Pondicherry seems to have the same rent-a-bike scheme. Whenever I'm there I hire a bike. I couldn't imagine a more efficient and fun way to explore any city, alone or riding two-up with my wife.

It is stipulated in the bike lender's contract that the bike is to be ridden only within the state limits of Pondicherry, which is a rather small area... I've always wondered why. If you hire a bike in, say, France, you can tour France with it. It's such a shame that you can't hire a bike in India and go wherever you like.

Though I keep hearing of non-indian nationals touring India on REs. I presume they must have bought them? But then if you buy your own motorcycle can you get an insurance as a foreign resident? I don't think you could in Europe. I guess there must be a loophole somewhere that allows foreigners to buy, insure and use bikes all over India.
Learn from the mistakes of others. You won't live long enough to make all of them yourself.
