Please ask them to give this in writing and sign on the dealership's letterhead. Would be of immense help should you need repairs otherwise not covered in warranty.
This isn't just limited to R15/R3; but all vehicles.

Another fun thing is that the salesperson said that R15 has an high speed engine and there is no need for running in[emoji23]

Second, the default setting for shift lights are at 7K, Yamaha India sets it that way. So if it's at 11K then it might have been changed later and not from factory.

Third, why did you give your new bike to the showroom guy at all? Anyways, hope everything is good and no permanent damage to the engine has happened due to this non sense.

Which showroom and which city you took the delivery from?

May it was idling for 30sec or so, but he reved it to check for sounds from the engine, so that was convincing to me. And once again to show me the shift lights at 11k ( changed it to 7k later). And the third time , i had a short spin after which my dad asked the showroom guy to take a test ride and he ripped out the throttle for about 2 kms.
This would be the saddest delivery ever happened.

One of the main reasons I decided on R3 was the exact point you mention --> maintenance cost of 1.3 Rs/Km. Purchase cost is high at 4L but I think for a CKD sportsbike, running and maintenance costs are very reasonable.

Regarding insurance-
So there are 3 components to the insurance.
Own damage cover - 1 year cover - 6K
Personal accident cover for owner driver - 1 year cover - 750
Basic 3rd party liability - 5 years cover - 6K
Other tax.
According to the new rules by Supreme Court, 3rd party liability of 5 years need to be paid upfront. This is making the insurance for new vehicles go a bit high.

First of all, a hearty congrats for your new R3. You'll enjoy as we all have been enjoying the bike.

Regarding the Kawasaki experience, I think they have included handling charges within the registration and insurance charges which is common and an illegal thing to ask from customers. Hence, I guess, they couldn't give you a detailed break-up of the charges. Also, 17K INR is a very big amount of insurance for a 2.98L bike. I remember when I got the the R3, the IDV was set at 3.31 L and the premium was 8K something INR and it was a zero-dep policy too from Bharti AXA. So a 2.98L bike can't have a 17K INR premium, no matter whatever clauses they offer over the policy. Even Kawasaki supports the dealers for charging 'handling charges' to the customers which is pretty annoying.

For R3, there are two types of service. The normal one happens at 5K, 15K, 25K and so on... The Periodic one happens at 10K, 20K, 30K and so on. Normal service costs somewhere around 2-2.5K INR. Periodic service will cost around 5-6K INR depending on the work you're getting done. And as of now, after 70K on the ODO, my R3 has costed only 1.3 Rs/km for maintenance which includes tires, spares, separate engine oils (I started using Motul 7100 from 15K kms) and all service and only excluding petrol cost. And yes R3 is cheap to maintain than my R15V2.

Why I chose the R3

I just got my new R3 and keen to share my experience. I'm back to riding bike after a gap of 2 years. I had the TNT300 before this. I considered 3 bikes - N300, R3 and BMW G310R. BMW was outta the race pretty soon when they announced the pricing and I didn't really want to go back to a single.

Down to N300 and R3-

N300 is OTR 3.73 L in my city. 2.98 L ex-showroom and a whopping 75K for registration and insurance.
R3 is OTR 3.96 L in my city. 3.49 L ex-showroom and 47K for registration and insurance.

Experience at Kawasaki showroom-
I just couldn't understand the 75K charged by Kawasaki. Outta this 17K was insurance and the rest was registration. I asked for a detailed break-up of the rest but they couldn't give me. The sales guy's reply was "We don't have, Sir". They just dumped their entire range pricing on a paper to me. I insisted for a quote for N300 only with a detailed break-up but they just pointed to the paper. Both colors were on display but not ready for delivery. They quoted 45-60 days for delivery. They voluntarily offered a test ride however the bike wasn't there and never bothered to take my number. Asking booking amount was 25K. The bikes looked great and I couldn't find any noticeable difference with the local parts. The Ninja looked shinier than ever before!! But not a great experience overall.

Experience at the Yamaha showroom-
I think there are 5 dealers in my city who deal and service R3 and decided to visit one who had good reviews overall and closest to my home. I got a detailed quote with full transparency. The sales guy answered all my questions that I threw at him. They had 2 bikes in Team Yamaha Blue color with PDI done and ready for delivery. Test ride was not offered. Insurance was cheaper at 15K and rest for registration which is way less than Kawasaki. I visited the showroom 2 more times to inspect the bike, selected and paid booking advance of 5K. The sales guy actually asked 2K but I paid 5K to show I was serious to buy the bike. Rest of the formalities were just smooth. Great experience!

Why I got the R3-
Not a great experience at the Kawasaki showroom (so much for being "premium" and all that BS)

The difference between the bikes was 23K.

I get slightly more power and few CCs extra with R3 (more power is always welcome)

R3 is lighter (I owned TNT300 which was at 194 kilos so a lighter bike was important to me)

Metz tyres on R3

Delivery time. I live in Chennai and these 4 months (Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb) are when the temperatures are down and great for riding. Waiting 2 months for N300 would mean that I will miss out on this. R3 was just ready for delivery.

3 free service for R3. None at Kawasaki.

Only 1 showroom and 1 service center for Kawasaki. Atleast I would have a choice with Yamaha.

Yamaha sales guy gave service estimates of 3-3.5K. Kawasaki was 6-7K. (Benelli was similar at 6-7K and I didn't want that again)

Even after localization N300 is at 3.73L in my city. For 23K more I get all the above and a complete CKD. I'm still not sure of the quality and durability of the localized parts on N300. Most reviews were positive and the parts might be cheaper to replace but I really dunno and cannot confirm. Kawasaki may still charge a "premium".

If the difference was atleast 50K I probably would've opted N300. I guess it has better handling and a slipper clutch. But the pricing was quite uncomfortably close to R3.


I think both bikes are great and you probably wouldn't go wrong with either.

But I answered the call of the blue and enjoying every bit of the R3.

So if I understand correctly, you redlined a brand new bike. That's awesome and shouldn't have been done and the showroom person should've stopped you.

Now coming to the point, yes it's normal if you're revving your bike that way and as I can guess that's a sudden throttle, so it's ok.

Its red lined , after 9.5 to 10k the smoke appeared , with some frying smell!!

Congrats on your new bike !!

I have been very happy with the performance of the R3 for the last 3 years and coupled with its low maintenance, it's a really good touring bike which can do anything actually. So you'll be happy onwards.

Regarding the smoke, at which RPM you revved the bike, if you remember?
