  • Help with Torque Wrench

Hi guys. I have been wanting to get a torque wrench for a long time. I already broke my calliper bleed nipple nut due to over torque by me or the last mechanic. Another mechanic tightened the calliper assy. nuts so bad, that metal shavings came off the fork when i opened it later. So i need some help in buying a torque wrench. Please suggest:

    1) A reputed/decent/trustable brand
    2) Approx. pricing
    3) Torque range required : Kg f.m 0.5-10.0 ~ Nm 5-100 ~ lb f.ft 3.6-72
    4) What is "drive size"
    5) Do the sockets come separately
    6) Is it usable for allen bolts
    7) What else to look for

          1) Taparia / Sealey. Sealey is imported, and pretty expensive. Taparia's is good enough IMO.
          2) Around 2.5k
          3) You may get 5-50 lb.ft, but not 5-100. I have three which vary according to the torque ranges.
          4) Drive size is the size of the square fitting on the wrench to which the bits are attached. There are about 3-4 commonly used drive sizes, and you can go with either of them, as long as you buy the right bits thereafer.
          5) Yup, you need to buy them separately, if you don't already have the bits matching the drive size on the wrench.
          6) Usable for allen bolts, screws, basically anything with a thread, if you have the bit for it.

Ah atlast somebody is interested in this I was also searching around for one few months back, before budget constraints set in :-(

I was quoted Rs.5000 as starting price depending upon the torque range. Rs.2.5k is pretty good. Wonder if it can be used for an RX. Its got range from 0.x Kg to 9.2Kg.

@Mods: This thread can probably be moved to Motorcylce Tools UT thread, so that we have all info in one thread. Just my two cents.

                    3) The three are for 2.5k each?

Here are some of the Indian websites i found:

                        1
                        Torque Wrenches - Ratcheting Model

2 In this, 1003LDFN has the entire torque range NitinGirish and i need. I also read a post by a caliberation technician, that these pressure gauge meter type torque wrenches are the most lasting, ie: loosing caliberation slowest. ( Best place to buy torque wrench? )

Torque Wrenches, Impex Tools, Norar Tools, Norbar Tools, Torque Multiplier, Ratchet Type Torque Wrenches, Electrodes, Dial Indicating Torque Wrenches, Mumbai, India

                        3
Torque Wrench, Torque Wrenches, Adjustable Torque Wrenches, Tube Cleaning Equipments, Torque Tool Dealer, Navi Mumbai, India

                        4
                        All Tools - Torque Wrench

                        Taparia's website has some problem.

I can't find the prices. Online there are ones starting from ~USD 20.

Some help with the previous post too, please.

I can't make out the torque range in that model you have mentioned, I don't know unit conversion

Just a thought, would these wrenches too need regular calibration/resetting/servicing at regular intervals

                              140 Nm ~= 14 kg f.m

Yes, as far as i know, they need caliberation, according to their use and mis-use. But i think the intervals would be far in between, depending on the type of wrench you choose, viz. beam, click, electronic, etc..
