[Help]: Is using engine kill switch harmful?
Collapse

guys I am pressing my brakes, then dump the clutch to off my bike for past 1 year without using engine kill switch. Will it damage the bike??As till now I didnt face any problem.
-
With my (limited) knowledge, I would say -
Engine kill switch does not harm bike's engine but can drain battery based on how long ignition remains on.
If battery drains out or becomes weak, bikes having no kick start, won't fire up.
As someone just said, use it wisely only at traffic lights.
For chit-chatting, parking etc better use engine-kill-switch followed by ignition key.
But, I did not get "emergency usage" of engine kill switch.
Let's say, a fall is imminent & one kills its engine using switch.
Considering one is riding his bike say at 30 kmph on some gear; won't it be bad for transmission if one does not use bike's clutch as bike is still in gear & in motion???
Won't it jerk just the way it does when we leave leave clutch without giving acceleration???
If so, I feel it is more dangerous than letting engine be On only.

Guys I've stopped using the switch ... why ? let me tell you why , it has costed me to fix it up , count is twice now ... 1st time i believe the contacts got loosened due to excessive usage which it shorted the electricals
so the bike refused to fire up by any means .... push start also didn't work . , This was what the SVC told me ... charged me 585bucks for transportation and fixing it... 500rs was for the transportation ... the distance 3km .
Second time ...
not the switch's fault but still . it seems water got in to that module and again fried my electricals ... same problem but a mech fixed it for 50bucks ...

Thanks mate thank you very muchOriginally posted by princesirohi View Postthere is absolutely no harm in using engine kill switch at traffic lights or as frequently as you desire....i m using it from last 4 years to turn off the bike every time....i only use engine kill switch.
what is the actual purpose of engine kill switch?
let me answer it....why do you think some cars come with engine start switch, while same can be done with key also, the answer is ---- Convinience, and
- To save time.
and these are the exact reasons for giving engine kill switch. it comes in handy specially at traffic lights as your bike does not have to go through self check mode and it is handy too...u do not have to move your hand from handle bar.
it is a complete myth that it can harm your bike in any way or it is meant to be operated only in case of accident. it is also a myth that it can drain battery because your battery will be drained only if you left the ignition on for several days or weeks.

Whoa! I use it infinitely! I mean whenever or wherever I stop my bike first I use the engine kill switch then turn it off with the ignition. And before starting the bike when the self check completes then I turn the ON the kill switch and then drive the bike.
So is it aite ?

If the switch is not to be used frequently, then the manufacturers would have given it below the saddle
The main purpose of giving it near your thumb-reach is to use it often in stop-go traffic. IMHO it will NOT cause any harm to the engine.

Excellent point! Why would they do that?Originally posted by Binoy View PostWhat foolishness The Engine Kill switch will damage the engine???
Then why do the manufactures put such a feature on the bike if it really harms the engine...
For sure the engine itself is not affected/damaged whether you use the kill switch or turn off the ignition key.
In effect, as far as I know, they both kill the engine in the same way, by grounding the ignition to kill the spark. The difference is that the rest of the electrical system is still powered (lights, horn, injection pump, etc) when using the kill switch to stop the engine.
Only thing of course is that if all the lights are still on and the engine isn't running then the battery is being drained and not recharged. But overall I'd say that the electric starter motor is more likely to drain the battery if you use it every time the lights go green.
Kill switches do fail quite a bit, at least mine have done, but it's always been down to dirt, or corrosion of the contacts, inside the switch. With care and a bit of sandpaper they can be easily cleaned.

1) (Sarcasm) If you use it frequently, it might break and get stuck in OFF mode.Originally posted by wingrider744 View PostMost of us always use the engine kill switch to switch off the engine rather than by turning the key. Is there any difference between swithing off by Engine kill or by Key?
I have read in the p180 owners manual that "The engine kill switch is for emergency use only. Move the switch to off position in case of emergency."
What do you have to say??
That shows Bajaj's trust in their switch gears
2) Switching of with igni. key switches off every thing, but Engine kill switch switches off just the engine, not the electricals eg, brake lights, horn, indicators and in case of FI, DC bikes , fuel pump, H/L, pilot lamps etc
So at signals use it w/o any worries.
but when chatting with a long lost friend who just met you in parking lot, use ignition key.
