Hey guys.. thanks for al dat uve shared specially joel i agree wid d fact that nowadays ppl jus wanna tune or customize their bikes facially without any knowledge..
Its jus dat m willin to explore this agenda abt tuning.. i really thank u guys for ur suggestions.. i know its any day better to keep ur 1 cylinder bikes stock.. but jus that the adrenaline rush eats away your ability to control yourself from doin these things..
I am a lil under-knowledged that i believed such things.. Well but i am definitely not an ignorant so i came to u guys for help and inputs.. Wel i am also interested in the mechanics and the various aspects of engine performance and m pursuing my career in this field..
I need to get more practical and enrich the ideas and my thoughts and become a wiser man.. So i am glad this community helped me out..
and atul i totally understand ur point too.. its jus dat i felt that my bike had the potential and i have to somehow bring it out.. so i really needed help from u guys..
Wel so now i believe i was spending 3 to 4 grand for nothing.. But if u cud help me understand the concepts of tuning and upgrading.. Id really appreciate that.. thank u guys!!

s/w guy : There is a method in which you can route the exhaust gas into the engine directly and you will get twice the power easily. (bugger was refering to a turbo).
I could not control myself and burst loud. I simply walked away from there.

so true people know BS about tuning poor sods played too much of NFS !
i suggest a puny little single cylinder engine is better left untouched .
enjoy the 17 horses while you can and a bigger bike is anyday better than a unreliable tuned bike .
KnN filter comes nowhere close to real tuning
increasing power output from an engine is relatively easy but making it street-able and reliable is another thing .
as for spark plugs and spitfire cables
you will just be wasting one grand .

Joel
I mean the subset of xBHPians (like Joel and Atul), who do have a substantial knowledge !!
Anyways, I'll shut up now. Coz my post didn't nearly have the same effect as I intended it to have !!

you can go for iridium plugs and kn filter ... change the main jet in the carb with a plus size .. this will certainly give you some good mid range ... apart from this when your sprocket change is due decide on the factor if you want a higher top end or more initial pickup.. if you change the number of teeths in sprocket in rear.. you wll see the change.. these mods are enough if you dont wanna touch the engine ... all these mods does make difference when done correctly and the engine remains in good shape as well..Originally posted by jeetphenom View PostHello guys.. i am a new member to this excellent biking online community.. I have a karizma 08.. now there is no doubt that i love this bike's performance and i daily use it for around 30 kms.. Now i feel the urge to compete with better bikes being launched in india having better power and performance aspects.. I know karizma has been dominating since the past 6 yrs but now i want the era to continue.. i am lookin forward for upgrading my bike's power from 17 to atleast 23 or 25 bhp.. i checked out from the local customization shops in bangalore..
they asked me to get the following installed:
1)Iridium spark plugs
2)they said some rear power cable(it gets the iginition rate 10 times higher although this seemed somethin interesting)
3)a k&n filter model rc1100.
however i don wanna bore d engine when ive jus hit 8000 kms on the odo..
kindly suggest me some options and if u think the above features will help my bikes power output..

Gone through the whole thread
I am a newbie dont know much about engine mods , before being in here I too wanted to do a lot of cosmetic mods for my bike after going through all the advices and suggestions by senior members I got to know that there is a reason why the bike is designed the way it is by the engineers and designers and its foolish running behind and spending hard earn money behind these stuffs that doesnt give anything to your bike.
all being said, written and read I found this place the most helpful and any knowledge I could gain is from here and not from any other place.
I request all the newbies in here to read through the universal threads and other threads from the senior members get at least some basic knowledge before posting there queries.
A request to senior members to guide us(newbies) advice and tolerate us even though we sound foolish and ask you people useless and pointless questions ..
Thanks to all for your support...

Exactly, dude. People just don't seem to know what they are talking about. At most they just throw some terms around and feel they know it all. As for me, I am not any sort of expert in engines, but I do know enough to appreciate what others are doing with their engines and also to realize when someone just claims to produce significant improvements seemingly from thin air.Originally posted by Joel View PostIf only they could experience 1% of the effort that went into the build, they'll get a clue of what tuning is.
At OP - dude it is not possible to increase power "from 17 to atleast 23 or 25 bhp" just by using K&N filters and iridium spark plugs. Heck, these mods are not even known to provide any noticeable bumps in power just by themselves without any other supporting engine mods like increasing cylinder compression and re-jetting the carb.

well i am the one of those who always ask u for ur ideologies and guidance joel sir
....... but err
the sad thing is that some people consider working on bike ' s engine as labour work
........
they say its a job of low class mechanics ..........
and all such talks
another problem being people think its not worth it
i ve heard people recommending ,,,,, instead of thinking of playing with ur engine and spending uselessly on researching is a bad business
wht if u fail
wht if u blow off!
give ur bike to a mech
he ll do the work!
i have seen people spending like mad guys for cosmetic modification but dont want to spend even 1 / 3 rd of it for engine work........
they dont want to pay the tuner for his research and hardwork and say things like " salla RS 1000 ki cheez pe mod job pe kam karne ke liye RS ** le raha hain!..... sirf item bike mein fit hi to karni hain !"....
they just can see how its easy to change a filter and jets,
still if given to them cant do it
,
but dont know what hell it takes to get a right combo of jetting for the setup..... heck if a amateur tuner has to research,,,,, only different types of carburettors cost...... some or most manage to get them from scrapyard or some other means like from friends rotting bike etc, its a different story
but it also costs somewhat.......and consumes valuable time!
and carbs are only a part of the story....... many more things to look into
now whats wrong if the tuner is expecting a reward for his piece of work?
one day definitely i hope things including MYSELF to improve

