Team Ducati Alstare gear up for Round 3

The historic TT Circuit of Assen is the next scheduled stop for Team SBK Ducati Alstare, as riders Carlos Checa and Ayrton Badovini gear up for Round 3 of the 2013 eni FIM World Superbike Championship taking place on the Dutch track starting tomorrow. During Round 2, in Aragon, the Ducati Alstare team was able to limit the damage on one of the most challenging tracks for the Ducati 1199 Panigale. With the goal being to collate as much data as possible for future races, Carlos Checa and Ayrton Badovini also scored their first championship points, with a seventh, eighth and two tenth place finishes between them.

An Assen race winner in 2011, Checa has reached the podium on several other occasions in recent years, including last season when three Ducatis, including Checa's bike, occupied the rostrum in Race 1. Badovini has competed with a Superbike at the Dutch track on three previous occasions, his best result being a seventh place finish last year.

    Carlos Checa:

"I hope that the tests we carried out in Jerez after the race in Aragon bear fruit this weekend at Assen. Those two days were very important and in The Netherlands, on a track that is traditionally less problematic for the Ducati, maybe we'll be able to make some good progress. I feel fit and healthy but the unknown at Assen is always the weather - I've seen some wet forecasts already so we need to work to be prepared come Sunday, whatever the conditions."
    Ayrton Badovini:

"I've been up up at my parents' place and working with my personal trainer during the last days, so I should be stronger when I get to Assen. It's a track that I like, and where I hope we'll suffer a little less as far as the riding characteristics of the bike are concerned. I'm feeling confident, also because during the recent tests at Jerez we identified a few things that weren't working with my riding style and we started to understand what I prefer etc. So in Assen we'll have a clearer idea as to how to prepare my bike."

    Pata Honda targeting Dutch delight

The Pata Honda team is heading to The Netherlands for this weekend's third round World Superbike championship races at the TT Circuit Assen. It's only a short journey to the circuit for the Dutch team, which is based at the Ten Kate workshops in Nieuwleusen, just 60km to the south.

Both Pata Honda riders like the flowing Assen track and have enjoyed podium success there in recent years, with Jonathan Rea having taken at least one race win for the team in each of his last three visits to the historic 4.542km circuit.

Leon Haslam has enjoyed three World Superbike podiums of his own at Assen in recent years, including a double, with second and third-place finishes, in his last races on a Honda in 2009.

    Jonathan Rea:
"I'm looking forward to getting back on track there after our busy testing build-up to the last round in Spain. The boys have done a lot of work since Aragon and looked at a lot of data, so we've hopefully got a few new settings to try this weekend, especially around the throttle connection. We'll start with free practice on Friday to try and turn it into a competitive package for two 22-lap races on Sunday. I hope the weather is a bit more consistent than it was last season but it would certainly be nice to get another good result at Assen."
    Leon Haslam:

"I'm really looking forward to getting on the bike again at Assen as we know that it goes well there from Johnny's results here. I like Assen, too, and finished twice on the podium the last time I was here on the Honda CBR. We made a lot of progress with the bike during our testing in Spain but it was unfortunate that we had some issues which affected our race weekend at Aragon. Assen has corner characteristics that suit our chassis and there's no long straight, so we're hoping for better results this time out."

    WSBK riders learn new tricks

The World Superbike riders are famous all over the world for their spectacular manoeuvres on track, but the challenge some of them had to face today went beyond their knowledge of riding on two wheels. World level bike trial rider Rick Koekoek, who lives in Hoogeveen, 40km from TT Assen Circuit, held a Master Class of the discipline to a selection of WSBK riders: Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia Racing Team), Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad GoldBet), Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) and Leon Haslam (Pata Honda World Superbike) representing the eni FIM Superbike World Championship, Kenan Sofuoglu (Mahi Racing Team India Kawasaki), home riders Michael van der Mark (Pata Honda World Supersport) and wild-card Kevin van Leuven (United Gebben Racing) for the Supersport World Championship and Tony Covena (Nito Racing Kawasaki) for the Superstock 600 European Championship.

