Indian Oil Corporation launches India’s first self service petrol bunk!

Say goodbye to oily petrol bunk attendants as Indian Oil Corporation as the country’s largest state owned oil retailer, Indian Oil Corporation, has just thrown open India first self service petrol bunk at Delhi. This concept, which is almost de rigeur in many countries across the world eliminates the need for an attendant to fill fuel into a customer’s car. Instead, the vehicle owner can operate the fuel nozzle at the petrol bunk fill the required amount of fuel into the vehicle by paying cash or swiping a credit or debit card at a terminal placed on the petrol bunk.

An IndianOil Petrol Bunk used as an illustration

Initially, IOC will have a attendant near the self service pump to ensure that the vehicle owner understands how to use this system and handle the fuel nozzle. Once awareness grows, the fuel pump attendants will gradually be removed from the self service outlets. Now, there are two major advantages of this system. One: It could result in the concept of more 24 hour petrol bunks in India which can function even without petrol bunk attendants.

This is one factor that has been crucial missing link for access to fuel at all times. Mostly, fuel dispensing pumps in India operate with a set timing that does not usually cover the sundown hours after say 2200 or 2300 Hrs. Very few petrol bunks operate 24 hours a day thus making life very difficult for vehicle owners who run out fuel at odd hours. Through self service petrol bunks, this issue can be solved easily. The second big issue that will be solved is of cheating at petrol bunks.

Many a times, petrol pump attendants operate in teams of two, a person who dispenses fuel and another who collects money, to distract the customer filling up fuel. By employing distraction tactics, these dishonest attendants fill lesser fuel than billed for, thus blatantly cheating the customer. This menace will also come to an end once the customer is able to fill fuel her/himself through self service petrol bunks without anyone else intervening. So, on the whole, this new initiative by IOC is indeed a laudable one.

there's a but,it could increase profit of IOC by cutting down on labour costs which could help in lower fuel prices in the future [dont except it soon enough though ] AND it will lead to unemployment as well!

how will be the cash payment method ???

SAY - you have to pay cash on counter & person will give you coupon of that amount & you have to insert in machine ???
If so, then there will be another RATION ka line on bunks.

It usually does not accept cash - only cards (credit or debit).
Some locations that have a convenience store attached, will let you pay at the store instead. However, I haven't seen the option being used much.
That said, I am not sure of how IOC plans to operate its pumps.

Good initiative. And as for the employment, it could also increase employment by using technically educated people for the purpose of handling the R&D, implementation, production of equipment, etc.
It's a new system, and obviously someone will implement it. So, employment persists although only for the technically qualified enough.

+1. It should have happened much earlier itself.

From my experience abroad how it works is that there will be 1 person on the counter... You park your car near a pump and go to the counter tell the attendant there that u want to fill 1000 bucks of fuel at pump number say 4... he will punch it on his comp and u can go back to your ar and fill that amount of fuel... The pump will be unlocked for only 1000 worth of fuel...

It seems to be the same method followed in developed countries; one needs to fill in the fuel pump as desired & then, there's a billing machine that generates & prints out the bill the moment the nozzle is put back to the pump. The fuel pump also accepts card (credit/debit) to make the payment. Its upto the honesty of the customer to make the payment!!!

No it doesnt quite work like that... I hae explained the cash transaction above.. In case of credit cards you first swipe the card and enter the pump number in that machine... you take your card back and go to the pump and fill the required fuel... Once finished you put the nozzle back... And the amount on the machine on putting the nozzle back is what will be charged on your cc/dc...

Really? Give the nozzle into the hands of the morons? I have seen my 'educated' friends light a cigarette right in front of the filling machine while sitting in the car being topped up. So rest assured that the rest of the lot will be intelligent enough.

PS: Now disgruntled in-laws can bring their daughter-in-laws to the fuel station, swipe a card, and you know the rest of the story.

PPS: May sound offensive, but read the news and you will find that people like that exist.

                            Hi,
After getting used to this way abroad I was waiting for this since long. No issue if you want to fill up using Credit/Debit card. But with the cash it works as, you go to the convenience store (all of the gas stations have it), tell the pump number, the attendant will unlock it. Then fill up the fuel. Go back to the store & pay for it. Few of the gas stations do not have credit/debit card swiping facility at the pumps in that case too you have ask the attendant to unlock the pump & after refilling pay it at the convenience store. You can not run away, because CCTV cameras are in place so they have your number plate, face etc.
I guess ICOL will have to put attendant at every pump so that nobody gets away with it. Anyway the credit/debit card swiping machines are located somewhere else so you can go & pay there. Happy customers, Happy IOCL.
                            Regards,
                            Abhijit