You are calling yourself a tuning guru eh?Originally posted by sukant08 View PostWe(I mean the tuning gurus) shud perhaps educate him
Tuning is not something that can be taught like a tutorial to someone. I hear most of them sending me mails and calling me and asking to teach them about tuning.
What is tuning? Its not about simply understanding how an engine/bike works etc. Tuning is a really vast subject of changing the character of a desired car/bike for the purpose desired. Its a process of increasing the volumetric efficiency of an engine and making the engine to work more for every drop of fuel thats burnt. When u increase the efficiency of the engine, power and economy both go up. For all-out racing set-ups, the demand is something else.
I've been fiddling with my engines for over 5-6 yrs now. Not some K&N and jetting, but hardcore stripping and rebuilding etc. I've been an engine nutter ever since childhood and when I was 15yrs old I stripped off my first engine. Its over 10 yrs now. I have learnt a lot more than what books could teach me over a theory note. Everyday I'm learning new things and my learning will stop only when my breath stops.
You need some mad levels of dedication to get there, else you can take the approach of merely understanding how your bike works....get to a level where you can service your own bike and leave it at that.
Everybody wants to start tuning their bike, there is nothing wrong but do people know what it takes?
I hear people saying that they are bikers. hardcore bikers. Whats being a biker? Xbhp says bikerism is a religion!. I dont see an essence here.
All cant be technically sound, most are challenged and the others are in between. Most feel tuning an engine is a simple task. Big deal, make everything bigger or larger and voila you have a fast engine.
Its more to do with the awareness around.
Now we have guys on the forum talking about adding a K&N and what not. I see people spend a good amount buying stuffs which dont give any damn increment in performance, but when there is the actual deal of laying hands on the engine to really soup matters inside...they decline. Like the thread starter who wants to get over 5 bhp without pretty much touching the engine. We having built a karizma to next levels, know what it takes to get even 2 bhp more. After having flown some over 40k and countless man-hours and testing is when we got that 5-6bhp. There is still a lot lot more to be done on the same engine, but thats for the next levels after that.
To everybody who is outside xbhp, it seems like this is a bunch filled with poser bikers. No offence but simply put thats how it is. I'm a part of other forums and I indeed know what repute each forum carries.
There are more discussion about filters, rims, plug wires and so on which can kill one to death. Having been a member since 2004, the quality of the members have changed. Good or bad, i cant comment.
I remember on my Fiero thread, someone asked me, if I have done stuff like jetting and K&N on my drag Fiero. I was simply floored. I didnt know what to say. After having written for over 2 pages(with pictures) about my set-up, I got such a question. Well, I didnt have the stock carb to begin with and nor was I even running a filter. I also see a few of them ridicule out of their ignorance for the wrong reasons and feel they are smart. If only they could experience 1% of the effort that went into the build, they'll get a clue of what tuning is.

It all boils down to how much people here educate themselves about their beloved motorcycles..The only popular trend i see is people blabbering and calling their bikes "babes", baby, girlfrnd et al which sounds totally gay...and yet they cant tell where a carburetor is..they can name their bikes, put some fancy bulbs, a sticker with some cheesy punchline and call themselves bikers...such is the sad state of affairs of motorcycling here and our indian junta want companies coming up with 250cc bikes..sad scene i tell you

cheersI agree with u atul_astro... It surely is a sad scene... To be honest before coming to xbhp i would say i was nothin more than a poser myself... Why?? As u said correctly half baked knowledge... Thinking that a K&N would give me some extreme power... Thinking that i was a biker without knowing how my bike works in the first place... Only after i came into this site did i start to learn more about my bike... N now when i do understand about the bikes working i have realized my stupidity in the past... Totally agree with wat u say...ok first off, this post wasn't directed at the thread starter..its directed at the whole sad state of affairs in the indian tuning scene where people do not want to educate themselves about their bikes and the basic function, and take half baked knowledge and talk about a 4 bhp increment with iridium plugs and a jaundice yellow spark plug cable.

me or joel have never claimed to be tuning gurus, nor we ever will...the real baaps of tuning dont even come on forums and chitchat like this..we're just a bunch of enthusiasts who prefer to keep things simple but, to the point though..And by we, did you mean yourself included?

But Atul and Joel :
At least this guy came to the right place. He probably knows that he is new to tuning and at least he is forthright about it.
And that at least is the start of the solution !! We(I mean the tuning gurus) shud perhaps educate him properly and then leave the decision to him!
cheers.
