  • Problem with Self starter

    Hey guys,

I have a black Pulsar 135, that's done about 950 kms. The bike is great, with a very good engine that delivers excellent performance for it's size.

However, I've been having a problem with the self of late. If I leave the bike switched off for, about 30 mins or more, and then if I use self, the display goes blank (except the Neutral indicator), then the self check happens (speedo self check only, tacho doesn't move), and the display comes back to normal, but the trip meter gets reset. The vehicles starts when the display changes from the blank state to the reset state.

Yesterday, the bike didn't start, even after multiple presses. The display was going blank, and there were failed cranks. I kick started it, rode for about 1 km, switched it off, used self, and it worked.

What could be the issue? I also started the engine using self, and immediately turned on the headlights, and there was no flickering, thus possibly eliminating a dead battery.

Could it be a fault in the starting circuit? Blown capacitor or something? I remember reading someone with a similar fault in the apache owner's thread, but couldn't find it.

Lights and horns do not need much current (~3-4A) from the battery. My horns and lights used to work fine on my battery but it would not crank, the relay would just buzz because the battery could not provide the needed current. The starter motor, as you might know, draws a lot of current (~60-150A). I would suggest you try checking by swapping a battery from a friend. Or if you have a car and jumper cables that would help too.

If you have a multimeter you can check your battery state and whether your charging system is fine. The voltage between the two terminals when the bike is idling without battery should be around 14V (+/- 1). The battery should have: 12.6V or more for 100% charge, 12.42V - 80%, 12.06 - 50%, 11.9V - 40%, (It should not be any lower, if it is it indicates a fault with the battery or charger), 11.58V - 20%, 10.5V - 0%. The battery has to be checked after disconnecting it.

I suggest a load test for your battery or just try swapping the battery and keep it atleast for a day and see if the problem persists.

The results of that can quite easily isolate the problem.

Sometimes it works fine even after 3 hours (the bike is left switched off for three hours), while someimes it doesn't. Guess I have to head to the service center.

I did visit the service center, the guy there said a terminal was loose and tightened it. The starter worked fine for the next two days, but then the problem has resurfaced again.

Sometimes, the bike starts even after 6-7 hour gaps (Once, it even started after a full 24 hour gap). Sometimes, the bike doesn't start (ie, self start) if it is left alone for 1 hour or so. It starts for sure if the engine is still hot (Kick works perfectly all the time, I am talking only about self here).

I mostly take the bike out only for a 1 km ride (which is to my class) on 2 days out of the 7 days of a week, and on 2-3 days of the week, it remains in the house. Sometimes, I do take it for a 60 km trip, but then that is like once in three weeks or so. However, I do use it to go out for reasonably long trips (about 6 kms avg) on saturdays.

I need the help of experienced bikers. Is my scanty riding a problem, or is there any issue with relays or internal wiring? Any ideas?

Another question, for those of you who've had weak batteries and bikes with digital consoles, does your console go blank whenever you try to use the self starter?

Yes mine does. and i have a P180UG3. I guess the problem lies in your battery and/or the charging system.
