Regarding a good mechanic, first know what needs to be done. Ask questions. You may end up stumbling a few times before you find a good one.
The extra money you spend will be tuition fees for this learning experience of identifying a good mechanic.

    All the best.
Hi, How are you doing? Hope, you are safe from the rain and flood there.

I have a strange issue with my bike's engine oil level, it's getting low after few weeks of top up. Finally took my bike for service today to service center, the mechanic said cylinder block needs to be changed and quotes around Rs 5500 + labor. I am in a dilemma now. Not sure I need to spend that much. Already for the service today I ended up spending Rs 2200 (around 1023 for changing few spares & 1186 on labor). GST alone comes to Rs 350 . Regarding engine oil level getting low, I told them to put a new ring in the oil level gauge as I noticed blackening around the gauge and so I suspected leakage. However, not sure what to do further on that issue. Please help me out here.

Also my bike is completing 15 yrs by april next yr and so I need to re-register. I am not the kind of exchanging or buy-sell guy and so planning to use CT 100 for my local rides but buy a new bike/scooter for highway rides. In another 6 months time, i will have to buy a new bike/scooter. Again looking for a vehicle giving good mileage and comfort ride in both categories (bike/scooter). Budget would be around 50K - 60K. Any suggestions will be helpful? I have 6 months time though to decide.

      Hi.
Thanks I am safe here. Hope you are too.

You are burning engine oil, hence the dropping levels of engine oil.

Like I had said in one of my previous posts, you will have to rebore, change to a slightly bigger piston & rings - approx. 2K in Mumbai my local mechanic.

Regarding this expenditure, do you want to put in this money?

Next year renewal of registration & environment tax (a.k.a. green tax) will need to be paid.

I know you don't want to sell the bike. However do consider it.

Reworked blocks and pistons are highly dependent on the skill of the concerned mechanic.

A new block from ASC will set you back by 5500 + labour (approx. 1500 maybe) + 18% GST give or take it will come up to 8300.

Resale value of our bike now may be twice as much at best. Now add green tax and registration renewal amounts to cost of repairs.

I urge you to strongly consider feasibility.

If you are intent on keeping the bike, then consider a trustworthy mechanic locally who can oversize your piston and resolve the issue.

Wait for the BSVI bikes to be released, as from April 1, 2020 BSVI sales mandatory.

Have you considered any of the E-bikes?

About a month ago, i took my bike to nearby mechanic and he told it will take Rs 4000 for reboring. Another known mechanic suggested me to take to ASC since they will change everything with warranty but that is out of option now as it is costly. By the way, did you say the approx 2K is for reboring and also changing piston & rings? If the whole repair costs around 2K or 2.5K I m ready to fix it immediately. I think i need to keep checking with the other mechanics for cost but still I dont know how skilled they will be working on blocks and pistons. I will also need to do this as soon as possible since this issue should not create any other issue with engine.

Regarding BS6 Bikes I don't know the benefit. I need to read about it.

Regarding E-bikes, I came across Okinawa ridge. It seems to give good mileage and cost seems to be okay. However, no one owns it that I can directly check with.

Maybe my mechanic gives me special rates, as my family's bikes have been around him for servicing since decades now.

If you are not confident about their quality of work, reboring may be a bad idea, as if the problem persists at same level, you will not come to know till after a few weeks. Requiring you to put in more money to do the work at the ASC.

Do you see white smoke from the exhaust if you twist the throttle hard?

If you don't, then you still have time, as amount of oil being burnt is not much. Keep an eye on the oil levels till you get the work done.

Regarding BSVI bikes, might as well purchase new emissions compliant vehicle than not or atleast get a massive discount a few days prior to the deadline.

Yes. I am not familiar with that much trust worthy mechanic. Almost every time I got my bike service done by ASC. Regarding smoke, last time when the oil was low and when that mechanic twisted the throttle hard he showed me black smoke in his palm. I think it should be more than a month and after that i topped up the oil few times and in ASC they told me when there is an oil then there wont be any smoke.

4 stroke oil burns with white smoke.
In our bikes, engine oil is not meant to burn.

If engine oil levels are dropping, it is either leaking out / getting burnt.

Leakage : replace the clutch cover gasket, the drain plug and its gasket.

Getting burnt : The bore, piston and rings need some looking at.

If oversize can be done from a good place, then have it done at a reasonable cost.

ASC costs would have been prohibitive for me especially if I am planning to buy a 50-60k bike in less than a year.

