Vd Mark to join Haslam for recovery until Donington Park

Pata Honda rider Michael van der Mark will be joining Superbike team mate Leon Haslam for recuperation ahead of World Supersport Round 5 at Donington Park, scheduled for next week. The The 20 year old Dutchman sustained four broken bones in his left foot in the last of the three incidents that brought Monza's Supersport race to a red flag situation. Van der Mark was forced to miss the final re-start and had to sit out the race.

        Michael van der Mark -
"I'm flying to UK tonight and join Leon Haslam until Donington Park" "I'll be using the hyperbaric chamber and do physiotherapy to speed up the healing and recover as much as possible before the next round. It won't be an easy weekend, not only for the injury but also for the fact that I've never raced there, so I will have to learn the track. I'm confident everything will be OK, though, and I'm looking forward to be back on track."

Appeal lodged by Aprilia Racing Team & Sylvain Guintoli

Following the decision taken by the FIM Stewards at the World Superbike race 2 in Monza (Italy) on 12 May to cancel the drop of position sanction imposed by the Race Direction on rider Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team), the Aprilia Racing Team and rider Sylvain Guintoli lodged an appeal with the FIM International Disciplinary Court within the time limit (5 days).

The International Disciplinary Court will deal with this case in due time.

BMW riders head to Donington with some good memories

For the 5th round of the 2013 eni FIM Superbike World Championship the BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team heads to a track which plays an important role in the history of BMW Motorrad. The British "Donington Park Circuit" is the venue not only of the first ever victory, but also the first ever one-two for the German manufacturer in World Superbike.

Melandri enjoyed some of the most joyful moments of his WSBK career Donington Park, not only by giving BMW their first victory ever in the Championship last year in Race 1, but also by scoring his maiden win in the series in 2011. Despite the eventful final-turn elimination last time out, Melandri is still eagerly awaiting the racing weekend on the 4023m Leicestershire track.

            Marco Melandri -

"I really love Donington" "Here I got my first Superbike win with Yamaha in 2011 and the first victory in the history of BMW in the series last year. This is a technical track, quite different from Monza: in Donington you never shift to sixth gear while in Monza you use it three times. The two chicanes in the last part of the Donington circuit seem to be there to keep the field close together. The race will be very open and hard-fought, and if it does not rain, it will be very exciting.

We head to Donington in a better position than last year, even if we did not have a perfect start to the season. In Monza I found the right feeling with the RR. Now I can ride it in the best way and be competitive. I'm looking forward to Donington and I feel really confident. Now I want to fight for the podium at every race and, when it's possible, I want to win."
Chaz Davies has fond memories of Donington Park as well, since it was the first "real circuit" he rode on when he was still a kid. In what is the first of two home rounds for the Welsh rider, Davies aims to fight back for podium positions:

"I am looking forward to my first home round. It is always good to meet up with friends and family and to feel the support of your home crowd. Donington was the first proper circuit I rode on, so I have special memories of it - especially the first part of the circuit is enjoyable. To go through ‘Craner Curves' is quite a challenge. Overall, there are two completely different styles of track. You have the fast first part and then the hard braking second part so it is difficult to find a compromise with the set-up. I hope that we will have a smooth and normal weekend. I will try to do a good qualifying and then we will see. Marco was very fast there last year, so the team should have some good data to start with."

            Q&A with Kev Coghlan

Following an encouraging 5th place in the previous race at Monza, Kev Coghlan (DMC-Lorenzini Kawasaki) is looking forward to the upcoming event at Donington Park, the first of two home rounds for the WSS rookie. The last time out for the Scotsman on the Leicestershire circuit was in 2009, when he raced onboard a Yamaha YZF-R6 in for the last 5 rounds of the World Supersport season.

How happy were you on the top-5 finish in Monza?

"Monza was great! It's another track that I've not raced for a while, since 2008 I think, so I was surprised to be so competitive straight from the first day. As for the race, I think in the final stint I did what I could, I lost a bit of ground a few laps in and just couldn't bridge the gap to the leaders again. I was closing to the lead in the end but I just ran out of laps. It's my best result of the season so far so generally I'm happy with how it went."

A good result after a difficult start of 2013, especially result-wise.

