    single diagnosis, no bullshit..

Advice : Your piston rings/bore clearance is shot, resulting in the oil ring not able to restrict oil flow to the combustion chamber, resulting in smoke

why it goes away after a few kms of riding : The piston expands owing to hear and the rings exert radial force on the liner, resulting in better compression. Thats all, no smoke after that

Adulterated fuel, oil level is all pure bs.

You might wanna check your valve-seals, clearance there as well. That explains the deposition on the spark plug too and other synptoms

    Cheers

      ^^ id have to agree.

because if the oil level was high in the bullet, it would start dying when you would ride it and open the throttle up, as in the bike would feel like going into reserve suddenly. I faced this issue with my T-bird, they had some screwed up oil measurement, and put 400 ml extra oil in my bike!!

Alright update on my Dad's bull.

He showed it to the service center mechanic. The smoke is lesser, but still there. When asked, the mechanic said, he cleaned air filter, tuned carburetor, etc. Dad is keeping an eye on it. I shall update as soon as I hear anything from him.

Well, Nice explanation Atul. however, I dont think this is the case for my Bike. If it was burning Oil, the smoke would have been bluish i suppose. The smoke as I mentioned earlier is White, no hint of Blue in it. Also, if it was burning oil, there should have been some residue of it in the exhaust. There is none, exhaust pipe is clean. Also, if the oil was being burnt, the oil level should have dropped. It did not even after about 200 kms of running.

The bike is running ultra rich. Thats the reason its smoking on Cold starts and also has that distinctive smell. Once the engine warms up, it burns well and there is no smoke. Another clue that led to it being Rich is that the Bike chokes at certain higher RPM. I now have to find a way to make it run leaner. Shall try out a few things coming weekend or one of the days at night after work.

              Dude,

Before calling others' opinion BS, kindly think a little more. What Chinmay is saying is spot on, especially in the context of bullets. Dude, he works on bullets day in and day out just like you do on two strokes. In the older bullets there is this nagging issue of wet-sumping, which causes this issue. Shot piston rings will cause constant smoking and not just at start up. A dark plug indicates an overtly rich mixture, and he isn't talking oily deposits. BTW, the older CI bullets don't have valve stem seals. My two paisa.

              Cheers,

              Jay

Ultra rich will result in black smoke man. I faced this issue just a month ago on my LB500, when I was running a very rich pilot. The throttle response was crap and the plug started fouling. If it is ultra rich, it won't run crisp. In you case, it is the wet sumping which is causing the issue. A very simple solution is to park your engine at TDC when you are parking. Check if this works and get back.

                Cheers,

                  Hi Jay,

                  Thanks a lot for responding.

Well, this is the explaination given by some one who is pretty experienced in Fieros. So will try out things suggested by him and carry on monitoring my bike.

Yes, this thread is talking about Same smoking issue in my Fiero and my Dad's bullet. Same symptoms. Both bikes in different geographical locations. As mentioned in one of the posts earlier, Dad showed the bullet to his mechanic who adjusted the carb and filter. Dad noticed lesser smoke, but is not very happy with the setting. There is no drop is performance in my bike or his. however in my bike i notice choking at a certain higher RPM, around 7500-8000 RPM.

Shall try to take some pics of my bike while smoking and also the condition of the spark plug. I however hope the issue does not exist once i make the fuel feed leaner. Fingers Crossed.

For your Fiero, I suggest you look at the plug. Try changing it. I had to do the same when I richened the mixture too much. My older plug fouled and I had to run a newer one till I sandblasted my older plug.

                    Cheers,

                    Jay

Hmmm sounds like a good idea. Now that makes me think of switching to those Iridium ones. Are they any good. Let me do some research on them. Thanks for the Suggestion.

@Mash - I guess I have explained it all offline and even checked and confirmed the bike? I have given you enough examples and even clarified things, yet your spec of doubt is beyond my help. Like I've told you, these engines work based on physics and not some emotions or assumptions.

And your line "Well, this is the explaination given by some one who is pretty experienced in Fieros. So will try out things suggested by him and carry on monitoring my bike".............. I guess its easier to quote my name? Pretty experienced?? There is no-one who has ever built anything faster than me based on the Fiero and done all possible permutation and combination possible on a Fiero.
Its a clean matter of a richer mixture and its smoking rich during a cold start and I have even verfiied the exhaust fumes and the smell of the mixture. There is a rich flutter at 8000rpm and does not let the engine rev past that.
What other solution are you looking for? I have told you what to do as well Shobhit.

Well, your bullet smoking is a different issue altogether. Unlike the Fiero.
If you suspect the oil to be burning on the Fiero, then explain the chocking at 8000rpm logic to me. Isnt that proof enough to confirm its rich as hell due to the sudden change in weather.
And to all others here, this bike is not stock. Its a 180cc Fiero with my works and the set-up is super sensitive to weather changes and the temps and humidity in Bangalore has dropped by half in the last 2 weeks now and the engine has a direct impact. You have only 2 options to go for. One is jet it low, make it leaner .....or do what i said. Lean the mixture by letting more air flow doing the air filter mod.
Hope this clears your doubts online and offline.

                          Joel,

I got a K&N too once my Bull started gasping for air at higher rpms. This was after I was running a 135 main jet. Immediately, my bull became rev happy.

BTW, congratulations for the big bore set up man. Many Joel Fieros ripping through BLR I guess.

My plug fouled when I went rich on the pilot. So I changed it till I cleaned up my original. When Mash talked about "the experienced person", I guessed it was you man.

                          Cheers,

                          Jay
