  • How to remove tape residuals from tank?

I used scotch tapes for protecting the tank from tank bag scratches, in my Rajasthan trip. I used to use the 3M tapes, which cost 75rs a tape. This time, foolishly I used a local stuff costing 35rs a tape (but looking same, so not a Cellotape). But it is nowhere as easy to remove as the 3M one. Infact the residual sludge by those tapes is still on the bike and is very hard to remove just by water and cloth.

What should I use to remove that sludge, without risking the loss of color?

First pour water or keep an Wet cloth on the stickers and make the Tape Wet for some 10 - 15 mts - after this - use Petrol to wash the remainings
      This is the easiest way....

Kerosene can be vital but loss of paint will cause a problem

There are few other stuff available in market to rremove it --- but All will cause issues in the Paint...

Try the first one --- it worked for me.......

Well, how about using kerosene or petrol & removing them? I don't think they'll remove the paints.

Use a hair dryer to heat the tape and peel off from the end while heating it.

Wipe away the residue with petrol or alcohol, whichever dissolves it.

avoid using petrol/kerosene. use iso propyl alcohol, easily available at any chemist shop.

You better buy a liquid wax polish as it removes those tape residues effectivly without any harm to the paint. I have specially bought a WAXPOL liquid polish for this purpose.

                  Diesel should work as well.

^^ the only problem is kerosene and diesel leave residues! and they can spoil the paint finish as well.

It can be a pain. I used a bottle of 'goo gone' to take out the decals/vinyls after the GAD trip. That chemical is meant specifically for that purpose.

I picked it up from the 'Dollar store' a couple of years ago. Still have more than 80% left.

Most chemicals that are used to remove adhesive are usually petrochemical-based (kerosene, naphtha, etc.) or alcohol-based (methanol or isopropanol). A little exposure to either of them will not damage paint. After all, petrol spills on paint are very common.

The really strong stuff that is likely to damage paint are acetone, paint thinner and some other industrial solvents.

Today I will try the damp cloth and petrol routine, and update the thread. Hope the bike will be spotless again!

Thanks a lot for this valuable trick, Thunder! Now my Vesta is all clean and shining

I used water to first wet and loosen the residue, then wiped it aside be petrol soaked cloth, and again poured water to remove the petrol. No loss of shine or paint, and every residue is gone. Thanks a lot again!

Lucky that you didn't pour petrol over it, just used a cloth dipped in it.
I was about to warn you not to do that.
Anyway, next time use nail polish remover before trying petrol-it works very well!

@jd666: I guess nail polish remover contains the same chemical (iso propyl alcohol) you have mentioned?