"My season so far has gotten off to a bumpy start, with two crashes in the first two races. It's clear that I could have had a lot more points on the board by now, but we are starting to get some steady finishes now. To be honest I never expected to be so close to the front, at least not this early in the season."

Are you looking forward to Donington Park?

"I'm really looking forward to it. A few years since I last ride there but it's always been somewhere I loved riding, as it's a great old school natural circuit. Whether I'll be fast or not I don't really know, but I'll definitely have fun!"

Donington Park – the pre-round statistics

WorldSBK.com provides you with some interesting facts and figures about Round 5 of the eni FIM Superbike World Championship at Donington Park.

Sylvain Guintoli last year was 8th and 5th, while two years ago he was twice eleventh, slowed down by pain in his right hand and left ankle, broken in the opening race in Phillip Island.

Very little luck for Eugene Laverty in Donington: in 2011 he fell on the fourth lap and was 14th in Race 2 (setup problems), while last year he had a technical issue which relegated him in 15th place in Race 1, crashing out in the following race. He was 5th in the 2009 Supersport race.

Double podium (two thirds) from pole here last year for Tom Sykes, who scored his maiden podium in this track, back in 2008, Race 1, second after a "virtual" fight with Troy Bayliss, as the race was interrupted and they were running on aggregate times.

Marco Melandri always hit the spotlight in Donington: winner (maiden win) and second in the 2011 races, last year won Race 1 (maiden BMW win) and in Race 2 he was running second when he was involved in the Rea-Haslam clash: Leon was hit by Rea and fell, hitting Marco's bike, which in turn went into the ground.

Chaz Davies was twelfth and seventh in last year's races. In 2011 he lost for only two tenths of a second the Supersport race, won by Luca Scassa.

Loris Baz debuted in Superbike here last year, replacing Joan Lascorz: he was able to score his maiden points, finishing eighth in race two.

Michel Fabrizio scored points in eight of his ten races here, climbing on the podium in 2009 in Race 2 in 3rd. Last year he was 10th in Race 1 and 13th in Race 2, after a ride through for a jump start.

Jonathan Rea was the winner of one of the most controversial races in Superbike history, when he climbed on the top step of the podium in Race 2 last year.

Davide Giugliano last year was 7th in race one and retired for an accident triggered by Checa in Race 2. He was 6th in the Supersport race in 2007, won by Kenan Sofuoglu.

The best weekend for Leon Camier in Donington came two years ago, when he was 8th in Race 1 and third in Race 2. He always scored points here: his worst result under the chequered flag was a 13th in race one in 2009 as wildcard. Last year Jules Cluzel was the pole-sitter of the Supersport race, but he was 3rd at the flag.

Four Superbike races for Max Neukirchner in Donington: in 2007 he was 8th and 10th, while in 2008 he fell in R in the wet race and suffered setup problems in race two, ending up 14th.

Six Superbike races for Ayrton Badovini in Donington: his best result came last year, when he was 6th in Race 2.

The best weekend for Carlos Checa in Donington was the one of his Championship-winning season, 2011: he scored pole and was 3rd in Race 1, winning the following in dominant fashion.

Two second places, both in grid and in the races for Leon Haslam in Donington: he was 2nd on the grid both last year and two years ago, beaten by Sykes and Checa, and was second in Race 2 in 2009 and in Race 1 last year. Haslam won both British Superbike races in 2007.

Fully confident Sykes targets home round podium

Tom Sykes heads to Donington Park for his home round this weekend filled with the expectation of strong results at a venue that should offer good opportunities to the Kawasaki Racing Team rider. Sykes was pleased by how well his Ninja ZX-10R performed at the ultra high-speed circuit of Monza last time out and at Donington, a track which he believes is even more suited to his machine's wide ranging performance package, the Englishman has every reason to be confident approaching his local event.

With the championship now getting tighter in terms of points spread between the leaders Sykes is now only 18 points from the very top, having won a race at Assen and taken five podium finishes from the eight races so far.

                  Tom Sykes -

"I am really looking forward to Donington" "Monza for me was one of the hardest circuits we should have gone to, even though we won there last year, but we got on the podium twice. Donington is a flowing, twisting circuit so I am looking forward to riding my Ninja ZX-10R there. There are no real straights so it should be really good. It has always been a favourite of mine and I am very excited to go there with a fast and consistent package on the bike. I have led races at Donington in the past and we have been able to make good laps even at the end of races this year at a variety of different tracks, so I am really looking forward to Donington because it should be a nice one for me and the bike."