At the SBK Paddock Show, Rick Koekoek first demonstrated his own bike trial skills and then taught the basics to his one-time students. The award for the best bike trial rookie went to Leon Haslam, the only one able to perform every increasingly-difficult task required by Rick Koekoek. All riders were on the stage afterwards for a quick interview session.

Interview with Sam Lowes, winner at Assen

Sam Lowes' first race win of 2013 - the 3rd of his career in the series - came at the right time and meant a big boost in his self-confidence. The Yakhnich Motorsport Team rider successful last-lap manoeuvre on Kenan Sofuoglu at Assen marked a significantly different race approach for the young Brit and a good display of race craft. Despite the still injured left hand and wrist Lowes is looking forward to the Monza round knowing he has what it takes for another epic battle up front. In 2011 Lowes rode with multiple fractures in his left collarbone and finished the race with an amazing 5th place.

After the unfortunate Aragon round, you had the perfect race at Assen. How do you feel?

"Yes Aragon was upsetting but we still took away lots of positives as I was fast all weekend and looking to win the race, but coming to Assen - having never finished a race there - I was nervous, but to take pole position and win was a great feeling and again we were able to show our speed. I'm very happy."

You made a successful last-lap move on the defending Champion for the win. Was it important for you to show you can defeat him in a final lap battle?

"Well I think that, in any battle or situation, to come out on top is important. I have a lot of respect for Kenan and he always fights hard every race. I feel I'm in the best position in my career right now and I want to take the fight to him, for the title. For this it was very important. I believe a lot in myself and know I can be there all the way through the season."

Did you actually let him past during the race so he had to lead?

"Yes, because I need to still learn a lot and one big area is my race craft. Kenan often sets a solid pace all race or lets others lead, then ups the pace in the last 3 laps and pushes hard for victory. In the past I have just tried to lead and ride every lap too hard, and then I fell short towards the end. Now I'm in a good place, I understand more my previous mistakes and I am confident in myself, my team and my bike in order to be relaxed in the races and always have a plan."

                How is your hand now?

"Not too bad. I never like to make excuses but Aragon was very hard and in Assen, too, but once I put the helmet on I can forget about the pain and concentrate on what I need to do. My main problem is that both hand and wrist are weak, so change of direction becomes difficult."

Next round is Monza, a demanding track especially under braking. Are you going to be fine fitness wise?

"Yes I have raced there with injury before! I will be fine, again we have a small gap so it will improve again from Assen."

How's going with the team? You seem to be as concentrated and relaxed as ever.

"My new team is fantastic and I'm very happy. I had a very good team in PTR for my first 2 seasons in World Supersport, but I'm really enjoying being part of Yakhnich Motorsport and riding a Yamaha. We all get along well and talk about things a lot over the race weekend. We are happy with how it's going and I couldn't ask for better people to work with. We all know and believe in our goal, which is to try and win the title this season. So we are working harder and harder every time."

Davies looks for a better position ahead of Monza

Straight after the race weekend at Dutch track, Assen, BMW Motorrad factory rider Chaz Davies flew directly to Munich. There, the factory rider of the BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team spent the afternoon in the wind tunnel of the BMW Group. With the next round of the 2013 eni FIM Superbike World Championship being held at Monza, Davies worked on aerodynamically optimising his riding position on his BMW S 1000 RR. This is the same process that his team mate Marco Melandri completed last year when he rode his first season on the RR. With simulated speeds up to 240 km/h, the Welshman, who stands at 1.83 metres tall, tried several different positions and body angles in order to find the ones that minimise the drag as much as possible.

