a home use torque wrench can be used for atleast 1-2 years before calibration, maybe more also depending on usage. torque wrenches are generally calibrated once a year.

@aargee - i do recommend the craftsman, i check the site, but pricing with shipping is very high.

^You mean the one that costs INR 25,000? I think the other people here and i, are looking for something a bit cheaper.

The Craftsman 233 pc. Mechanics Tool Set does not have a torque wrench. And i think most of the other items can be bought here in India from reputed Indian brands. I'm not critisizing your choice. It is a reputed brand, and if you can invest, i think its good to get it as a set.

But what i am looking for, is to buy a torque wrench and just a few necessary sockets, and add on, as money allows and needs arise. Original budget is around 2.5k INR max.

I know a Taparia store, i think ill check it out today for the torque wrench.

Well I wouldn't recommend Craftsman to anyone unless they're so passionate about tools because of the high cost; What do you think buddy, I will be sent to asylum if I disclose the price of craftsman @ home; I love working with craftsman, so I consider this as investment (did you know their tools are guaranteed, yes yes GUARANTEED for lifetime) & when it comes to pricing they're even cheaper than drop forged atleast that's the price disclosed

@ NitinGirish I'm from Trivandrum, and this place has absolutely nothing man! Im sure you will easily find a decent tool store in B'lore. The shop i wanted to go to is closed till monday. Another shop has one for 2.8k, but no details at all. I have to go tommorrow, when the expert is there. But still, 2.8k is out of budget. Please look at shops in B'lore and tell me if you find one there. I have friends who can procure from there. In the mean time, ill update you with prices i find here.

Other interested members too please input details that you know along with prices, so up paupers can be happy too.

@Ayson: Sure, I can find out in Bengaluru, but without knowing model exactly to buy I will be like Alice in Wonderland in JC road. We need to narrow down to few options in that price band.

Since this is the torque wrench thread, and you posted in it, and said you were favoring that model, i assumed you may have missed out that, that does not have a torque wrench included.

I doubt there will be too much to choose from in our budget. We have a price range, a torque range, and type (beam, cheapest). Now, im sure there won't be a confusing amount of choices for us. We can't do online research because the prices just aren't there. You will have to follow the rabbit atleast once.

Good to know Taparia makes them. I need to look for one myself. BTW does Service center people use them? Am so fed up of how they tighten the nuts. Seems like they stand over a long lever like truckers do while loosening/tightening trucks tyres.

@Coplay - Craftsman makes one of the best tools in world; till date they haven't outsourced their work to China & hence you can see "Made in USA" etched on their tools & have US quality (way better than Chinese but inferior to Japanese & German quality); Go for Craftsman only...
                          1. If you consider buying tools as investment
                          2. Like the pleasure & pride of holding tools in your hands & working on them

Again, what're the tool set you're gonna order? They've largest collection.

I could not find torque wrenches in that site.

                            1) 2.5k is for Taparia?
                            2) Is it beam, click, or electronic type?
                            3) The three are for 2.5k each?
                            4) An approx. price range for the sockets is appreciated.
Yep.. I've seen a few from Taparia for 2.5k each.
                            2) Click type man.
                            3) Socket prices are fairly standard, and don't vary much. I think you can get a good set of sockets for about 1-1.5k? Maybe too much. I've never enquired or bought sockets separately.

@Op - torque wrench usage is very important, so u need to release as soon as u hear the click.
JD: Will get you some contact details soon. I bought mine locally, and 10-12k is an insane price. Then again, prices vary according to the brand and the range of the torque you can apply.

Just a thought, would these wrenches too need regular calibration/resetting/servicing at regular intervals

                            LOL

Calibration etc depends on how well you use them. If you use them for all kinds of sundry purposes, then you're going to wear out the internals a lot faster. I generally hand tight the bolts to a certain extent, and only then use the torque wrench. I've seen mechanics here use the torque wrench for normal tightening and loosening, so it all depends.

Try Quality Tools on JC Road. It's close to MTR. Let me know if you need directions.

This is actually a very important tool IMO. There must be 'n' number of complaints where engine drain hole threads have come off in owners' hands due to irregular tightening by either the owner/service centre. Nobody uses a torque wrench in service centres unless it's a superbike being tended to. Simply because there's no time to use torque wrenches on every machine they work on.

^ Thanks rossiter. Yeah, will visit Quality Tools after my monthly injection of Vitamin M.

+1 regarding the importance of torque wrench and the service centers not using it. Infact, a technician at M.S.P Auto World (Yam dealer) candidly said, they don't use any euipment to service the bike inspite of having them. He said, if they start servicing with all that equipment, they can't service even one bike/day
