  • '06 unicorn mis-firing above 8k

guys,my unicorn is modified with a k&n filter and a bigger jet in the carb. Also have iridium spark plug and a free flow exhaust..got a timing advance setup done by castrol bike zone guys..i have been having the problem of my bike misfiring once or twice when i go above 8k and then proceeds smoothly..this problem was more pronounced when i hadn't got the jetting done..now even after the air-fuel mixture was adjusted, i face it..the bike jerks once or twice above 8k and then is fine..help me out..

What the heck four stroke engine timing can be advanced by how many degrees clockwise ''

Your bike is running lean you need to upjet to a bigger main jet, richening the fuel mixture will not help.

bro, unicorns do not have iridium plugs...which one r u using..
and how have u put the filter??directly to the carb or inside the filter box?

@#$^ bike zone and take it to an experienced honda mech and tell him wat u have done and he'll figure out cause i have seen that since the bike is here since almost 4~5 years with the same engine the old mechs have become experts on the stock engine(atleast in hyd)...

Timing advance? Lolz! Is it running on points?

Yeah, you need to upjet further. K&N is not a plug and play item! And you have got a free flow exhaust too! Great way to mess up the bike!

I already have a 125 jet fitted..the stock is a 115..how much more shud i get..why all the weird expressions regarding the timing advance??
fitted the k&n directly on the carb..i purchased the spark plug from the krp guys..

Read the spark plug and see. You will know if you need to upjet further. Ride at around 8k rpm for a km and stop the bike and do a plug reading.

And regarding timing advance, all CDI bikes in India have non adjustable ignition timings.

my mistake, shud have a been a little clearer..actually it wasn't timing advance, it was mixture tuning that the mechanic did.. he put an odometer near the engine and opened up the air screw till no further rise in rpm..then he did a few other things i don't remember..

he told me that timing can be advanced by some tweaking around the magnet of the alternator but for unicorn, the tweaking wudnt make much of a difference so he didn't do it..
wat actually shud i read on the spark plug???
                  it's a product of a company called Hodaka..think it's a taiwanese company..

Also wud the higher lift camshafts from the cbz xtreme fit on the unicorn?

That would be a tachometer, not an odometer.

Well, how about putting back the original spark plug and testing?

And, to read spark plug, here you go - article, video

You will only get marginal improve in the midrange, the cams are almost same but the extremes cams are high profiled than uni's, so it gives a marginal improvemnt in midrange.

well thanks for the help..just another query..if i go for changing the cams, wat all else wud have to be changed. Any idea regarding the costs incurred
Also wud the air fuel mixture have to be readjusted so as to suit the new cams??any harm to the engine they might bring in the near future??

If fitted properly then there would be no problem whatsoever, else you are in a soup ..
