WHY isn't road & Infrastructure development privatized!?!?
The amount of employment to unskilled labour and developmental speed generated will be phenomenal.
Corrupt road contractors/governing authorities will be history!

Unless that happens the need of private vehicles will never come down leading to growing number of vehicles on-road and our useless politicians making their families wealthier from the tax we pay.
i second this. if u look around you. 70-80% who uses cars has only one passenger or maybe two . why cant these people use public transport? or even motorcycles for that matter.will reduce the traffic congestion and pollution considerably. commuting to work/college in cycle can be another solution (i do that )

thats the lamest excuse i have ever heard. why cant anyone use volvo . im sure one needs to pay just i/3rd of what they pay for fuel and you can have a comfortable hazzle free journey in a/c.

And bike riding for 60 kms won't spoil your clothes at all, is it?? This is one strange excuse man.

@ the Monk and others: Like I said in my first post, the news is so incomplete that it may be twisted either way: Maybe we'll get less charges, OR we'll have to pay more OR maybe it will depend on if we move from state to state.

And judging by the way I know the government, it won't be relaxing charges on the common man that easily. Read the example I gave on protectionism I gave in my first post. It will tell the reality of the government.

It's 6% Minimum across all states. States can have higher tax as they please, so there won't be any changes in high Taxed states like KA,TN. Only the union territories and other states which have a 2% tax are made to pay 6% on Ex-showroom price as minimum. It's pretty much a Tax hike than Tax uniformity.

Well here in Allahabad we r paying 7% of road tax

Well here in my town we pay 7% road tax be it a car or a bike. It is one time tax pay. Well also in other towns which I know there they r paying 8% well also heard that in the near future they might bring it till 10% for the taxes on the total cost of the machine. Dam these naitas just want to put money in there pockets and don't wana do anything for the people. Well we the biker want to pay only 1% of the total tax not more than that. Lol I know that's not possible but worth a try

To all my friends who welcome public transport, here's what I got to say & I hope we stop going OT from here!!!
First, like men_in_jean's latter part of the statement, the public transport has to be IMPROVISED a lot, I really mean a lot, from the present situation. That said, practically speaking about Madras...

                            - Most of the I.T companies & manufacturing are now located out of city; only clerical jobs are within the city
                            - Most people who've been settled within the city are long time dwellers & its close to impossible to afford for a flat within the city unless its a dungeon. So people prefer settling in suburbs
                            - From suburbs, Chennai being one of the best city bus provider in the South, has its own share of issues like...
                            a. The buses are more than overcrowded (take into account of so many women who are also on board & for now forget the eve teasing part)
                            b. The buses are not operated on regular timely basis; either the buses don't come at all or they come in a row of 2-3 of them. So there's almost no reliability
                            - Being peak hour, the buses go slow enabling to reach office untime OR forcing to switch 2 buses since there's lot of distance involved (30 one way atleast)
                            - Even if one leaves early from home to reach office on time, they aren't able to reach back home on time in the evening due to the same above said issues
                            - Keeping aside the I.T people, I'm not sure if all the class of people earn handsomely like I.T guys to afford for bus.

Now, if you guys think I'm saying as if bus is more expensive, here's the math I did last Sunday for a distance of 13 Kms by bus (Limited Stop that stops in almost every stop) for 3 of us worked to Rs 51; to & fro is 102, provided we get a straight bus, otherwise its bound to increase. Even with our damn CBR, we could've done under the price of a litre Petrol. Talking about the car, it works to Rs 130 for this trip. Eventually I realized, the prices have gone up, but the services remains the same or still worse. But hell yes!!! it costs less on a private vehicle than a public transport.

Point - In the present scenario, I see things are going worst than pre independence era in terms of tax, just that we're not killed unnecessarily by the Govt.

PS - Now why is it easy to tax people? Because its easier than...
                            - Associating accountability with every Govt employee
                            - Prying the black money
                            - Arresting the corruption
                            - Last but not the least, collecting the pending taxes from the tax defaulters

i guess it depends on the particular city you are living. its a different story here in bangalore. b.m.t.c are well governed. daily pass costs 40 bucks with which you can travel unlimited time in the city for a day.and its 90 bucks for volvo service i guess. so its really not that expensive. (fuel is more expensive here in b`lore).
