  • Rahul mulls return to scooter manufacturing, Rajiv says 'No'

Bajaj Auto Chairman Rahul Bajaj may want the firm to re-enter the scooter segment considering the revival of market, but his son and Managing Director Rajiv Bajaj says at the moment the company will focus only on bikes.
"At the moment, we have a clear and sharp focus -- the global motorcycle market," Rajiv Bajaj told PTI.

He was responding to comments made by the Senior Bajaj that it made sense for the company to manufacture scooters which can give the firm a market share of 20% and a reasonably good EBIDTA.

When asked if the company will start making scooters again, Rahul Bajaj said "maybe", but directed the question to his son Rajiv, keeping his stated position that he no longer took decisions.

In December 2009, the company had announced that it would stop making scooters by end of 2009-10 fiscal, thus bringing down the curtains on 'Hamara Bajaj', which revolutionised the two-wheeler market in the country.

At that time, Rajiv Bajaj had said the company didn't see much sense in making scooters as the segment didn't sell according to its expectations.
"If we are to be a motorcycle specialist, we cannot make scooters," he had said then.

Since then, the scooter market has witnessed significant growth, led by gearless scooters from by Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India, which is the market leader in the segment now.

In the April-January period this fiscal, the Indian scooter market has witnessed a growth of 46.57% at 16,97,204 units as against 11,57,902 units in the comparable period last fiscal, as per Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers Association (SIAM) data.

Bajaj Auto on the other hand has focussed its attention on motorcycles, offering a range of models such as Discover, Pulsar and even increased stake in Austrian bikemaker KTM Power Sports AG to nearly 38.09% as it looks to expand presence globally.

Bajaj Auto and KTM have been jointly developing products and the first of the co-developed products, KTM Duke 125, will hit European markets this year. The KTM models are supposed to be launched in India during the second half this year.

In the April-January period this fiscal, the company sold 19,89,377 bikes in the domestic market as against 14,11,259 units in the same period last year, up 40.96%.
Bajaj Auto's export during the period has also grown by 35.78% to 8,36,617 units as against 6,16,135 units in the same period an year ago.

Bajaj group mulls return to scooter manufacturing

KOLKATA/ MUMBAI: Bajaj Group appears to be mulling a big-bang return to scooter manufacturing. Group patriarch and chairman Rahul Bajaj dropped a broad hint along these lines on Thursday evening when he told a room full of newsmen that it "makes sense to manufacture scooters which can get us a market share of 20% and a reasonably good EBITA".

However, he was quick to clarify that he no longer took decisions and the matter would have to be addressed by his son Rajiv Bajaj , managing director of Bajaj Auto. "My belief is that Bajaj Auto will manufacture gearless scooters in the next two-three years, sell 20,000 vehicles a month and earn an EBITA of 15-20 % on an annualised basis," he told mediapersons on the sidelines of a private dinner bash where big guns of Kolkata Inc were in attendance.

Bajaj Auto, which dominated the scooter market with brands like Chetak and Super, saw volumes drop to barely a couple of hundreds a month in the 1990s with the advent of motorcycles that were not only more stylish and appealing, but even offered better mileage. The company stopped producing the Chetak three years ago and the last ungeared scooter Crystal rolled out two years back.

Bajaj Auto had never ruled out getting into scooters, said a company executive. The company will be a specialised motorcycle maker and any other launches (such as scooters or three wheelers) will be extensions of the motorcycle business.

The above media brief is from Rahul Bajaj father of Rajiv Bajaj,....at the link I read the following,

KOLKATA/ MUMBAI: Bajaj Group appears to be mulling a big-bang return to scooter manufacturing. Rahul didn't like idea of dropping scooter from it's portfolio, but Rajiv went ahead and sacked scooters as the sales were minuscule, whole drama happened in TV media. There is deficit of communication b/w father and son and is resulting in confusion to all stake holders.

They were not selling even 1000 units of Kristal when Rajiv announced exit from scooters. But it looked like Rajiv intentionally killed Kristal to pursue his strategy of making it big in motorcycles, instead of trying to resurrect it. There were no efforts to save it.. no publicity for kristal except when it got launched and there were no upgrades for it, if I remember correctly.

As of now Bajaj Auto Limited remains the primary manufacturers of Motorcycles only, and even if they introduce scooters, that would be treated as a subsidary business very much like the Bajaj Three Wheelers or Commercial vehicles segment.

what's so tough about it.. they are beating the same Honda & Suzuki left and right in motorcycles market.. when they return (if that happens), i'm sure they can garner healthy market share.
