Say goodbye to oily petrol bunk attendants as Indian Oil Corporation as the country’s largest state owned oil retailer, Indian Oil Corporation, has just thrown open India first self service petrol bunk at Delhi. This concept, which is almost de rigeur in many countries across the world eliminates the need for an attendant to fill fuel into a customer’s car. Instead, the vehicle owner can operate the fuel nozzle at the petrol bunk fill the required amount of fuel into the vehicle by paying cash or swiping a credit or debit card at a terminal placed on the petrol bunk.

Initially, IOC will have a attendant near the self service pump to ensure that the vehicle owner understands how to use this system and handle the fuel nozzle. Once awareness grows, the fuel pump attendants will gradually be removed from the self service outlets. Now, there are two major advantages of this system. One: It could result in the concept of more 24 hour petrol bunks in India which can function even without petrol bunk attendants.
This is one factor that has been crucial missing link for access to fuel at all times. Mostly, fuel dispensing pumps in India operate with a set timing that does not usually cover the sundown hours after say 2200 or 2300 Hrs. Very few petrol bunks operate 24 hours a day thus making life very difficult for vehicle owners who run out fuel at odd hours. Through self service petrol bunks, this issue can be solved easily. The second big issue that will be solved is of cheating at petrol bunks.
Many a times, petrol pump attendants operate in teams of two, a person who dispenses fuel and another who collects money, to distract the customer filling up fuel. By employing distraction tactics, these dishonest attendants fill lesser fuel than billed for, thus blatantly cheating the customer. This menace will also come to an end once the customer is able to fill fuel her/himself through self service petrol bunks without anyone else intervening. So, on the whole, this new initiative by IOC is indeed a laudable one.