Practically speaking the bike would rather be sold and the money saved from not getting the work done i.e. part + labour cost at ASC
& money received from selling it off can be either increase the budget for new purchase / better still put in FD / invested otherwise to buffer the cost of petrol in new bike.

Black smoke is a result of bad carburettor tuning / inadequate air flow, wherein a richer mixture goes in.

The black soot in your case may have been from a previous instance, soot particles get stuck in the exhaust. Even with your engine oil topped up, during high revs you may still be able to see the black soot from your exhaust against a white / light coloured background.

Watched the review. Features seem to be good especially the 5th gear or H gear (aimed for Highway rides), display unit and Anti skid system. Personally I don't drive at all on the highways but just on the intercity roads. Roll on acceleration in 3rd gear for quick overtaking is something i like in city rides. What do you think?

Hey by the way, I have to change my broken front R indicator and rear L indicator in CT 100. Bought the duplicate indicators (Rs 80 each). Looking for some videos or pictures on how to change them. I am not sure about opening the front doom or rear seat either. I need some help here. I also need some help on buying toolkit for bike. Please suggest.

Regarding the tool kit, purchase an open ended spanner set (no. 6 - 22), a phillip head (+shaped) screwdriver and a plain screwdriver, extra no. 8, 10, 12 open ended spanners.

Removing of the seat, use the ignition key to remove the LHS side panel, and the Phillip head screwdriver to remove the RHS side panel.

Use the no. 10 open ended spanner, undo the bolts under the seat on both sides which hold the seat in place.

Slide the seat in front and remove it. You will see wires which lead up to your defective indicator. Disconnect both the connectors.

Using the no. 14 / 15 open ended spanner undo the nut on the indicator located on the underside of the rear mudguard. The old indicator will come off.

Pass the wires of the new indicator through the hole in the mudguard and screw on the nut from the underside of the mudguard.
Connect the new wires to their respective connectors.

Bajaj has kept one long & one short female type connector wires on the bike side and one short & one long male type connector wires on the indicator side.

Match the long with the short and vice versa.

Plug in the ignition key and use the indicator switch.

Close up in the reverse order.

Regarding front indicator & removal of the front visor / dome, removal is easy, replacing it is a bit tricky.

Undo the nut- bolt under the dome behind the numberplate using the no. 8 spanners.

Using the Phillip head screwdriver unscrew the screws on both the sides above the indicators. Pull out the dome from the front. Disengage the flange where the nut- bolt and remove the dome completely. Place the dome on the front mudguard, don't need to disconnect any connectors.

Identify the bullet connectors for the defective indicator, disconnect them. Undo the nut as before, remove the old indicator, replace with new indicator. Reconnect the connectors as done for the rear long to short and vice versa.

Slide the flat horizontal part of the visor / dome in between the metal projection for the side screw (which you removed) and the speedometer / fuel meter assembly angle from below upwards.

Push it in place, then re-engage the flange for the nut- bolt behind the numberplate. Replace the screws first followed by the nut- bolt.

                      Done.

I may have the photos somewhere, I will attach a.s.a.p.

If you start doing it, these steps will guide you well.

Ok. Since more than a month I have been constantly watching the engine oil level and more or less it remains the same. The thing is I am keeping the speed 40 - 50 and distance traveled per day not more than 40 kms (both up and down). I think the problem before was due to engine overheating as I used to give more throttle and sometimes hit 70-75 in highways. I am not going to ride my bike like that anymore and always going to keep the speed around 50 kms or below and i think thats the way to go.

Any luck with the photos? New problem - Dashboard light is flickering on the odometer side but fuel indicator side is fine. It used to flicker only when i start my bike but now it stopped most of the time and at times during the ride flickering. Any thoughts?

My right side mirror holder of CT 100 has lost its thread and I am unable to put the mirror in its position. Service guy is telling the replacement only comes with the whole set (including front brake). Is there any other way exist to fix the thread issue?

                            M-Seal.

Not ideal by any means, but is the easiest and cheapest fix.

Though next time the mirror breaks you'll have to replace the whole set as advised, or disassemble mirror and fix on old stalk.

                            Cheers,

                              Hello Guys
This is my first post. I am planning to buy a mileage bike. Confused between Bajaj CT100 and Bajaj Platina comfortec 100. What is the difference between two apart from suspension. My budget is around 50K to 60K.

AP, I have another question. I need to change the engine oil for ct100 but the normal spanners don't fit bolt head properly as they are straight. Should I get a bent spanner like what the mechanic use? do you know the spanner size i should ask the hardware?
