Two weeks back I got the ABS from Saferide ABS fitted on the rear disc of my Pulsar 220, and it has been working fine... I could see the difference clearly, the braking has become smooth, compared to earlier.

1) Do these after market ABS do their work? Are they good?
-- Working good as of my experience, but not tried on front disc, rear wheel skidding has been reduced to large extent...

2) Are they relaible? I mean how long do they last for? Any particular servicing required? If the servicing is very expensive then I'll have to rethink.
-- not sure though, but till now I didnot face any issues, and I don't think it might give any problems.
-- service costs are negligible as per the company, and they are offering 6 months replacement warranty for any defects in the unit.
-- initial installation will require/recommended to change the brake oil completely

3) I heard these systems weigh around 1.2-1.5Kg. Will this increase in weight affect the overall performance of the bike?
-- Weight is fine, did not effect to much extent... atleast for me!!!

4) Any other side effects of ABS on the entire machine?
-- as of now, only thing found is finding a good mechanic to get it fitted (I am happy because of Mahesh and Mari, who did a good job of fitting this, at Auto Service, Bangalore)

5) This may sound silly, but on which wheel does this device fit? I mean, we on R15 have 2 discs. So one which disc does this fit? Or on both?
-- I recommend fitting this only on the rear disc, it fits both the discs (not sure of R15 though)

6) Any good brand? I have heard of continental or something of that sort. Any other?
7) Ultimately, where in Mumbai can I get one? Sniper is one I know now, anywhere else?

Final verdict : even though you use ABS, the disc will get locked, the ABS will only increase the locking time, it depends on how you are using the brakes, recommened ratio of front to rear brakes is 70:30, and with disc brake on the rear, there is possibility of skidding while braking suddenly , and using ABS will only delay the time taken to start skidding

Wow, ABS this cheap? Awesome. It will be a huge boon for you 220 guys. I remember locking up the 220's rear wheels while riding with a pillion! Should do a lotta good. Why does it lock up on sudden braking? I dont know about bikes but on the SX4 with ABS On, the darned thing never locked up however hard I tried.

Ok, I just read up about the KRP product and now I know the difference b/w whats fitted in the SX4 and this one.

This is not true ABS guys. It is just a mechanical device which relieves the brake pressure to some extent thereby delaying wheel lockups. It does not take wheel speed into considerations. True ABS uses speed sensors to determine if the wheels are slowing down too fast and modulates brake pressure accordingly. They are implemented using microchips. No wonder they actually do prevent lockups.

The KRP guys never replied me back over mail... but in terms of communication, saferideabs guys are better (though the price is some 350-400 rs. high), atleast they are available over mail instantly or over the phone....

I agree, this will only delay the lockup, but to some extent, is useful in emergency braking, as I have experienced this practically.

One bad (rather good for me) day, I almost went under the KSRTC bus, as the reluctant driver all of a sudden decided to take it to the extreme left lane from the divider, and I was in the middle lane, and had no other option to stop the bike, and I managed to balance the bike without slipping though the rear wheel skid for almost 1-1.5 mtrs.....

I thanked god for not letting me slip, and then I realised that if the tyre had not skid, it would have surely helped me in controlling the bike more efficiently, and this pulled me to look into the ABS module.

last wednesday, I was driving the bike on a raining evening (I was close to the destination, so I decided to continue, even though I was wet), and the citi bus driver suddenly applied brakes as some other vehicle stopped in front of him, but the bike got controlled very smoothly and there was no locking up of the wheel at all.

Thanx for that point by point reply to my query. Well one question here.. You said you have fitted the device to only the rear disc. And cost mentioned is Rs.650/-. So in 650 we get only one device or Rs.650 include devices for both the discs?

On Sniper automotive web site, in the advantages of ABS list they have mentioned that it also reduces the braking/stopping distance. Any light on this? Have you noticed anything of this? Does it really reduce the braking distance?

How was the stability of the bike after the installation?

Was installing that device a complex job or was it easy? How much were the installtion charges?

Anybody from Amchi Mumbai with ABS installed on their machines?

I got it for slightly higher price (1050/- including shipping), but I paid the amount because of the kind of support they were offering, and the installation cost me around 100/- including the brake oil change.

1050/- is for only one disc, but I don't think its required on the front disc, especially if we have it installed on a rear disc.

as far as Braking distance is concerned, there is no much difference in the distance, but the braking is smooth, and practically there is only 5-10% difference in the distance the bike stops... This could be the drivers perception, but the bike did stop very smooth even in cases of emergency braking, most of the times.

as of stability, I did not see any difference/abnormalities in other terms, except for smooth braking of the rear wheel, without skidding

installation took almost 1 hour to complete, as removing the air gaps from the caliper was the toughest job done.... Also, the EATA guys did send me the compatible connectors along with the shipment, and the main connectors were not compatible, I had to use the alternate connectors.
Make sure you mention the bike model before ordering.

Better look out for KRP, if you can get them contacted back, it would be good, as they did not respond, for me atleast.

How was the performance on wet road conditions? Because my major reason for buying this stuff is the wet road conditions. I have done/do lot of touring and by god's grace never had any problem of tyre locking or skidding yet(at least nothing that major) but what I am worried bout is touring in monsoon.

So shed some light on Wet road condition performance and I am all set to go for it.

Once again.. anyone from Mumbai with ABS fitted? Any dealer/shop from Mumbai where I can get it fitted?

Again, I would emphasize that, these ABS kit will only delay the locking up of the wheel, you need to be still careful , whether its a dry/wet road....
These can help to increase the time to start skidding, will *NOT* completely avoid skidding.

My conclusion after getting this running for almost ~3 weeks is that, ABS is not required on the front brakes, and its definitely very useful addon for the rear disc, especially in City traffic.

Guys please know what's meant by ABS Anti-lock braking system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia before spending your money on these gimmicks. And, most of the differences felt are simply placebo effects.
