this was bound to happen, only bajaj and TVS are able to sustain on their own after their Tie-Ups broke....it needs a great deal of self determination and resources to do R & D on its own.

i guess its honda that initiated the break up, why would honda want to share their profits with someone when they have the capability of doing everything on their own

                1. Honda wanted Hero Honda to sell 'Honda' spare parts for Hero Honda bikes and not Hero Honda spares. Hero Honda rejected it as it would put uncertainty over it's group of companies & ancillaries who are producing parts for both OEM and spare markets. Honda did not compromise on this issue.

                2. Honda did not allow HH to export to markets other than SAARC nations. HH saw huge potential in exports, but was pinned down by Honda's stance.

Nevertheless, the divorce has worked out peacefully, even HMSI says it takes about 2020 to beat HH and now HH feels free to test it's strategies, it's a win win for both. Honda made up close to 4000 crores, this money can now offset losses that could arise out of poor sales of cars in Japan and can cover loses due to Tsunami.
HH clearly knows the importance of technology and it also knows developing such technology is not easy especially in short time, it's doing right thing in seeking tech. partner. It's better to borrow than screw up things or keep on trying endlessly for perfection !

+1 to what vipin said. if the right technology is available at a good price, why reinvent the same?

hero group never believed in reinventing the wheel. they simply buy it.

btw, this is ot but most of their "performance bikes" were designed by honda.

the hunk and extreme was designed by someone in italy.

On Hero's part, it's a sensible decision to go with at the moment. But at the same time it's a kind of public declaration, which amounts to saying "we don't have R&D that can create a product, which can rub shoulders with our current line-up". Sooner or later, they will have to take that step and invest heavily in R&D, which is much better for Hero in long-term. I don't see why they have to be afraid/scared of going alone, they already have supply-chain with them who can support with all the possible components for a bike. In this article, they mentioned that they do have a R&D team of 176 engineers, with experience in developing & testing products.

Common Hero go for with Aprilla, Aprilla is yet to lay their eggs in INDIA, so why not have a partnership with them for the indian market and create a new era for Hero who has been so far called as the Cosmetic Magicians of Indian Biking industry,,,,,

HH always gave us the Opening but they did not cope up with the market, for eg

They gave us the first disc braked desi bike
The CBZ 150 but atlast the Pulsars came in and invaded the segment
They gave us the first 200 Above cc bike
The ZMA but atlast again Pulsars came in

There's just one problem.. Hero doesn't want to DEVELOP as a brand over time.. They want results in a far shorter time.. Also, their products have been flawless in terms of reliability all these years ONLY because of Honda.. They fear that if they get their own R&D, then they MIGHT make mistake or two.. And that'll bury their USP.. But it'll be great if they prove the general opinion wrong for once by creating a R&D team..

^ that's a baseless claim. Do you know who is helping Hero in its branding initiative?

"Aprilia" along with "Vespa" is already in India as a part of its parent company Piaggio. Therefore would Piaggio (Aprilia) teaming up with Hero Moto? Unlikely I would say.
