Final Result Shimla Motorcycle Challenge 2008 - Round 4
The Fight for the Fastest!
Yogesh’s cautious start on the First lap nearly cost him the crown for the Fastest Rider in the Final Round of the Shimla Motorcycle Challenge 2008 as youngster Aneesh Awasthi’s all out effort in the Final lap brought them both level with the same timings for their best laps.

Lakhani starts in Lap 1
Yogesh’s first lap was a blistering 10:36. His timing of 03:20 for the second intermediate, a very rough kutcha uphill 2.1 kms long , was a full 10 sec faster than any other competitor in any other lap. But it was the first intermediate, a 750 metre flattish downhill that was partly pucca and partly kutcha that kept him from setting a time beyond the scope of the competition. He posted his personal slowest of 01:06, a time he brought down to 01:00 and 00:56 in subsequent laps, but overall he slowed with each passing lap.
Twenty flag-offs later, Aneesh Awasthi set off in pursuit. His Group D Pulsar 180 was no match for Yogesh’s Group C Karizma on the second inter but despite trailing 13 seconds on that stretch he was merely 4 secs behind his quarry at the end of the fourth intermediate, a 2.95 km long narrow twisty downhill tarmac. The last intermediate, a 1.5 km slight downhill kutcha, was where disaster struck his dream run. He ended off the road and lost a minimum of 17 seconds in that stage to end fifth fastest with 10:57.
The next lap was worse for Aneesh. His bike stalled just a few metres into the second inter due to an electrical failure and he spent the lap as a spectator parked on the roadside.

Aneesh muses as others ride by after stalling in lap 2
This meant that he had to take the start as the last bike in the final lap, behind much slower riders and on a progressively worsening track that had stones being swept onto it by each passing bike. Just one second faster and he would have realized the goal he had set just 4 month ago when he entered in his first ever competitive event. The goal of being the fastest in the Shimla Motorcycle Challenge.
With their Best lap times tied at 10:36. Yogesh Lakhani and Aneesh Awasthi were joint winners of the fastest lap title for the season ending round of the Championship.

Delhi Riders at the Shimla Motorcycle Challenge
Delhi Riders at the Shimla Motorcycle Challenge
Out of the 7 riders from Delhi and nearabouts, who had submitted their entries for the Shimla Motorcycle Challenge only five made it to Shimla and scrutiny on Friday, 5th December. And of the ones that managed to arrive only three took the start the subsequent day Saturday, 6th December.
With Vivek Sharma meeting with an accident a few days prior to the event and Manik Mittal failing to turn up on Scrutiny day, it was left to newbies Dheeraj Singh, Nagadeepan, Sundeep Kumar and Sunil Kumar Gupta and veteran rider Amardev Singh to keep the Delhi flag waving high.
However that was not to be. Sundeep Kumar high sided early on Saturday morning while practicing and returned back to his room. On getting the news of the fall Dheeraj Singh also decided to pull out of the event and return to Taradevi to be with his friend.
That left only Sunil Kumar Gupta in 4D and Nagadeepan R in A1 apart from Amardev Singh who has competed in every round of the Shimla Motorcycle Challenge.
Amardev’s fastest time of 12:13 was good enough to get him only 7th place in 4D but the two points he gathered were enough to take his championship score to 12 and clinch the third prize in the Championship in his group.
Sunil Kumar Gupta also posted his best effort of 14:07 in the first lap itself while Nagadeepan’s best of 17:11 came about in the last lap.

Chirag on Full SteamSunil Chauhan on his trusty Shaolin
The pressure also caught up with Vivek Arora in the last round as he had lost the plot in round 3 despite podium finishes in the earlier editions. Needing to end up third or higher in round 4 to find a place on the podium in the Championship Vivek oversped on the downhill tarmac and ended up with a mighty crash that saw him being evacuated out from the stage and out from competition.

Piyush and Sourav managed to retain the first and second spots in the Championship followed by Aneesh. Chirag missed out the Championship podium by only 1 point closely followed by Sunil Chauhan.

6 D Himachal champions
The intensity of the competition in 6 D can be gauged by the fact that 4 D winner Sanjay Kumar Sharma would have only finished 7th with his best of 11:33 had he been in the same group.