"It was a really interesting afternoon", Davies confirms. "When testing on a track, you try new development parts and different settings but you are not working on your body. So it was great to experience in a stable environment with my riding position, to move myself around on the bike, to have elbows and shoulders in different positions and to then see in the data what difference it makes. I have learnt that I have to try and get myself inside the bike sooner on the exit of the corner in order to reduce the drag and be faster on the straights."
"It was good to see what difference that will make", he continues "if we can improve that for the next race. Especially on a track like Monza, the aerodynamic efficiency is very important because every lap we are wide open for much longer than any other circuit on the calendar. Having the right riding position helps me to make best use of the powerful BMW engine on the straights."

                  Q&A with Eugene Laverty

WorldSBK.com spoke to Race 2 winner at Assen Eugene Laverty (Aprilia Racing Team). The Irishman, after the nightmare Sunday of the second round, was able to bounce back to achieve a well deserved victory - after a tight race - over Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team), who dominated Race 1. Laverty, who lies now 2nd in the standings, 28 points behind team mate Sylvain Guintoli and tied with Tom Sykes and Chaz Davies, is now looking forward to the next round, scheduled for May 10-12 at Monza's Autodromo Nazionale. The Italian venue saw Eugene Laverty scoring his maiden race victory in the series - a double win at the end of the day - in 2011, in what was his rookie WSBK season.

How happy were you about being back on the top step of the podium after all that happened at Aragon?

"It was really important to leave Assen with two results following a double non-finish at Aragon. Race one in Assen was fairly average, but to bounce back with a victory in race two was a shock even to me! Tom Sykes on the Kawasaki seemed unstoppable all weekend but we made a big change to the bike between races and it paid off. The Aprilia RSV4 had never won before at Assen and was seen to be a bogey track for the bike. It really did feel like we'd achieved the impossible because Tom had won race one by almost ten seconds."

In Race 2 you did an amazing job by staying with Tom and then get to the lead with three laps to go up to the finish line. Was that your plan from early on in the race, to wait until the final laps?

"For the first few laps my aim was only to stay with Tom and get away from the chasing pack. After some laps I began to realise that in actual fact I could fight with him for the victory. I began to make a plan and decided on it a few laps before I made the overtake. I only had two passing places as Tom was riding so strong but I made the pass stick and fended him off for the last few laps."

Your team mate is still in the lead but you, Tom and Chaz are following at -28. How do you see the battle for title victory shaping up?

"It's very exciting for the Championship. My teammate Sylvain has had a great run of form and has finished every race. On the other hand Tom, Chaz, and I have all had at least one non-finish so it will take a few more rounds for the title chase to take shape. Marco Melandri has had a tough start to the season but we cannot rule him out."

Monza brings good memories to you from 2011. Are you looking forward to the round? What's your opinion on the track?

"Monza has always been kind to me. I won the World Supersport race in 2010 and then I achieved a double victory in 2011. Unfortunately last year the weather played havoc but I'm hopeful that the rain will stay away this time so that we can enjoy some great racing. The Aprilia engine is very strong on top speed so I feel that we should be right at the sharp end."

Rea to be joined by Akiyoshi as Haslam targets Donington return

Jonathan Rea completed a two-day test at the TT Circuit Assen in The Netherlands on Thursday following his podium at the circuit last weekend in race one of the third-round 2013 eni FIM World Superbike championship event. The 26-year-old Pata Honda rider from Northern Ireland got through a lot of work on his Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade, including the testing of a new fuel tank to optimise weight distribution and aerodynamics.

However, Rea completed his Assen Superbike test without team-mate Leon Haslam who is recuperating from a broken leg sustained in a practice crash at Assen last Friday. The 29-year-old British rider had an operation to pin his left tibia on Sunday and is optimistic about an early return to action.

Unfortunately, Haslam will miss next week's fourth-round World Superbike event at Monza in Italy and the Pata Honda team has announced that he will be replaced for the two races by Japanese rider Kousuke Akiyoshi. Akiyoshi rides a CBR1000RR Fireblade in the All Japan Superbike championship, a series that he is currently leading and which he won in 2010 and 2011. The 38-year-old from Kurume in Japan is also a three-time Suzuka 8-hours winner, most recently in 2012 with Jonathan Rea.

