  • [Ownership Thread]: Suzuki slingshot plus

    Hello folks! I developed a passion for bikes right from when I was in my 12 std. I didn't have any bikes at home and so it all started off with discussions with my friend. I decided that I'll buy a bike once I begin with my 4th year engineering. So fast forwarding 4 long years let me come straight to the days before the purchase. Guys, I think many of us face a huge problem when buying a bike (especially when there are so many out there in the market) i.e. mapping of our needs. I was so confused and kept talking about bikes like FZ and SZ and GS 150 R. Not that these bikes were any bad, the problem simply was that I didn't have the need for so much of power.(plus to speed up you need relatively empty roads, in my case that was impossible)

    That is when my dad pitched in and helped me understand what I really needed. I just needed a bike to commute to the suburban station nearby on a daily basis ever since the auto fares shot up like hell. So I visited yamaha's showroom and saw the SS-125 and the YBR-125 but somehow couldn't bring myself to like them. The very next showroom I visited was that of bajaj and had a look at the bikes there. The sales representative clearly tried to push me towards pulsar and far far away from the discover brands. I liked pulsar 135 but again it was pretty powerful (that was a positive) and a little out of the budget I had in mind. So with mixed feelings I walked out of the showroom. Also a very close friend of mine who is a pulsar 220 user told me that the bajaj bikes needed a little extra attention towards maintenance as the bikes age.

    Then I visited the suzuki showroom and as soon as I walked in I realized that I had found the bike I wanted - The Suzuki Slingshot Plus. I didn't even think of any other bike standing in that showroom and just focused on this scarlet beauty standing in front of me. The dealer gave me the tech specs brochure and explained all the stuff. The bike looked like a stunner even though it was just a 125 cc. Now since the tech specs for this bike are splashed all over the internet, I shall get down straight to the positives

    Some of the Positives
    • Awesome mileage (people have claimed that it can give a whooping 67 + kmpl)
    • The riding comfort and seating position
    • The front disc brakes
    • The gear indicators(I learnt riding on this bike and this was a boon)
    • The engine is butter smooth
    • No vibrations at high speeds(this I haven't personally experienced but have read extensively in many reviews)
    • Over all a low cost bike (got it for 56,800)


    Some of the negatives
    • The 8.4 bhp was a tad less, the suzuki fellas could have achieved a 10
    • The pickup is a little slow initially, but once you cross 20 kmph plus, the bike is a darling
    • The gear shift feels a little hard (but this problem may vanish after the run in)


    It is going to be nearly 2 months since I purchased the bike and I have completed around 530 kms on the odo. The latest mileage I have gotten is around 58 kmpl even though I didn't cross 40 kmph at all. So once the run -in is over I hope to achieve a mileage of around 67 +. I'll try to post the pictures as soon as possible. Till then, ride safely!!

      Welcome Nishanth to xBHP.

      Nice review you have written. Hope you have tons of happy miles on your beloved bike. Why don't you add a picture of your bike here?

        Welcome on-board Nishanth. Don't ride at fixed RPMs during running in. Keep varying load on the engine for better results.

            There is already an ownership thread for SS+, here http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/motorcyc...ot-plus-5.html, requesting mods to merge both, Congrats on your purchase, Stay under 50 and you'll surely get awesome mileage, and BTW please give me a feedback about the disc break, cause mine is very drummy.

              Rashid, your bike really looks good even after 2 years. Btw I have been reading through all of your earlier posts and hence wanted to ask whether the problems you mentioned there have been solved(I guess you were talking about the chain). Well my disc brakes are good, spot on actually. The reason you may find them ''drummy'' is possibly because the rear brakes are still drum brakes and when we apply them together, the front alone may not be able to the job (just guessing). Will post my bike's pictures too. Also wanted to ask you whether you have changed your tyres to tubeless and if not can we still fill nitrogen into our stock tube tyres?

                oh no,rear brakes are awesome,front is far faar worse than rear,Disc does its job but its lazy, you need to grab the brakes to make the bike stop.i took good care of the paint in the first year, then i got bored and busy and my bike is yet to complete 2 yrs,
                BTW is your brake BYBRE branded? mine is not,chain problem solved after replacing the set.
                My friend filled Nitrogen in his fz,as he was facing air leak issues, i`ll update after getting his report, nitrogen being an inert gas probably wont cause any problem to tubes but i doubt whether there is any benefit, i`m planning to up-size my rear tires but not very soon.

                  Yeah, my disc brake is bybre. Coming to the brakes, I some how find my bike's rear drum to be not so agile. While talking about the front, the guy at the service centre says that when you happen to apply the front brakes just press it until you hear a click and then let go (that would be the point where the brakes would engage). I have still not gotten comfortable doing that and go all out and press the front brake. Anyways, I park my bike on a daily basis under direct sunlight (station parking lot), so due think I need to take extra care of my bike's paint?

                    Ok, folks! A good 3 months have passed since I purchased my bike and boy o'h boy it never ceases to amaze me. The engine is extremely refined and you just feel like listening to it again and again. I have been consistently getting 56 kmpl within the city, with frequent gear shifts almost becoming a daily habit while riding because of the roads and traffic. I have completed around 1160 kms on the odo along with 2 free services. The engine oil wasn't replaced in the 2 nd service because the bike had barely run more than 500 kms after the first and before the second. The rest of the controls seem to be easing and I find that shifting gears has become much easier than before while the engine shows good response to slight bursts of throttle. Over all I am a happy suzuki fan!

The next showroom I visited via ​limo​ was Bajaj's, and I had a look at the bikes there. The sales representative tried to push me towards the Pulsar and away from the Discover brands. I liked the Pulsar 135, but again, it was quite powerful (which was a positive), and a little out of the budget I had in mind. So, with mixed feelings, I walked out of the showroom. Additionally, a very close friend of mine who owns a Pulsar 220 told me that Bajaj bikes needed a little extra attention towards maintenance as they age.
