    It could very well be. And if it is so, shame on TVS to have been caught off guard. Bajaj had made it adequately clear that the new pulsar will share the jazz with KTM. And the Duke 125 showed its prowess a LONG while back. So what the Pulsar could get was adequately clear!

    That asides Bajaj has set THE benchmark on how a flagship model should be upgraded. Can TVS do that? I dont know!

      The tvs guys have planned for a hybrid scooter launch later this year i think this will be a good new market with the ever rising fuel prices back to discussion the pulsar has evolved from 13bhp to current 15bhp on the 150cc engine capacity itself tvs all it did was bore extra 10cc on the existing mill and 17 more cc for the A180 i dont think this as much of an upgrade tvs has to think about their strategy ;but still i love the way a A160 cuts through city traffic than the pulsar 150 which is no were near the apache in handling terms .

        A flagship model usually is for building the "halo" around the brand.

        TVS probably faces the dilemma of whether to invest time/resource on a flagship brand or instead do something about the models which bring in the sales numbers (its scooters, its Mopeds and the commuter Star/Sport models).

        (Apart from combined Scooters+Motorcyle numbers) HMSI has also overtaken TVS in motorcycle sales (according to Feb 2012 numbers).

        Yes, but probably nobody expected a liquid cooled engine + a perimeter frame on the new Pulsar.

        Why do you think a perimeter frame makes it appearance on the new Pulsar? Every magazine is going go ga on the handling of the new Pulsar.

        I would like to see TVS put a perimeter or trellis frame on its flagship for its next "major" upgrade.

          One reason TVS is not being able to do that what Bajaj did because they do not have strong technical partnerships, so much experience like Bajaj and a big R&D center what Bajaj has.

          But the main reason why TVS is not being able to carry it on because of huge profit difference. TVS net profit after tax this quarter was 55crores which is not big enough for carrying out vast RnDs. In comparison Bajaj's profit was around 800crores so they can afford to carry out big RnDs. Also Bajaj earns quite well since they have 40% stakes in Duke and 20% in Kawasaki so money is what matters.

            Bajaj does have around 40% stake in KTM but Kawasaki..?? Nah..

            Developing a completely new motorcycle (like the P200NS) would be a huge task and would require focus and investment in time & resource for any R&D.

            The R&D of TVS might be very busy with so many different kind of projects it is working on. For Eg: Scooters (for India), Step Thru's (for Indonesia), technologies like clutchless gear motorcycle, ABS and recently announced automatic transmission (not the usual CVT currently found on scooters) for 2 wheelers.. etc.

            Developing a completely new flagship motorcycle would be a big deal for a stretched R&D. Still am sure that it might be a bit late but TVS will follow Bajaj and will eventually bring out the next Gen Apache RTR.

              The liquid cooled engine was a given, since Bajaj had already told about engine sharing with KTM, what probably caught TVS off guard was may be the power output of 23 horses and off course the perimeter frame. Competition is really good or else TVS would still be selling the 4 geared Fiero with tweaks here and there. Lets put it this way TVS has lost it, they never have a plan B like Bajaj has, I still dont understand why they are still selling flop product like the Flame, they should have stopped selling it long time back [no plan B]. Look at Bajaj XCD, it flopped, they withdrew it and put the same engine in the discover and it is a success, perfect example of responding to market.

                Don't write TVS off. If the response to the new Pulsar 200NS (and future models like the announced 350 cc) is good, then am sure TVS would also follow suit with next generation RTR's.

                But in the process, it could appear that TVS is again following the competition.

                Having said that TVS needs to be commended for trying new tech like clutchless transmission, ABS and the announced hybrid tech and automatic transmission for scooters & bikes.. that too with not too big profits from their 2 wheeler sales.

                          Since Bajaj has already revealed about the 350, I am sure the top management at TVS can plan accordingly, but then with TVS you never know, they might just be content in dishing out 100 cc bikes

                              TVS will never ever forget their racing pedigree, it was "the thing" that resurrected TVS... if they continue dishing out 100ccs then, it'll be only a matter of time before they become extinct, TVS would definitely know that... maybe they want to study the market and the demand for particular motorbikes...

                              or maybe they are waiting for other manufacturers to play out their trump cards early... so that they can strike when the others are least expecting.. we won't know anything for sure right now.. we just have to wait . i'm pretty sure that TVS won't fail us this time round...
                              Every BIKE has a lot of speed in it. The trick is getting the speed out of it.

                                TVS has a history of coming back with a bang,hopefully it'll continue...But as Ive observed,their products have never really been able to better the best,period.
                                Their interest in developing new technologies is worth noting but that alone doesn't say a lot about the company.Its RTR is being meeked by upcoming launches, that their flagship is a hoot to ride is a whole different story thing altogether.