                  Jonathan Rea:
It's been a good test and we made some positive progress with traction control and throttle opening, which allows me to get on the gas earlier with more confidence. We also made some positive suspension changes at the rear, which keeps the bike more stable as I open the throttle, and we made improvements in other areas, too. I felt like it's the first test this season where we've actually been able to make refinements to the bike, rather than get basic things sorted, and that's very positive. I was really happy with the lap times, too - not just for the sake of a fast lap but because of how the time is coming, which is more comfortable now. I'm looking forward to seeing Akiyoshi-san again and to welcoming him to my team, rather than the other way round. I think we can learn a lot from his experience as a development rider because I've ridden both the RC213V and the Suzuka 8-hour bikes that he's worked on, and I know how good they are.
                  Leon Haslam:
I've just been chilling since I got out of hospital, really. I saw my physiotherapist on Thursday and we're getting a plan together but we need to wait for the swelling to go down before we can get to work. I'm back to see the doctor next week and get the staples out of the leg - then I can start some pool work, too. It's a shame to be missing Monza, but the following race at Donington Park is my target to come back. It will be good to get Akiyoshi on the bike next week though. His feedback will be useful and Monza shouldn't be too difficult for him to learn.

Tom Sykes speeding up to Monza

Kawasaki Racing Team Tom Sykes is looking forward to taking part in the annual visit to the super-fast Monza circuit, aiming for the kind of excellent result he enjoyed at Assen. Sykes posted a convincing race one win at the previous round in the Netherlands and then followed that up with a second place in race two, results which put him in a strong position revisit a circuit he won at in 2012 on his official Ninja ZX-10R.

With improvements evident Kawasaki Racing Team's official machines in this year's SBK fight Sykes is out to move on from the joint second place he holds in the points table going into Monza. He is tied on the same total as two other riders after three rounds and six individual races, with Sykes sitting 28 points behind the lead at this early stage of proceedings.

                      Tom Sykes:

"I am obviously very motivated off the back of the Assen weekend. Our bike is working great and the changes made to the bike this year look like they are having the desired effect across the board. Moving to Monza now, I am looking forward to it because I won the only race there last year. It is a circuit I enjoy because of some good past results and it is nice to ride as well because it has a great history. The Ninja ZX-10R is a very well balanced package and we are going there to do a job now. The championship position is very unusual with three riders on the same points in second place, although I am not too concerned with the championship placings at this stage. I'm just looking forward to keeping up momentum and improving things again in a couple of areas."

Supersport riders to mix it up front at Monza

Following the close two-way battle at Assen, Sam Lowes (Yakhnich Motorsport Yamaha) and Kenan Sofuoglu (Mahi Racing Team India Kawasaki) will be back on the track that saw both riders completing the podium behind race winner - and now World Superbike rookie - Jules Cluzel. The reigning Champion from Turkey, scored his only victory so far at Monza in 2007 (his first title season).

Championship leader Fabien Foret (Mahi Racing Team India Kawasaki), known for not being at ease on wet track conditions, hopes to find good weather to score another positive result on a favourable track for the French veteran - who won in 2002 and 2008, was 2nd in 2007 and 3rd in 2009 and 2011.

2nd place in the standings Michael van der Mark (Pata Honda World Supersport) has never managed - in the two years racing STK600 - to achieve a podium finish at Monza. Team mate Lorenzo Zanetti, on the other hand, scored his first and only victory in 2011 by finishing the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup race with just 0.065 seconds margin over Davide Giugliano (title winner at the end of the year).

Roberto Rolfo (ParkinGo MV Agusta Corse) has bad memories of his home-track from 2007, when he was racing with Honda in the Superbike class. Italian was forced to pull in from race 1 during the final lap, while he was in 2nd place.

