  • No pillion!! Says Delhi Police!

    No parking near 470 sites
No Pillion Riding Near These Places, Say Cops After LG Meet

New Delhi: Hours after the attack on two foreign tourists outside the historic Jama Masjid, Delhi Police came out with a list of 470 sites where security has been upgraded and restrictions imposed.

All such sites will have no parking within 100 metres. Also bikers with pillion riders will not be allowed anywhere near them. The decisions were taken as part of special security measures being implemented on the directions of the lieutenantgovernor of Delhi.

Reacting to the incident at Jama Masjid which has led to a scare in the city, the lieutenant-governor, Tejendra Khanna, held an emergency meeting with the police commissioner, YS Dadwal, and senior officials of the agencies concerned to take stock of the situation on Sunday.

The meeting discussed the law and order situation and saw the LG issue directions to the CP to introduce special security measures with immediate effect. A senior official pointed out that there are 470 sites which have been identified as sensitive or high-risk in the city.

Thus the first step towards taking special measures to enhance security would be to put these points under strict vigil.

Delhi Police said they have also asked the officials at these places to install CCTVs since they are high on the list of possible targets for a terror attack.

‘‘The security on premises have to be beefed up and we have asked them to deploy armed guards wherever required. We have also intensified patrolling and deployment at vital installations,’’ added a police officer.

On the allegations made by the Shahi Imam and others at Jama Masjid that the requisite security measures were not in place despite reminders to the police, senior officials refused to comment. However, the LG’s office said that letters had been written time and again to religious institutions like Jama Masjid, Akshardham temple and others asking them to make security arrangements like CCTV cameras.

Some of the heritage sites where these curbs will now apply are Qutab Minar, Jama Masjid, Purana Qila, Humanyun’s Tomb, India Gate, Jantar Mantar, Red Fort, Safdarjung Tomb, Delhi Gate, Kashmere Gate, Turkman Gate, Fatehpuri Masjid and Tughlaqabad Fort.

Among vital installations and iconic buildings are Lotus Temple, Akshardham Temple, Kalakji Temple, Jhandewalan Temple, Indian Oil building, Birla Temple, Reserve Bank of India, PTI building, Police headquarters, Shastri Bhavan, Delhi University, Pallika Sadan Kendra, Palika Bazar, NDMC building, Connaught Place and Safdarjung Airport.

These restrictions are going to cause a lot of inconvenience for people in the city and could also lead to police highhandedness. Two-wheeler drivers have always been the favourite whipping boys of the cops only at the check-posts.

P.S.: We are the law abiding citizen. We would love to see the games going smoothly with no terror attacks during or even after the attacks and i am sure everybody would cooperate with the authorities to maintain law and order situation. But, No pillion??? This is a bit too much, a knee-jerk reaction IMO. They came, they fired, and they vanished - now DP is going to harass its favorite punching bag - the two-wheeler riders.

this is like saying "YOU HAVE SWINE FLU SO STOP GOING ANYWHERE EVEN THE DOCTOR"

i mean for security, restrictions in are ok but why for bikers??

do they want to convey that in our 15 kg saddlebags, we can possibly carry more explosives than the terrorists in their m 800s ??
and what problem are they having with the pillion???

What is the police coming upto?? its easier to check bikers than any car.. even the dumbest of a kid will tell them this.. dont they have even a bit of common sense??

Soft targets we are for them....

They haven't got guts to stop big cars with pitch black windows, cars they can't even see inside if someone with a Bazooka is sitting inside aiming at them!!

@ all of them who replied negatively: can you suggest a better way or plan to maintain secirity and saftey in the CWG area where if some forigner is hurt or dead our nations pride will be spoiled badly infront of the international community.

Even if the approach of the police is not to be a praise worthy one, I feel atleast they have done this much to assure saftey, without the general 'chalta hai' attitude in our governemt official. (even after the rule is passed let us see how many of the officers will ensure to enforce it!)

bikers are anytime soft targets everywhere in India...
its a major inconvenience for us.
here in Mumbai they have started a new drama from a month now..
almost every biker is stopped and inspected, with writing of their name and number, bike's reg no, time and license num in their book, and as many times you pass through that road, its done again and again, they are creating a log kinda stuff..
its annoying when at times 100's of bikers are blocking the road, they don't even check the cars..
                  they call that SECURITY PURPOSES....
at a time i was riding for 20 kms from one end to another and at 4 places this happened !!
they are doing it even worse in delhi, but nothing happened here so far..

In Delhi, bigger the car, bigger the traffic violation.
Ofcourse, the poor traffic policemen cannot dare to stop them - and for a reason. He doesn't want an encounter with the "Jaanta hai mai/mera baap kaun hai" type of people.

If the police believes that there is a threat from bikes, the threat from cars is bigger. I don't support this "no pillion" move but considering that its for that stupid CWG, can tolerate it for 11 days.
However, where are the concrete steps to check cars?
The most famous terrorist (non bomb blast) attack in Delhi remains the parliament attack in 2001, and terrorists had used a car.

Who creates such rules?? I have noticed most of the terrorist that are seen on camera generally wear pants while doing the terror act. This must be helping them to conceal their weapons and artillery. So how about a new rule:

                        No pants in public!

Lets go full monty to show we are not really terrorist.

It's pathetic to see that country is being held by the balls by some terror groups, and all our authorities can think of are such rules that harass the small fish.

The easiest way to work around an incident is to take a simple but unsubstantial step towards it,, thats what Delhi Traffic Police has done... Just to remind you, most of the CWG venues are around residential & Commercial areas where "we" middle class people work. Most of us only have a 2-wheeler to commute & people who are married or have siblings/friends who commute to same or nearby place of work or whatever will have real problems.. did they consider this before putting up this slouchy rule. Even if you have a car it's better to take the bike out coz of the manic traffic jams this rain has given Delhi this year.!!

I invite you to come and get a taste of Delhi traffic this rainy season for a week...

Such restrictions clearly shows a desperate attempt to safeguard the capital in jiffy. Nothing is done with a future/long term vision, be it anything and that's why incidents and restrictions have become part of our lifes.

Its not that foreign nationals have never been attacked in India before, but the crime city this time is CWG hosting capital and such stupid and weak safety measures are just ridiculous. As another negative side, such continuous unfavourable steps might incline more 2-wheeler users to switch to cheap cars and make Delhi the worst choked capital to drive/ride.
