  • Noise from Pulsar 150's Engine - Need Suggestion

    Hi Members,

Yesterday I got my 70,000+kms run Bajaj Pulsar 150 DTS-i UG-2's (Spoke Wheel) engine overhauled.

The mechanic opened the engine and got the following parts replaced:
    1. Timing Chain
    2. Tensioner
    3. Clutch Plates + Steel Plates
    4. Clutch Plate Cover (Round cover with grooves in it)
    5. Both Valve
    6. Piston Rings

I also got clutch wire replaced as suggested by mechanic.

However after assembling the engine and putting Castrol Active engine oil, the response which I got was nothing great to talk about. Changing clutch plate gave good pickup, and new piston rings got me rid of smoke from exhaust at high rpm, but it was not worth the money I spend getting these things into their place. Including service charge at authorized service centre I paid something around Rs. 2600.

The problem which I realized today was when the engine was accelerated, in between 5000-6000RPM the engine would make a loud noise. Accelerating further would decrease the noise but the RPM meter would fluctuate and shomehow reach 10000RPM.

I'm unable to understand what this loud noise is all about. The mechanic tried to fool me by saying that the noise is coming from the body, and that I'll have to shed another Rs.1000/- to fix various components in the body, but the noise is like a large truck's at full throttle. Also the engine has prominent vibrations even at 4500RPM.

I certainly want to get rid of all these problems. I'm pissed over the mechanic, and I've already exceeded my budger for maintenance this month. Still I want this noise to be over without me costing much.

Please suggest what could be causing this loud noise.

    Thanks

Obviously you need to get your bike inspected by someone other than the people at the authorised service centre, and did you follow the run-in procedure after the new parts were installed? With every new set of piston rings run in procedure has to be followed.

I have not known the run-in procedure. Please let me know the correct process/steps to be followed after engine repair.

Today I went to few other mechanics for their suggestions. Most of them think its a sound coming from the engine, as while running on street if the bike is accelerated to 6000RPM or higher with clutch pressed in 5th gear, the petrol tank and foot pedals vibrate excessively which of course didn't happen before the engine job.

I'm fed up with my problems of not having a good mechanic to even carry out a relatively easy job properly.

I am also having the engine problem in P150 from when i bought my bike. Its 2005 make done 18000 kms. When i do a cold start, the sound doesnt come, but when the engine heats up, the noise is coming. Till now, I have'nt done any engine work in my bike.
What could be the problem, kindly help.

It would be practically impossible to diagnose the issue without checking it personally. Check for the following though
              1. check if the noise comes on even when the bike is revved in neutral and at the same RPM
              2. check if the noise is accompanied by vibrations even if you pull the clutch at the same speed.
              3. check engine mounts

Additionally, check if parts like center stand, side stand, fuel tank and side covers are properly fitted.
Never argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and then beat you with experience.

Buddy, where is the noise coming from.?? and what kind of noise it is..??

Like My bike is making smal sounds of Click - Click or sort if a polythne is stuck some where in the engine..
Finally figured out that inspite of getting the Tappets fixed, they were still making noise and the timing chain went now!!

Where are u located and did u get the job done at a authorized Bajaj Service Center? If yes then u have full right to have it fixed to your satisfaction. Didnt you check the bike before taking delivery? If no then there is less that can be done. The sound you seem to be talking about seems to be of the balancer gear as u mentioned in your post. Have it checked by a competent mechs. Also inspec the foundation bolts, a friend had a similar exp wherein the foundation bolts were missing.

i suggest to readjust your gear shaft..
same problem i faced when the gear shaft of my bike was replaced..
after, i took to same mechanic and he readjusted shaft(as he told me).
and the vibrations were gone in my P150 classic

IMHO very difficult to assess by just reading your post.Upload a video of your engine revving.

After riding the bike for over 1000km after the engine work, today after a picture perfect wash, I checked the noise from engine. To a large extent the noise was gone which was there in between 5-6k RPM.

I presume it was the run-in that the engine was looking for. However, at around 9000 RPM I noticed smoke coming from exhaust. This looked like a concern when I got new piston rings installed. Is it common to see smoke at higher RPMs?

Rest, for the moment I feel things are a bit on the better side with the engine.

                            The smoke looks white..

Tappet sounds more like a clipping sound, yeah I'm getting it too, will try tightening the Tappet on Sunday.

White smoke means engine is drinking oil.. allow the bike to run in for about 500kms and see..
