  • Renting bikes in Goa could become tougher for tourists

Source: Renting bikes in Goa could become tougher for tourists

Panaji: The Goa government is examining whether they can have a moratorium on the number of vehicles registered under the rent-a-bike scheme amidst rising number of bikes being rented out to tourists in the state.

State Transport Director Arun Desai told PTI that the state transport authority (STA) meeting would take a view on whether to restrict the number of bikes given under the scheme.

The Goa government had allowed bikes on rent in view of the demand from visitors. Following this, several people purchased bikes which are given on hire for a cost of Rs. 250 - Rs. 1,500 depending on the tourist season.

Traditional tourist taxi operators, who have been severely affected because of these bikes, had demanded a ceiling on the number of such vehicles permitted in the state.

Mr Desai said that there are around 14000-odd bikes under the scheme.

"We need to see whether for a state like Goa, we really need such number of bikes," the director said, adding that the final call on whether to allow more bikes or stop at a certain number would be taken by the STA.

Goa receives more than 26 lakh tourists annually. The bikes taken on rent come in handy for visitors, thus sparing them from paying hefty sums to tourist taxis in the state, which operate without meter.

    So much for corruption...
Since the (corrupt) taxi drivers were incurring losses, the less corrupt bike lender must face the loss.

first the govt should make them operate with meters so that tourists don't get looted. next, the tourists should have a choice regarding the mode of transport they prefer. if meters are made compulsory, some tourists wouldn't mind touring in taxis for reasons such as comfort, family and weather.

Whenever I go to Goa, I always rent a bike. It makes a lot of sense to rent a bike instead of the so called taxis who run without meter and charge outrageously. This is really unfair both for tourists and the people who rent these bikes.

If taxis feel that they are losing business, they should start charging appropriately or install meters. People wont mind hiring taxis if they charge reasonably. so the actual problem is with unorganized fare structure. I remeber bargaining with taxi drivers for couple of occasions. If you dont bargain they will charge you anything.

I think the Government is acting under pressure from Taxi Union. Taxi's should be forced to charge as per meter else the Tourist should have full freedom to use whatever alternative means they can find. Bikes are best means of Transport in Goa is what I feel.

Everything from Activa / Passion to Karizma / P220 used to be available the last time I rented a Bike in Goa. But that was in January 2009. I see no reason why Duke / CBR wouldn't be available now.
