
    4. Suspension adjustment
    5. manifold(no idea here)
    6. crankshaft
    7. 29mm carbuerettor
    (he mentioned some more too, i dont remember)

    please enlighten me in this context... i dont want to look a complete fool in front of my mechanic...

    i was quoted a price of 22k... is it worth?

        yeah, that is correct, but an fi engine, directly installing it, cannot be tuned (it is preprogrammed) as per needs but a carbuerettor helps to do whatever you want. i'm also retaining the engine case... (as far as i know, the only big alteration would be for the crank) I would also not get the oil cooling(according to me, it is just a bajaj gizmo!)

            not worth 22k.you will neither get the same performance nor get the handling and looks.buy a new or a second hand 220.

                why not resell the damn thing.

                Will you will need the RC to be changed and all? - this is easier to resell for a used 220?

                  You can think of 150 to 180 (Think only)
                  but 150 to 220 is complete....

                      my current situation of the bike is really pathetic... i cant even sell it... wierd noises are being produced from the engine... i clearly burnt something in there i suppose... for the past month i've been doin in the range of 30-40kmph...
                      i already hav to spend around 12-15k if i need to get it back in condition and i tot another 10 more for the 220... so y not a chance..??

                      not required

                      i test rode a 150 classic modded to a 220 today and a stock 220 can never come close to it....

                      this mod was without any performance airfilter or a custom exhaust, both of which i have.. moreover close 75kays at 5k rpm with a 140rear tyre(fz 16 alloy+tyre) and a 120 upfront.!

                        ha!..

                        thats what am talkin about....its VFM man!....
                        i have a p-180 to a p-200 and p-180 cross(if i may say) coz i have better torque figures than a 200. got a 200 block piston and the 180's head mated. just had a small glitch of the cam tension chain. its all sorted, completed 2.5k, insane mid-range, i beat a 220/zma/R-15 successfully at 0-60( with the 44t 180 ug3 stock set up) now gettin the 200's chain sprcoket set, wanna see the top end now(hopin to easily cross the 130 mark, the bike happily redlines above 10k RPM!!....

                        undefine name, dude u will take it a step further...some leap there mate. even i was plannin to do a 180-220 thing. But the hassles that i cam up with were
                        1. fittin the bore piston kit(although it was around 3k for a 220's bore piston, fittin it inside the frame was a trouble)
                        2. gettin a FI on it( almost impossible for our mechs levels)
                        3. Engine coolin system is not a gizmo, trust me i am havin heating issues with the stock carb, so hopin that upjettin will cool my engine(200 also is loaded with a oil coolin unit, its not a gizmo
                        4. cam tension chain.( i have welded an extra piece of metal to mine)
                        crankshaft shudnt be a prob for u, coz u are buyin the whole block-piston and head set. plz dont experiment with the carb thing, you will have to upjet and trust me u will be maintaing nothin less than a sportsbike, so bye-bye touring.

                        22k is HUGE he is robbing u. i got the whole thing done in around 8k.
                        opening the engine and fittin is nothing more than 1.5k even in pro-biking. All the parts will be bought by u.

                        block piston+ head+head packin+cam tension packin====around 4.5k(max)

                        chain sprcket set(gear ratio)== 850
                        clutch plates(i havent changed them, not really required. sprcoketing should give u taller gears)=== 1200-1500
                        a new carb(p-200)===2.5k==29mm mikuni
                        so even if u give the mech another 2k coz you are very happy and u have a lot of money.....it comes nothin more than 12k yaar!...ask for an estimate.

                        dont show that u are willin to put in any amt of money, once they see u have money to spare they will become money suckers. my mech is now nt solvin the oil leak prob that am having, he is givin me fcukall reasons so am gettin it done from somewhere else. Know every mod or change thats happenin in ur bike, know every part of the engine, otherwise u r bound to be fleeced. A teenager can do it(roadside mechs) , so can u.

                        i did it so that i dont get robbed.
                        anyq's jus PM.

                          yup.... VFM!.. there u go... ROFL!

                          and yes... this was wat i did... i asked for an estimate from bajaj spares outlet itself... the overall while considering the engine part comes to 12k...the bajaj guy quoted a 4.5k for the 220 bore+piston and 4k for the 29mm carb here in chennai...???

                          he's willing to do it for 18k

                          this mechanic of mine had also wanted to go in for a new set of suspensions( tat is the main cause of the price increase) is tat really necessary?

                          by sprocket do u mean the one which is with the rear tyre?

                          the 22k included some more work, correcting my wiring, cone set replacement, swing arm alignment, the classic pulsar headlight assembly, which hes come to 18k now

                          and where was this oil leak problem for ur bike... the 220mod i rode today also had an oil leak from the head(near the tappet adjustment bolts) and oil was spurred all over the carb...

                          and by saying dont play with the carb...??? i dont get u there...

                            I agree, cas after 1 year on the 220 i am looking for to upgrade it to a 500 cc engine... and guess what after that i may want to make it up to 1000 cc which is stupid and crazy. So stop it and dont do the engine mod... and even if you do remember that your body may not have that aerodynamics and stop power to ho;d that engine down under pressure (you may loose control)...

                            So dont buddy.. dont...

                              U can go for 220's suspension which will cost Rs 850 per one side and open chain cover.. U can change the swingarm to that of 220 for more stability.. I really appreciate ur modes..