Heroic win by Sam Lowes in Supersport race

Sam Lowes (Yakhnich Motorsport Yamaha) did an almost impossible overtaking manoeuvre on the last lap of World Supersport race to get his 2nd win of the season and becoming the new Championship leader. The 23 year old from Lincoln had a fantastic drive out of Turn 4 to pass all three riders ahead of him at the following chicane.

Lowes got quickly a small margin on the chasing pack to cross the line in 1st place ahead of Florian Marino (Intermoto Ponyexpres Kawasaki), Lorenzo Zanetti (Pata Honda World Supersport) and Riccardo Russo (Puccetti Racing Kawasaki). The top-5 in today's race, completed by Kev Coghlan (DMC-Racing Kawasaki) put up an outstanding battle throughout all 10 laps.

Reigning Champion Kenan Sofuoglu (Mahi Racing Team India Kawasaki) lost the front at Turn 8 during the 4th lap of the race, while he was on the lead. Team mate Fabien Foret didn't take part to the race after being involved in the multiple crash at Turn 1 that brought to a third red flag - and eventually led to the decision of postponing the Supersport race after World Superbike race 2. Similar misfortune for "Rookie" Michael van Der Mark (Pata Honda World Supersport) who - like Foret's - is currently undergoing medical checks.

Laverty takes Race 2 win to close on Championship lead

Eugene Laverty (Aprilia Racing Team) has taken revenge over Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad GoldBet) after first race defeat for the win to achieve a crucial victory in Eni FIM Superbike World Championship Race 2 at Monza. The Irishman grabbed the lead on the penultimate lap and defended the position from a competitive Melandri, who set the fastest lap of the race right before the chequered flag in 1'42.379.

With his 3rd race win of 2013, Laverty equals the same number of victories achieved in the past two seasons to close the gap on the Championship leader Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia Racing Team) to 13 points, with Tom Sykes 3rd at 18 points from the top.

The Kawasaki Racing Team rider completed the podium ahead of Guintoli, as both riders were part of the 4-way battle that characterised most of the 18-lap race.

5th place for Michel Fabrizio (Red Devils Roma Aprilia), after a close battle with Davide Giugliano (Althea Racing Aprilia). Both riders had to face a strong Chaz Davies, up until the Welshman lost the front at Turn 5 during lap 12, and a fierce Leon Camier (FIXI Crescent Suzuki), 7th at the flag.

Melandri wins an incredibly close Race 1

Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad GoldBet) is the winner of a thrilling and ultra-close Race 1 at Monza's Autodromo Nazionale, following a spectacular and highly entertained battle throughout the 18 laps.

The 11th race win for the home rider - his maiden on the Italian track - was a perfect display of racecraft, as Melandri entered the final lap in 3rd position and immediately overtook Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) at Turn 1, then made a successful move on Eugene Laverty (Aprilia Racing Team) for the lead. The works Aprilia Rider regained first position at the "Ascari" chicane, but the eventual winner was not happy with second place and got along the inside of the Irishman at the last turn, while Sykes tried to take advantage to snatch the victory over both rivals.

The three riders crossed the line side by side, with Melandri winning by 0.085 seconds over Tom Sykes and by 0.107 seconds on Eugene Laverty. Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia Racing Team) was part of the contention for the win but lost ground in the closing stages to finish 4th. The Frenchman is still the Championship leader, 21 points ahead of Sykes and 25 on Laverty.

5th place for Chaz Davies (BMW Motorrad GoldBet), ahead of Michel Fabrizio (Red Devils Roma Aprilia) - who made his way up to sixth position following a difficult start - and Loris Baz (Kawasaki Racing Team).

Race 1 saw a new average speed record for the Superbike World Championship (201,814 km/h): the previous one was set in 2000 at Hockenheim (Race 1 - 201,330 km/h).
