After late night partying on the night of the 2nd day in the esteemed company of eminent personalities of international fame, people like Nate Kurn, Chris Pfeiffer and of course Troy Corser, one wakes up with the feeling of what more can one expect! Lying in bed I briefly contemplated the events of the days before. I had almost not made it to this extraordinary event due to terrible pains of kidney stone. But finally here I was in the middle of the Bavarian Alps having enjoyed some incredible company, met some extraordinary people, reunited with some good friends from BMW Motorrad Munich and heard some good old rock and roll music.

I checked the weather, the rains were abating, the weather was looking more promising and I decided to pack and take my GS out for a spin. The Germans forever more helpful than any other nationality that I have come across, they furnished me with all the required maps, photocopies of places to visit within a radius of 100 kms and I was off with my GS towards the Austrian border.

    Map of the area

As is evident from the map that I crossed in and out of Austria several times while negotiating my way to Lake Plansee and the Neuschwanstein Castle.

Needless to say that the directions given by the hotel staff was not only excellent, but they knew that me being a biker, they gave me the roads that were not straight. People in these countries understand what a biker is looking for. They sent me off on some of the most picturesque surroundings that the country around Garmisch had to offer and on roads that would give a biker great pleasure to ride and move around with ease. Imagine a hotel that gives a helmet visor cleaning solution when you check in!

And then I rode out. I went to Lake Plansee. It was a lovely place to park the bike amongst other bikers, also riding hundreds of kilometres from far flung countries, near a lake with no particular aim or destination but with one common feeling of “bikerness”! I had not installed a GPS guided navigation system on my GS. I was riding from maps and instinct. And whenever I felt lost, the “bikerness” in other bikers helped me find my bearings and my way to wherever I wanted to be headed.

Meeting other bikers from various nationalities at Lake Plansee

Taking the GS through the mountain roads of the German Alps was not something that I had dreamt of doing. But here I was doing it. It is not a bike that one leans around with. But with this bike I could brake mid corner and not worry about it because of the A-arm and the telelever suspension. Not that I needed to but it was comforting to know that I could if the need arose. It was fun riding such a huge motorcycle, seated comfortably snug with heated grips (if I wanted) and riding along with lovely water body of lake Plansee in Austria. But before getting into Austria, I went in to visit the Linderhof Palace on the way.

    Linderhof Castle

Fabulous Gardens of the Linderhof Castle

I took too much time visiting Linderhof Castle and at Lake Plansee I could not make it all the way till the Neuschwanstein Castle. Shot a photograph from the distance and made my way back to the Garmisch grounds. Another ride was in store in the afternoon, organised by BMW Motorrad.

The Neuschwanstein Castle from a distance

Afternoon was another story... fabulous ride back to Munich through twisties in a group with some of the best motorcycles that BMW has made over time!

Excellent thread Ken da. I'm short of words of appreciation for the detailed narration and pics which have been posted with so much passion.

Such threads are best read just before the weekend or on monday's. Makes the whole weekend or week ahead worth living. Now I imagine what it would be like to actually be a part of the festival. WOW !!!

Someday i would love retire in Germany. There's so much to see and do or just chill out in the serene and calm of the lovely nature and greenery all around.

            Thanks for sharing.

Just ride in to the next Motorrad Days next year. You can test ride ALL their new release motorcycles for free over an hour.

You can try the Husqvarna on the dirt track.

You can eat good Bavarian sausages! Or you can go to town and walk around lovely Garmisch.

I have become heavily inclined towards the GS Adventure, fully loaded.

And Dipankar, just drop by. It has been less than 48 hours that I am back. But you can drop by. Anytime! You know that!

Afternoon had been fixed by the BMW officials taking care of us, the Indians, for a lovely ride through the Alps through some magnificent roads, curving around mountains and stopping for a short while at another lovely lake. The road to Munich which is usually just 90 kms was clearly avoided for pure motorcycling bliss. BMW Motorrad had arranged Mr Ronald to take us for the ride who is a track-and-dirt-trained motorcycling tour guide and trainer. He was an amazing personality with oodles of experience who took us in the discovery of the contours of the mountainous landscape around sparkling lakes.

A short video that was shot in the morning while I made my stop at Lake Plansee in Austria.

I loved the colour of the water at the lake!

With Ronald at the lake during the ride in the afternoon.

We did 150 kms of beautiful motorcycling with Ronald. And during our stop at the lake in the afternoon en route to Munich, I made a quick short video of the lovely gentleman, a true rider.

For once the Rain gods took mercy, till Munich in the evening when it started raining once again. It was ride worth remembering.

We arrived at Munich at 1900 hours. BMW Motorrad checked me in at a lovely hotel. The next day was for the discovery of Munich and the BMW Museum which I will be coming up with soon.
