  • Made a CE Rated (Level 2) Knee gaurd for Rs 950 :)

After endless hours searching the worldwide-web for a knee guards which should fulfill the following criteria:

    1. A CE Rated Armor
    2. Be able wear all day long comfortably
    3. Not Very Expensive

Though the market has quite a few products starting from Fox raptor (fake) for 800 Rs approx to ones ranging over Rs 5000. There was only one product that ticked all boxes, the Spartan Perseus Knee Guards with Knox armor, Inner-wear & Rs 2500 seamed fair enough deal to be until i saw the SAS TEC KNEE ARMOR in outdoortravelgear and I had an IDEA to make my own Knee guard.

    Fairly Simple Idea which requires:

    1. SAS TEC SC-1/02 : Rs 850 for a Pair
    2. Knee Support tube : Rs 100 a pair or less

    Total Expense: Rs 950

Just Place the Armor on the knee and wear the tube over it. the elastic tube keeps the armors on place and doesn't move even after I climb stairs or sprint. Unlike Knox, Sas tec armor molds itself according to the shape of your body. So, its very comfortable even after wearing it for 10 hrs straight. Its slim enough to stay discreet even below a slim fit jean.

Will experiment with the design and post a improved design later.

TIP 1: Keep your legs straight while placing the armour over the knee cap if the armour moves when you bend your knee then place the armour slightly higher and cover it completely with the tube (the grip should rest on your skin, not on the armour)

TIP 2: The tube should feel tight over the knee without the armour and should be of Large Size, a loose tube will allow armour movement

Have Experimented with few designs but nothing seems to work better than the initial simple technique.
Since, they stay discreet, i wear them every time i climb the saddle (even for a short distance). With the tubes the armour stays in place and when i don't want to wear them. i just slid the tube below knee, remove the armour and leave the tube over my shin. Simple and effective.

I idea seems brilliant.. gr8 job done..

But my 2 cents, Incase of a crash due to sliding and abrasion the tube (If gets torn) or gets moving.. the knee gaurd would not be able to protect the knee ,since neither of them has a locking mechanism. Just a thought..
            RIP Marco

              Thank You.

Well, I can't say much about taking a fall. But, The tube is made of cotton and is supported by a web of elastic bands and with two firm grip on both ends. even during a slide, if the tube is torn from place from wont effect the rest of the tube (unless either of the strong grip at the end is damaged) because i have already done that by cutting a big hole in the tube and wearing the armor. It still keeps the armour in place with the support of the elastic web design).

once the tube is over the armour, the armour molds itself over the knee cap because of the tube's pressure and become a part of You. Trust me, this armour is very different from the Knox armour i have in my Jacket. Sas Tec is sexy

I used a Tube, one can also use the knee supports that come with velcro straps

Have you tried using it on any of the ride ?

Had tried this once, but knee support tube won't hold in place for a longer time when you fold your knees while riding and again stretch it when you keep your legs down. Had to constantly adjust the protector to stay in place. Let me know if you find a solution for this

I have both armours Knox as well as SasTec..

Compared to Knox, SasTec is soft and very comfortable to wear. At the same time I have found that during impact the SasTec armour absorbs the impact much more effectively than the Knox armour.

Knox I have found is just like any normal armour, did not find anything special with it. But yes SasTec is just Awesome..!!

                    Are u using sas-tec armour?

Yes, I wear them everytime i ride. wore them for 10hrs straight which included riding, trekking, climbing stairs. the sastec armour never moves, it molds itself like a secondary knee cap.

I am using a similar tube Buy Tynor Knee Cap - Large (Pair) Online at Low Prices in India - Amazon.in

Even I have a pair of short tube and a pair of long ones. Are the tubes feel tight around the knee without the armour? if No then get a new pair. For the shorter tube, i pull the tube over the kneecap and cover the armour at the top entirely leaving the armour from the bottom exposed a bit. pull the tube more towards your thigh till the point which doesn't affect much (Let the grip rest there) when u bend your knees. hope it helps.

                        I using a pair of Protex knee/thigh caps http://www.amazon.in/PROTEX-KNEE-THI.../dp/B00LGUHWNQ

Bro, Keep your legs straight while placing the armour and wear the armour slightly above the position you were previously wearing.

awesome idea bro.. but, one question, in case of a fall, the elastic will tear immediately upon impact on tarmac, then won't the armour be displaced and expose your knees making this more dangerous?
