  • Helmet compulsory to get vehicle registered in Kochi RTO

The RTO of Kochi will make it compulsory from February to have a helmet to register a two-wheeler.

Dealers are supposed to provide a helmet with every two-wheeler they sell. To enforce this rule the RTO has made it compulsory for a Helmet to be brought to get the vehicle registered.

The RTO hopes that this will get more and more people to wear helmets.

    B J Antony, Ernakulam RTO -

"According to Central Motor Vehicles Rules, helmet is part of the vehicle and so a dealer should give it to the customer for free. We will register a motorcycle only if the owner brings his helmet. We have contacted most dealers in Kochi and they have responded in a positive manner,"
The plan is to implement this across the state, but it gets more difficult in the interiors as most motorcyclists don't bother wearing a helmet. Because of continuous enforcement of the Helmet rule, the no. of deaths on road accident has reduced.

But will making a helmet compulsory at the time of registration, be enough of a reason to get people to use those very same helmets and not hang it off their hands. In some countries fuel is not sold to a two-wheeler who are not wearing a helmet.

After registration they will simply throw away the helmets.
      Got a $5 head? Get a $5 helmet.

well, it is a good idea to make helmet compulsory at the time of registration but selling it with bike and making it mandatory is not that good, i use a 2500 rupees helmet and still i will be forced to purchase a 500 rupees helmet from dealer ... not good.

Sad but true. This is the side-effect of this move - those who are truly passionate about riding and aware of its pitfalls and buy good helmets get screwed.

This rule may or may not help but:
Kochi seems much better in wearing helmet, using turn indicators etc compared to many other cities in India.
In some cities, First we need to conduct a helmet awareness campaign for police, so that they wears one!

That was exactly what I was goingto point out as well. The government needs to come up with much more solid plans
And what if they borrow a helmet from a friend, register the bike and return it back, this makes no sense

In Kochi, I see everyone wearing an helmet for the the fear of fine imposed on violators but you just cross Alappuzha and upto Trivandrum, You can find naked empty heads riding bikes.
