  • Maintenance for a used bike.

    Hi all,
This is my first post. I am purchasing an used Pulsar 200NS 2013 model(Around 25000kms) from someone i know.
I am completely new to bikes and don't know that much about maintenance. I have 2 questions:
    1. What all should I check before purchasing and how should I check?
    2. After purchasing the bike what is the maintenance routine i should follow?

Please explain both the questions in detail. It is highly appreciated.

I live in Ameerpet, Hyderabad. Any good trusted mechanic for 200NS within 7/8 kms?

Thanks for reading and your replies.

    Regards,
    Bharat.

(Edit 1: The owner gave the bike to Bajaj Authorized Service Center. They examined the bike.
The bike was kept aside for more than 7 months and wasn't touched. The svc guys said the carburetor has been damaged, battery and it's related components as well.
So, that calls for a replacement. He said it would cost around 8000 for all repairs, replacements.
My question is will i face any other problems as the bike wasn't touched for quite a while. As the battery was dead, i wasn't able to ride it.)

      Check for the following;

      1. Smoke while starting the motorcycle and at high revs.
      2. Oil stains on the spark plug and exhaust tip.
      3. Load test the battery.
      4. Timing chain/ cam noises while running both with and without load.
      5. Gear Slips.
      6. The rest of things like electrical's, mechanical's etc.

As for maintenance, download the digital copy of the NS manual from Bajaj's website and make sure to change all consumables as per recommended intervals.

Thanks for the reply. I will keep these in mind. But in 4th point, you said to check Timing. What timing do i need to check?

          Timing Chain;

Check if its within spec because if its out of spec then it would cost a couple of thousands for replacement.

            Thanks for the quick reply.
I have spoken to the mechanic at Bajaj ASC. He said the carburetor, battery, battery related components needs to be replaced. And there is some problem with engine. It needs engine overhaul and replacements for the above mentioned components. The owner lives far from my place and had given the bike to a ASC near his home. I spoke to the mechanic over the phone. All i could make out were the replacement and engine having problem which may has been caused due to coolant/cooling motor/some thing else issue.
            List of current Issues:
            1. head bore,
            2. connecting rod,
            3. head patching,
            4. coolant leaking onto pistons and getting mixed with engine oil,
            5. carburetor replacement
            6. battery & its related components replacement,
            7. water pump/coolant pump or motor replacement
            8. self motor replacement is also a possibility.

How much would it cost to get all the above mentioned to be done at Bajaj ASV itself? Is it advisable doing this?

            Thanks.

That is way too much replacement for a motorcycle that has done only 25k km's, are you sure the SVC is not taking you for a ride?

I would suggest you pull your pants up and do your own observation and start working on the motorcycle by yourself rather than depend on a mechanic i.e unless you have about 25~30k to spend on the overhaul.

                Hi Ashwin.
The svc guys gave an estimate of 18 to 20k.
Would it be ok if I give the bike to a mechanic outside svc knowing that the svc charges a lot for the labour hours btw how much do they charhe per hour? Will he be able to repair/replace whatever is required below 14/15k?

                Thanks.

Yes i think you should show the bike to an outside mechanic... Maybe the engine overhaul isn't needed... Only change of oil... But a good inspection would tell all you need to know

                    Thanks.

AFAIK they charge based on job done not hours, I doubt anywhere in India service is computed on the basis of man-hours.

Before even considering the need for a mechanic first you need to do a self diagnosis to determine whether there are any issues in the first place.

                    Start by changing all consumables;

                    1. Air Fitler.
                    2. Oil Filter and Oil.
                    3. Spark Plugs.
                    4. Coolant, if coolant is already mixing with Engine Oil then change the seal's at the coolant Pump, not that expensive and difficult, if coolant level is still dropping then change the head gasket and while you're getting the head gasket changed have the valve clearances adjusted.

Once done ride the motorcycle and see if you're facing any issues or hearing any odd noises, if not after warm-up rev the motorcycle in neutral and look for smoke at exhaust, if nothing then the motorcycle is fine and you can keep riding as long as you change engine oil at 2k intervals.

                    Done!

The owner decided to give the bike to SVC itself. I got hold of the bill/invoice. And the bike has 30k on the odometer. Please take a look at the parts list on invoice and can anyone tell me what has been done to the engine, bike.

I don't even understand some parts name written there. Can someone tell what these are, why are these replaced?

                      Thanks in advance for reply.

To sum it up if the motor doesn't run flawlessly for another 50~75k km's you should catch the mechanic by the collar.

Also make sure to collect all the old parts, you could sell them on OLX and recover a good portion of the money spent on the overhaul.

I can read it as Rocker set, valve springs, valves, and camshaft. The biller has bunched several parts as 3.3k.

Oh it's nearly Rs.19K on bill ,how does the bike feels to ride now ?

And why didn't the chain sprockets and tyres aren't changed ??

Because the longer standstill might cause rusting and deterioration of wear and tear !!