WSBK riders set for another epic battle at Donington Park

The eni FIM Superbike World Championship gets to the heart of England for Round 5 at Donington Park. The British venue was built in the ‘30s of the last century and saw a new life in the 1970s, becoming one of the most famous tracks for motorcycle racing in the world. Donington Park hosted the first ever World Superbike Round on April 3rd 1988, with pole position scored by local rider Roger Burnett on a Honda.

British riders always had a strong connection to their home round, but rarely got on top step of the podium in recent times. In 2012 Jonathan Rea (Pata Honda World Superbike) was the first rider from the UK to win a race at Donington Park after four years - before him, James Toseland was the last to score a victory (2007, race 1). Rea won one of the most unpredictable races of all time, settled at the very last turn of the race, after a collision with Leon Haslam and a consequent "domino effect" that involved Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad GoldBet), who had previously tried to overtake Haslam, too - team mate at the time - for the race win.

Local boy Leon Haslam, now back with the Honda family for 2013, is still recovering from the leg injury he sustained at Assen almost a month ago, and he's trying his best in order to take part in his home Round.

Despite the thrilling finale in 2012, Melandri has fond memories of the last weekend out on the Leicestershire circuit, as the Italian managed to give BMW their maiden World Superbike win in race 1. Works BMW rider Chaz Davies seeks redemption at Donington Park, following two difficult rounds at both Assen and Monza.

Aprilia Racing Team duo of Sylvain Guintoli and Eugene Laverty, who currently lie 1st and 2nd in Riders standings, have never scored a top-3 on the East-Midlands track. Laverty crashed in 2 out of his 4 WSBK races there, while Guintoli best result is a 5th place in last year's race 2.

Tom Sykes' (Kawasaki Racing Team) best result dates back to 2008, when he raced as a wildcard from BSB and finished with a sensational 2nd place in the aggregate race 1 results, behind Troy Bayliss. Team mate Loris Baz made his debut in WSBK last year at Donington, as substitute for the unfortunate Joan Lascorz. FIXI Crescent Suzuki Leon Camier scored his only WSBK podium finish at the British venue in 2011 (3rd place, race 2), but won race 1 two years before, in his winning British Superbike season.

An uncatchable Sam Lowes (Yakhnich Motorsport Yamaha) has won by domination the World Supersport race today at Donington Park. The local rider has put up a supreme performance to finish with an 11 seconds margin over 2nd place Kenan Sofuoglu (Mahi Racing Team India Kawasaki) and amusing the crowd with a spectacular wheelie over the finish line.

Lowes lapped consistently within the 1'31 seconds bracket throughout all the 23 laps - except the final one - an incredible pace that couldn't be matched by the chasing pack. Sofuoglu, although, had to face some tough challenge to get in 2nd place but once he did, the defending Champion could easily pull away for a lonely ride to the chequered flag. The Turkish rider was also involved in a collision with Christian Iddon early in the race at "Melbourne" hairpin (Lap 2) that forced him to run wide and lose some ground.

Roberto Rolfo (Parkingo MV Agusta Corse) scored a sensational 3rd for the Italian brand, that was last seen on a World Championship podium in 1976: that time was Giacomo Agostini to win the 500cc race at Nurburgring. Rolfo put up an outstanding recover from a 15th slot start on the grid to give Giuliano Rovelli's squad the first rostrum finish in Supersport since Portimao 2011.

Fourth place for Lorenzo Zanetti (Pata Honda World Supersport) ahead of fellow Italian Luca Scassa (Intermoto Ponyexpres Kawasaki). The two riders battled out in the final lap with the Honda rider able to overtake the former Italian Superbike Champion at the chicane to eventually defend his position up to the flag, despite a fantastic last-turn attempt by Scassa.

The rider from Arezzo had earlier in the race a collision at the exit of "Goddards" with team mate Florian Marino, after which the Frenchman crashed out finishing on a bad not a promising race. 6th place for Jack Kennedy (Rivamoto Honda), ahead of Sheridan Morais (PTR Honda) and Andrea Antonelli (Team Goeleven Kawasaki).
