Fitting Tube Type Tire as Tubeless? (I ask forgiveness if my Questions are in the wrong thread).

Hey I have planned to go LEH in the month of July 2010 on my Karizma with a pillion. I would be using the Manali - LEH Route. The only problem I am facing at the moment is finding right tire for my bike.

I have read all of the thread for Karizma, and found few good suggestions about tires that can be fitted to karizma.

The options that I went for were Michelin Sirac and CEAT Vertigo. But I was not able to find any tire from these companies that were TUBELESS. All the tires that I searched and found were TUBE TYPE, and everyone was willing to make that TUBE TYPE TIRE into tubeless one.

Being a novice to biking, and I have never heard or done such a thing before: - like fitting a tube type tire as a tubeless one. I am bit nervous about doing so.

So I would like experts to shed some light and help me.

    My Questions are:-

Are tubeless tires available for Karizma, and if yes where can I buy them in Mumbai.

Is it reasonable/satisfactory to fit a tube type tire as a tubeless tire and use it? Please help me with pros and cons of fitting such a tire.

If I am not able to find a tubeless tire, will it be good enough to use a tube type tire and make the trip.

If anyone has a better suggestion I would be thankful if they can guide me in the right direction.

Tubeless must be available for ZMA, check ZMR profile tyres.
AFAIK, Tube tyres cannot be used as tubeless. The main reasons are

      1) How will you fit a airtight nozzle to the tyre for filling air.

      2) The sidewall beading of tubeless tyres are made such that the get lock to
the RIM which is not the exact case with tubed ones.

Instead use a good quality tube tyre and a good tube. It will take a real Hard-offroading to get the new hard-tubed tyre puncture.

        Hey Thanks for the Reply:-

I am not going to fit a tube type tire by converting it to a tubeless one, and I appreciate your response about it.

I have few more shops where I will search for a tubeless tire, (Metro Tires, lamington road). By the end of this week if am not able to find any I will surely go for the Ceat Vertigo Tube Type tire.

        Thanks Again.

MRF Zapper are available in 100/90 18 and 90/90 18 which is stock size for the ZMA and they are available in tubeless form. Also tube type tyre can be used as tubeless the diff is only the valve which will have to be purchased anyhow.
Never upgrade without getting your basics RIGHT.

i think your main concern for tubeless tyre is to repair punctures in them as its quite combursum to repair a tube type tyre in the middle of no where. if this is the main concern then there is a way around it.there is a product called slime which is avl in the market which is filled inside the tube before inflation and it seels any decent puntures as it seals the area with it from inside.
there is also another way,as your tyre is 18 inch you can opt for honda tuffpuff tube which is having such gel type material in the tube that prevent it from leaking.its used in honda unicorns,.

and coming to your main question......
yes its possible to fit tube tpe tyre as tubeless but the performence is a question,.some work some dont.there is a alweays chance that it can fail. finding valve is not a prob;lem in palce like mumbai. even if you cant get valves use tube valves with some rubber packing and some seleant it will work as its tried and tested by our very own jasmeetsinghchawla bhai on his apache.

coming to tyres as jasmeetsinghchawla said mrf are avl as tubeless options.also check for ceat as its the best tyre i repeat the best tyre you want in ur bike if u r doing ladakh, and are avl in tubeless options i think as in 17 inch its avl, find that.it will be best and the best part it will be cheap.
also michhilin sirac is a tube type Tyre but many are using it as a tubeless ,as the marketing guy for michilin named xbhp id- gogreen aka mr.gaurav he said there shouldn't be any prob with it.
imp don't believe any one,ALL TUBELESS TIRES ARE WRITTEN TUBELESS CLEARLY ON THE SIDE OF THE TYRE.

Yes, the things said by DRVTM & ABHICHOTU is correct.
Look the ZMR thread and search for WORRISOMEBEAR aka Mohsin in Mumbai. He is having White ZMR. He will surely help you to locate a dealer.

Myself has also changed the rear of my ZMR from ZAPPER-Y to ZAPPER-Q.
Mostly all indian Tubeless Tires comes with default tube as an option.

For front MRF ZAPPER-FS and for rear MRF ZAPPER-Q with Valves should fit in your ZMA.
Tire specs are exactly same. Michelin or Pirelli is difficult to be found with exact match.

My very close friend is in CEAT Tires. Vertigo is very good but tubeless is rarely to be found. I would have fixed that free of cost if it would have been available in Kolkata.

CEAT VERTIGO SPORT in 120/80-18 is tubeless. Its clearly written on side wall. Only thing is its 120 section !!

                Better to find ZMR tires.

Guys, I have fitted Zapper Q 110/90 (rear) on my ZMR which is is written as tube type on the side wall, but the dealer says its one and the same you can fix any tyre as tubeless.

Please advise if this is fine.
