  • Purchasing(?) a used P220 DTSFi - Need advice

Someone I know in Pune, intends to purchase a used P220 DTSfi and has been offered a black one (mid-2007) model for 55K. He thinks the owner might just give it for say a couple of grands lesser than 55K as well, but then again that's not what he's thinking about so much.

The bike seems to be in a good condition (atleast visibly) -we haven't test-ridden it yet, gonna do that probably tomorrow or the day after- and the only negative thing that our mechanic could point about it was that the chain & sprocket need to be replaced. The battery's dead (no display in the LCD as well), but he thinks recharging it ought to do the trick. Most other stuff seems OK as far as he could tell.

Coming to the point, this mechanic (as well as a couple of others from the same garage) have advised us against purchasing a P220DTS-fi mainly due to its FuelInjected feature, which (according to them) is pretty naive and has a lot of flaws (he gets quite a lot of these bikes for repairs/servicing etc every week, I know that for sure). According to him, the FI system in the P220DTS-fi is actually a cheap implementation of FI and thus comes with a number of issues.

For instance he pointed out that the FuelInjection system in the P220 DTSfi doesn't perform consistently at all times, leading to the engine getting irregular amounts of fuel injected into it, causing it to -at times- run either too lean or too rich; rarely does it run at the perfect mixture of air and fuel. Besides -he says- this also causes irregular figures of FE to be recorded at times.

His honest verdict on the P220DTS-fi was that it should be avoided at best. Moreover, according to him, a P200 would be a better choice anyday over the P220DTS-fi (of course he says the P220DTSi is great too, but we were talking about used bikes there).

One of the other mechanics there even went so far as to say that the P180 UG3 was better than the P200 as well and given a choice he'd opt for the P180UG3 rather than the P200 or the P220DTS-fi.

Their comments landed us both into a conundrum of sorts since my friend was intending to sell off his P180UG3 and purchase the P220DTS-Fi.

Could someone out here please guide us as to
    a)
how much of the above points are indeed true/valid,
    b)
would it be a bad move to sell off the P180UG3 (which BTW is an April-08 model and in immaculate stock condition - black in color I might add) and go in for the mid-07 P220DTS-fi?,
    c)
    Is 55K a reasonable price for a mid-07 P220DTS-fi?
    d) Would a used P200 indeed be a more sensible choice than the P220DTS-fi?

Any comments/help would be much appreciated since my friend's hoping to close the deal soon.

      (a) I don't agree, that the FI 220 DTSfi is poor implementation of fuel injection. Because it was first for Baja, initial lot did have problems, which were ironed out as and when new parts were available. This included right from the starter coil to the RVMs. If i'm not wrong this bike has 5 year engine and 3 year normal warranty.

      (b) Depends on your purpose. I had bought my P180UG3, when I could have bought a 220 or at least 200, the reason being the realibelity issues with the initial batch of 220 and 200s. In my opinion, stick to 180 unless there's a serious problem with the bike,

      (c) Price seems to be ok, but how much on odo?

      (d) Doesn't make sense. Both shared lot of techs. FI was supposed to be the most reliable part in 220Fi!

Great! Thanks for those comments Rahul Devnath.
          * About the warranty, I am not sure if it would cover a used bike as well... I mean I've been told by people that all warranty is lost when the bike changes owners. Is that true?
          * Yes, the P180's not dishing out any problems at all, except for the chain and sprocket replacement need for itself (18K Kms on the Odo.) Guess keeping it would actually be a good thing to do.
          * So you're basically saying that the FI being the most reliable part of the 220, it is prudent to go in for a used 220 rather than a used 200... Hmm... now that's some stuff you've given me to think about.

P.S. Thanks Ken Cool for approving the help query.

              * Yes, the warranty is lost of ownership is changed, but that can be managed.. isn't it?

              * I chose P180 for a 11,000Km All India Expedition, over 200 or 220..

*220Fi would be better deal, after 2 years of usage among my friends, I find 200s to be more rattled than the 220s!

Yes, that's been at the back of my mind along too. But then, like I said, the battery was dead so we couldn't really get the LCD display up. I'll let you know about the readings once that gets fixed.

I could second that one. The P180 IS indeed a marvelous machine (I'm riding a UG3, and absolutely love it!)
Whoa, a 11,000Km expedition? Didn't know the P180 could manage that one now. Amazing! Managing a 11,000Kms is no small deal, neither for the bike nor its rider. Good going dude.

I've got a P200 in my garage too, and love that one as well. Haven't really ridden a P220 except in the showroom test-rides so can't say for sure what I feel about the two being compared with each other... But I think I'll take your word for it.

Hey BTW, how much of a price difference do you think there should be between a used P220 DTS-Fi and used P200?

P.S. This might sound naive: how does one 'manage' the warranty when the bike changes owners? Do you mean that the original owner claims all the warranties and gets everything fixed before the bike is sold, OR is there something else as well?

hmmmm. 55 k is too much. that too a bike at that condition. The average decent price should be 42 to to 45 max. because the chain set should cost something around 2800 rs. then if theres trouble with the electronics or the battery then that should flick a few more grands.

55 is too much. Im sure of that.

There's a difference of about 18,000 between a 220fi and 200. If you are getting a 220fi for 55K, a 200 of the same condition should not be more than 43K.

Even if the owner changes, it's not reflected in the owner's manual. You can claim warranty from any showroom, if possible. Secondly, if that's not possible, you can claim the warranty before ownership is changed, and in worst case, you can ask the original owner to come and assist you in claims.

But it depends on lot of factors.
