  • Motor Vehicle Act revises violation fines

Finally!!!!! This was one thing which was on my mind for a very long time now seeing the way number of people break basic rules on the road and get away with petty fines of Rs. 100/-

Cabinet OKs tougher penalties under Motor Vehicle Act - The Times of India

Im definitely happy with the resolution passed by the Cabinet to impose tougher penalties for violating road rules.

I just hope the money earned by this is put to proper use especially to pay the traffic police who we all know accept bribes because of the low salaries they earn. Lets see if this improves the traffic situation. I'm sure it will be difficult but its a start.

Very steep fines indeed. But One point pisses me off. High fine for listening to i-pod / mobile! Means no music while riding!!! Ridiculous. I know why it's being implemented. There are some super stupid guys who listens to so loud music that they can't even hear a Train's horns while crossing track.

a welcome move,much-needed for our great indian road dramas.
and the question remains why do i race?
every finishing line is the begining of a new race.

#i have learnt to manipulate my own adrenaline and the perception of biking is different.

Ditto... But in any case, for them, having plugged in Earphones is equal to talking to phone for the babus.

This will definately take away the fun of listning to fav tracks on the road.

Really good. Nonsensical riding will reduce to a great extent if bribing is also reduced to a minimal level.
In my opinion listening to music via earphones fine is justified too as the noise-cancellation ear buds cancel noise in the true sense.

All very well to drastically increase the fines. But who is going to stop the cops from pocketing 100-200bucks to let the rider/driver off the hook? India always has lots of laws. Its the implementation which is pathetic.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

                Good move...
Heavy fines and strict implementation is the sure shot way of making ppl respect law. One of the major reason why we find traffic order in developed nations.

Some ppl think, with this corruption will increase. Do they still don't want to follow rules and get away by paying bribes. Why not obey law and drive with respect and also eliminate corruption. And even if some ppl will get away by paying bribe, they will have to pay higher bribe as bribes are proportionate to fines...

Graded fines for repeat offence is also good moves. Else offenders get adopted to fines very quickly ;-)...

They should also implement point system for each offence and accumulation of certain points will lead to licence confiscation and even cancellation...

i never thought this way,you made me think the way round, yeah it makes even easier for them to hike up the bribe amount.

Forget hiking the bribe; now they'll stay vigilant to enforce law; the bribe remains the same, but more bikers are caught...to spread the awareness that the fine amount has been increased!!! When less & less people start violating law, the amount of bribe goes up.

Can anyone correct me here if im wrong. As far as i have heard, the traffic policemen are paid very less salaries and that is one of the reasons why many of them start taking bribes. If they take the bribes, we are the ones paying them. Follow traffic rules or pay up the fines and hope the government uses the fine amounts to increase the salaries of the traffic policemen so that they do not resort to taking bribes.

All said, its the attitude of the educated people here. I would probably not question someone who is uneducated. But what about the educated lot of people who make their kids learn that we are supposed to stop at the red light and while dropping them to school, disobey the same rule. The attitude here matters the most which has to be changed.

                        Cheers!!!

Like what? If that were the case, do Raja, Kanimozhi, Kalmadi & other low wagers in the same cadre paid less in this nation?
Bottom line - Gone are those days!!! These people earn as much as any central Govt employee...atleast in TN.

You're probably ignorant on what's really going on in the country; to explain simple, tour in UP, you'll get to know more; compare the streets between at Beijing & Delhi, you'll know where we stand.

Sayank - Much of it is best left unsaid; today early morning 4:00 AM, I see two Police on a Splendor jumping signal, while I was waiting. Point - The law makers are the law violators in this country!!!

Agreed. Include auto drivers and bus drivers as well here. But people should not be taking an excuse that since they are let off, we should also have the same treatment. Nothing wrong in following the rules. We are not doing it for someone else. Its for our own good.
